Paragon Open Beta Thead | PC x PS4

I had the best worst match eve yesterday, three people in the jungle yes three me and mate barely kept it together and bit by bit pushed the left lane ending in two of use pushing and taking the core while three others spent the entire game running around the jungle popping out in a lane now and then. People need to get used to this map you can't just lane change on the fly as quickly as before.

Tried briefly the new map yesterday, gameplay improved VASTLY, it's definitely like playing a new iteration in the same series. The only problem I have so far with it is that the visuals/style really took a big hit. From looking like an AAA MOBA to a mid-tier thing. Wtf happened? the map is definitely rushed out. Is there a chance it'll improve graphically with time?

Well yeah

Remember Legacy, it took over a year to get it to the state it was in
All those details were added over time

Same will happen with Monolith
This is almost an Alpha map within a Beta trying to catch up to map which was flowing with the Beta client

Before they were going try out Monolith on the weekends, while Legacy during the week
They just flipped it and went full Monolith, due to Travel Mode annoyance, so the new map will be a work in progress visually and mechanically

the new map is still in alpha mode graphically, an Epic employee who posts here confirmed it

I'm liking the new meta, you get punished if you get distracted , we were pushing two lanes in a game, and the opponent just railroaded an empty to lane to victory because no one bothered to switch :(

Yeah, last I played in Legacy jungle mobs were still grey boxes with "Alpha Content" written above their heads. lol

Downloading paraon today. This will be the first time playing once I come home from work. Any tips I can get? Do people main characters for the most part?

Tier 4 skin??

Speculation is a tier 2 or 3. We don't know if it has any effect/sound changes which would be on a 3+ tier skin. Model changes don't seem to be drastic enough to be a tier 4. Remember, obsidian rampage is a tier 2 skin and that looks pretty different from the base model. This doesn't even seem to be that much of a departure from the base twinblast model. We'll see for sure when patch notes hit.

Wait did I miss something? There is elo in Paragon? Wtf, how can I see my elo?

Yes, technically there is elo. I know of 3 different sites that track it (paragon.gg, agora.gg and fury.gg). But they all have different standards and rankings. There is an internal system that the game uses for matchmaking, but it's not currently surfaced anywhere that I know of. This will probably be shown in the game when they officially roll out ranked/unranked separated playlists.

Patch notes have dropped for tomorrow.

Notes

Iggy, Kwang, and Riktor buffs. Howie and Sev nerfs. Many more as well, but those just stood out.

Twinblast skin will be given for free if you play 10 matches before Dec 31. No mention on whether it will be for sale eventually if you miss it, or what tier it's considered.

Card crafting is included in the patch. Break down old cards for components, combine components and rep to create new cards.

Loot boxes are included as well. You can earn boxes and keys with tribues and master tributes, or can buy them with coins. I'm guessing I'm going to be sitting on a lot of loot boxes before very long. Maybe twitch rewards will branch out to include keys / boxes. I really don't like the random loot box approach to things, part of my reasoning for not wanting to touch Overwatch. I'm totally fine spending money on buying cool skins, emotes, etc....but I'm not going to drop money to have a chance at something. Hopefully it'll be easy to ignore.

Played my first few games of this, feeling overwhelmed with all the cards and the ai games threw me in with auto buying enabled as I learned later that you can do manual mode after a few games.

Didn't expect it to be so MOBA until after a few games. You really have to stay in your lane it seems, try not to get hit or get hits in but importantly you don't want to have to keep tping back to base as you lose xp gains and fall behind.

First moba ever

I'm so lost with this game at the moment

Whatever you do don't even think about PvP for now. Stick to solo or co-op. There's a ton to learn if you've never played a MOBA before. Paragon was my first one too.

This video is using the old map but it explains some of the very basics that you won't be aware of if you haven't played a MOBA before:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCt8A39xgss

It takes some investment to learn but it's worth it in the end, IMO. Probably my favorite team-based multiplayer genre now that I understand it.

Once you learn Paragon you'll be able to watch Dota 2 or League of Legends matches and generally be able to follow what's happening too.

Yeah, it's a MOBA-ass MOBA. Which means it's basically a race to see which team can power up their characters faster. Knowing when and when not to back is an important part of it. Also how to freeze lanes, etc.

Rebuilding my decks and the card system needs some serious purging and or simplification.

Chrono is the same as spark (mana reg) (I get that you can only use them in certain cards, but that adds a tiny bit of deck strategy, but a hell lot of confusion and even more annoyance), some items are the same or have wrong tooltips (Chrono Mancer and Chronospike), 50% of the items are just tiny different to others, etc.pp.
If I would be a beginner I would be totally lost. We don't need 20 times the same item with every combination of 3 stats possible. If you want to make Paragon more like other Mobas, go for their quality over quantity item approach Epic.

I wish I could get into Dota, or LOL. The best I can do is Heroes of the Storm. Paragon is easy to play with it's 3rd person, heroes with it's locked screen that follows the hero, and no item store.

I should try Dota 2 again and try to understand the store system. They have some cool looking heroes.

I'm not sure why but I can't get into the top down point click MOBAs. The 3rd person action feel Paragon and Smite go for is more my style.

We know. :) One thing at a time. (Welcome to a game in actual beta!:D)

Notes for tomorrow's changes. Two very large overhauls in back to back weeks.
Shadow Ops Twinblast
If you are a fan of the new reworked Twinblast, you now have the opportunity to earn the new skin just by playing! Players completing 10 PvP or Co-op matches between Dec. 13 and Dec. 31 will earn Shadow Ops Twinblast. (This also applies to Solo matches up to account level 5.)
And.
[–]arctyczynEpic Games - Community Manager[] 137 points 5 hours ago*

And even if you purchase it (because you couldn't wait), you'll get a refund of your coins after you've completed 10 games.

Edit: By Jan. 1st!
So you can buy the skin and use it early and still get it for free. Not bad.
Hey Mindlog, told ya' with card crafting, all my 1.45million rep that I hoarded will be in use now!
I think I'm just missing 4 Fury cards and 3 Universal cards :]

My crafting goals.
1. 2 Madstone Gems
2. 2 Minor Guards
3. 3 Minor Barriers
First moba ever

This was the first MOBA for me as well. Actually gave me a good appreciation for the genre and I'll occasionally watch streams of DOTA/LoL and the like now. There's a lot to learn and even after you get the hang of that there is more.

#1 thing for me was Last Hits. Without last hitting you fall behind quickly.

Exactly.

Those Kwang buffs...

So good. :)

Really need to get into PvP. Been playing Bots too long.

I've played my fair share of LOL and DOTA 2, and I STILL don't feel ready for PvP in Paragon. Haven't lost a match yet, but still want to stick to it and learn it better.

Same just minus DOTA 2. I've played League for years and yet while I did do Paragon PvP in the early days... Now I I'm always hesistant. I guess because I feel like with League I know the meta, and so I know what to pick but with Paragon I just don't know and so I just pick Bots so I don't have to deal with that.

(Although all of my bot matches have been Kwang - Jungle and Belica - Mid.)

I've finally remembered my GAF password so I can post at work YES!

So....

Only played a couple of co-op matches on the new map so far but I have to say; it's pretty good.

The increased speed means that there's much less room for error, which I like, and it also means you can punish people for overstepping in lanes rapidly - which is what I like about DOTA.

Speaking of DOTA - the new laning set up is also very good. I'm not quite sure who to play in what lane yet (with the exception of the obvious carries) so I played Howitzer in the off lane - good range, decent damage and has an (unreliable) escape so I did pretty well.

Interested to play a little more - feel like they could have let the Monolith update bed in a little before going ham with loot crates and crafting but I'm impressed with the new direction.

If the Monolith blog post comments section is anything to go by, Paragon is officially dead! The number of gnashing teeth posts talking about how Monolith ruined the game is staggering.

I personally found the game unbearably slow pre-Monolith, and it's now a pretty good speed.

yup, the game only slows down if the teams are evenly matched and are able to counter every move, but if a team knows how to punish an empty lane, it's over quickly

excited about the card crafting and loot boxes lol

Go back a few months, the same forums hated Legacy and travel mode.

I post there almost daily, is nothing more than a breeding ground for trolls and whiners.

40 second queue times (gold) doesn't read like a dying game tbh.

Card crafting is live!

So far I'm just dismantling duplicate "unique" equipment and any normal equipment that I have more than 6 copies of.

Any other best practices? I want to ensure I have the potential to create any possible deck.

Note to Epic: we need a "mass dismantle" option for duplicates that could never be used in a single 40-card deck, a la Hearthstone.

Remember, depending on how you are building a deck, there are reasons to keep multiple copies of unique cards. While you wouldn't want to use multiple at the same time, keeping a lower total cost version and one to replace it for the end game is a common strategy.

Also, to anyone that may have bought too many card packs... Remember that you still need to break down cards in order to craft others. The rep requirements seem very small in comparison to how many cards need to be broken down first.

Right, but you can only have 40 cards in a deck. There are some cards that are just straight up extra. I'd say no one ever needs more than 2 of any unique equipment card.

The point was just that there aren't any hard rules preventing those cards from being used. Hearthstone has rules that actually make those cards impossible to slot in a deck, and that isn't the case in Paragon. I'm all for usability and QoL fixes, but not everyone builds decks the same way.

After a certain point there are definitely hard rules because you can only have 40 cards in a deck. So even if you packed a deck with multiple copies of the same equipment card and maxed it out with 1-cost upgrades that you then replaced with a new copy of the same equipment, there's only so many copies that a single deck can hold.

Messed around with crafting a bit. I don't have very many Universal cards :o
I could be drowning in some of the other materials if I wanted.
3 Minor Barriers, 3 Minor Guards and 3 Madstone Gems are mine.

Also, the crates are very generous. My first opened a Dekker mastery and the second a Sparrow mastery. I really wanted both of those more than skins or XP boosts.

Bought my first loot crate in a game ever. I must stop.

Saw a guy on a stream get the gold Grux, 2,000 coins back, and some normal skins. Crazy.

Ooh man I hope people don't get too into loot crates in this game. I guess it'll be a good income provider for Epic. I've never purchased any in Overwatch easily so will be able to ignore them here too.

Is it possible to get loot crates randomly from playing or is this one gonna be the only time?

Is it possible to get loot crates randomly from playing or is this one gonna be the only time?

That is how I understood it. There is a small chance to get a crate or a key at the end of a match. I think the addition of the crates is quite nice. A chance for people that don't want to spend a lot of money to get a random reward, and a nice "gamble" option for people that want to. As long as these are just visuals I'm okay with it.

How much did you guys spend yet? For what? (No competiton btw! Don't end up like that 1 Million Dollar Game of War Guy :)

I don't really care for the skins available but looking forward to more stuff for Narbash, Gadget, Belica etc. Only bought Narbash skin and one loot crate (Crunch skin) but have spend 30€ because I had a ton of fun over the last couple months. Planning on purchasing 10€ every 2 months or so for support.

I've bought the Ruby Grux and Stone looking Rampage skin. They were the ones that stood out to me the most when released. I can't wait for more and more though. In my opinion Epic makes some really great skins. Will be great when every hero has a lot more choices.

The Undertow Gideon is the next one I may buy eventually.

I had already bought the $99 pack that includes all the master challenges (back when they offered that) so there's not much motivation for me to buy loot crate. Pretty much just for skins. I'll get 'em when I get 'em.

Broke down most duplicates that were more than 3 of that card

Got 1 Loot Box and 3 keys waiting for me...
I'm guessing 1 Box and 1 Key is just a taste, wondering what got me the other 2 keys

Only have Murdock as Master

Well I chased after the TwinBlast skin

Got it quickly, his kit is so much fun now
In the process earned 3 more Loot Boxes, guessing, keys is gonna be the downfall lol

I'm wondering what those Tier Chests are...
If Loot Boxes give you Loot I'm the way of Game items, guessing chests are materials for Card Crafting?
Better Chest Tier, more amount earned maybe?
