Panzer Dragoon is 20 years old today

I had originally skipped PD1 because I was all anti-Saturn at the time (even though I was a huge SMS/Genesis fan), and just thought it looked like crap.

When development for the Saturn picked up and PDZ came out, I took notice. That's around the time I got a Saturn and PDZ was one of the first games I played. I absolutely loved it even though all the reviews were criticizing the soundtrack, which I thought was organic, ethnic, and wholly original.

When PDS came out, I bought it without question. It was the first RPG I ever 100%'d, and it remains one of my all-time favorite games. It wouldn't be until afterwards that I would go back and play PD1, and although it's choppy and looks old, old, old, it's still completely playable and fun, and man, that soundtrack is something special.

Great series, but for some reason that is beyond me, I didn't really get into PDO, and I skipped PDM, which I really want to try since I love Space Harrier!

Love this franchise. The original was impressive enough, but Zwei was a significant improvement and one of my most replayed games on Saturn. I broke Saga after grinding to some ridiculous level on the demo and then using the data for the full release.

Orta's my favourite of the bunch. In 23 years of gaming I have never been so gobsmacked by a game's visuals / presentation as when I first fired stage 1 up, and probably never will be again. The additional mechanics give it the best gameplay of the series in my opinion. Just thinking about it makes me want to replay it, which I'll do after leaving my 360 on for 20 hours to fully unlock Pandora's Box and dodge the PAL freezing glitch.

imo
1. Orta
2. Zwei
3. Saga
4. PD
+1

Saga is probably my #2 or #3 game of all time. It's a damn shame that Sega did such a poor job of preserving this series. More people should play them, and HD remakes would be glorious in the right hands.

What?!? Did all these reviewers lose their ability to hear properly when reviewing, the soundtracks incredible.

Reporting for duty.

Me, too.

Apparently, Gametap had a emulator that was running Saga. Forgot why they never released it.
Because Gametap never had an emulator that was running Saga. They were too busy scrambling (and ultimately not succeeding) to get NiGHTS running on the emulator, after the higher-ups announced it was going to be supported without informing the people who actually put the emulator on the service.

At least said emulator had Panzer Dragoon and Zwei running...

Still the only game in the franchise (well, aside from PD Mini on Game Gear) I haven't played/beaten. Hope to do that one day, since this isn't too expensive compared to some of the other popular US Saturn titles.

Which beats not being able to play any of them because of never owing the correct consoles in their day, like in my case. It feels like I should be here celebrating Panzer Dragoon alongside you guys, but I can't fully because of how this series has evaded me to this day. The fact that all of them are now collector's items and that they never can be emulated officially by Sega doesn't help either.

As for Orta: I'm also still bummed out Sega decided to develop it exclusively for the one console I didn't have at the time. Sure, I could have bought a Xbox - or Saturn for that matter - but I never had enough money to spare to justify such a purchase for one or two games. Still, I do hold a soft spot for Panzer Dragoon, if only for its incredible music and other people's adoration for it.

Speaking of the music, Orta and Saga composer Saori Kobayashi has been working with Brave Wave to compose new songs and even an upcoming solo album, which might be worth keeping an eye out for.

By the way: how do people here feel about Crimson Dragon (also composed by Kobayashi) now that the dust has settled a bit? Is it really that terrible?

I remember my dad buying me a Saturn with Virtua Fighter, Daytona USA and Panzer Dragoon.
I lost my shit with PD's graphics and my dad lost his to the first stage theme. His mind was blow to hear real classical music in a game.

I still think that moment in Zwei when your little runt dragon jumps off the cliff and you are like YES YES YES FLIGHT FLIGHT FLIGHT and then little runt dragon slowly falls to the ground is the best moment in the series. I can't believe how much I had bonded with the thing. When you finally take off, it's like IEHTISHTISOERHTY EYAHHHHH /howard dean

I wish somebody just reiterated on Saga's mechanics, the game is so much fun. I'm just picturing all the aerial boss fights and ancient structures with modern visuals, it can be really special. Even Orta still looks nice, such good art direction.

I never actually played this game (or any other Panzer Dragoon game), despite loving JRPGs and shooters since I was a kid. Can any Saturn emulators upres games, or do they need to be played at native res?

Looking at all the upscaled PS2 and GC pics in the emulation threads makes me wish Xbox emulation was a thing by now. I want to upscale Orta in the same way as it was the best looking game of that entire generation for me.

Yabause allows upresing in OpenGL mode but it isn't as reliable or as fast an emulator as SSF. Here's me playing a level in Yabause OpenGL mode as you can see the backgrounds are going to be very pixelated no matter what and Yabause hasn't got the sound right yet. Last I checked anyway.

A Panzer Dragoon thread? GAF is the best!

Congratulations you beautiful, whimsical series! You'll forever be alive in our hearts and minds.

I only started playing these games last year when I finally got me a saturn. I keep getting sidetracked and I haven't beaten the first one yet and I'm holding off playing too much of Zwei until I finish the first.

I should probably stop doing that with games.

I didn't think it was that bad and had a bit of fun playing through it. I hope they try again with another one and let you rotate the camera with the shoulder buttons instead of barrel rolling.

I bought Panzer Dragoon even before I bought my Saturn. And Zwei was such an amazing sequel... a massive improvement in every way. Sadly, never played RPG or Orta.
