Let's be excited.

STOCKHOLM - Oct. 29, 2015 - Paradox Interactive, a global games developer and publisher, today announced the acquisition of White Wolf Publishing from CCP Games in an all-cash deal. Now a subsidiary of Paradox Interactive, White Wolf Publishing is a licensing business that owns and manages intellectual properties including World of Darkness, Vampire: The Masquerade and Werewolf: The Apocalypse. Led by CEO Tobias Sjögren, former EVP of Business Development at Paradox, White Wolf Publishing will operate as an independent entity with a dedicated team.

White Wolf Publishing has a long history of producing gaming universes that span mediums, including tabletop and collectible card games, PC games and books. Paradox Interactive acquired all of White Wolf’s brands, and its new subsidiary will pursue development opportunities across relevant categories of games under the White Wolf Publishing name.

“Like Paradox’s games, White Wolf’s properties have dedicated, passionate communities. While there are similarities in spirit, White Wolf’s IPs have very different themes than Paradox’s titles, and deserve their own brand and team,” said Fredrik Wester, CEO and President of Paradox Interactive. “We have great respect for White Wolf’s gaming worlds and see big opportunities for their expansion in the future under our new subsidiary.”

“Over the last 20 years, I’ve had the opportunity to work with beloved studios like DICE and Paradox on the business management side of games, and as a developer earlier in my career. I look forward to bringing my experience to bear as we pursue new ways to interact with White Wolf’s universes,” said Tobias Sjögren, CEO of White Wolf Publishing. “The White Wolf IPs are well suited for all kinds of media and we see great potential to expand them in the future.”

"At CCP, we have great admiration for the White Wolf brands and communities, and it was extremely important to us that the acquiring company share the same respect and understanding,” said Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, CEO of CCP Games. “With Paradox, we know we are leaving the brands in good hands."

hmmmmm indeed.

Just make it happen. It's obviously the right thing to do.

RPS: White Wolf Interview: “There Have Not Been Enough Video Games Set In The World Of Darkness”

Few interesting details about the acquisition although they can't really talk specifics regarding future plans and development.
RPS: As I understand it, White Wolf is a ‘daughter company’ to Paradox rather than a fully incorporated part of your Paradox holdings. Does that mean you will be free to work with other publishers with your guidance?

Sjögren: Yes! The logics behind that is simple. Like most publishers out there Paradox is specialised and does certain types of games better than anyone else.

But if there is a publisher that is a better fit than Paradox for a product that White Wolf would like to license, we are definitely set to do the deal with that publisher. White Wolf is here to do what is best for Exalted and World of Darkness and the fans who love these properties.

What does this mean?

Given Paradox's output, it will probably mean that games actually get made using White Wolf IPs, like Vampire. This is a very good thing - as small to mid-size company, Paradox actually has a vested interest in making games, not really in hoarding licenses.

What? Why?

At least CCP let White Wolf do their own thing in the tabletop space. Paradox will milk the videogame space.

Paradox Interactive Acquires White Wolf Publishing from CCP Games
New Paradox Subsidiary will Operate Independently and Manage All White Wolf Properties, Including World of Darkness and Vampire: The Masquerade

They will make a full press release later. For now, just let's be excited.

For everyone who don't know what this means, here some names:
- World of Darkness
- Vampire the Masquerade
- Exalted
- Scion

When I saw the topic I thought for sure it was some White Wolf I had never heard of, but I guess not. Hopefully it goes well for them.

Now... where did I put those glasses...

When I can't find them they are almost always
on my face already.

Awesome. CCP wasn#t doing jack shit with these properties at this point.

Now, Paradox please get Obsidian on the phone. I am sure they can pitch you a couple of RPGs.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
Would adore seeing a spiritual successor to Bloodlines from Obsidian or equally competent role playing developer. The Troika dream is dead but I'll hold onto fragments wherever I can.

Interesting.

Paradox's internal teams don't really seem like a good fit for this license, their last attempt at an RPG crashed and burned.

Hopefully they farm it out to someone talented.

Obsidian.

That's really awesome. I remember CCP was working on a WoD mmo at some point, but I never knew they owned White Wolf. Paradox seems like a great home for it, totally agreed with everyone else that I'd love for them to partner with Obsidian for a spiritual successor to Bloodlines.

Now that's an exciting prospect.

Obsidian must team up with Doublebear.

Paradox, doooooo. Iiiiiiiiit.

So, It's Haloween(ish), and White Wolf is now owned by a Video game publisher who might actually do soemthing with the license.. sooooo...

Time to Reinstall Bloodlines?

Oh man, I need to see the return of a proper Vampire RPG, Bloodlines was incredible even in it's busted and broken state.

If we could get a spiritual successor that does the things Troika wanted that game to do, all of my money.

Screw all this RPG noise
not really, hook that Obsidian shit to my veins.

What I really want out of this is a CK2 style grand strategy set in the WoD. A truly global exploration of the factionalism and intrigue leading up to Gehenna, something more localised dealing with the Tribes, it's perfect for this kind of setting.

I just hope, if it happens, that it will be again in first plus third person perspective. Engine something nice like Source 2 or Unreal 4. I don't want 2D thing like pillars or 3d isometric like Divinity.
Of course that will require decent budget, not sure if paradox can swing it.

This is some of the best sort of news, the kind of thing that people have always hoped for with any number of dormant properties despite being resigned to them only winding up the stuff of dreams and not the waking world.

Combine this with the ascendant rise of independent outfits running their race and Kickstarter in the mix? All the pieces and then some are there for great things ahead.
