Wasn't Spielberg late in the DVD format as well? Maybe he doesn't care that much about High Definition for home entertainment...

Great business move by Paramount....they get big money from MS and have leverage next time they go into contract talk with Sony for blu ray.

Plus we'll be able to d/l them on live. woo hoo

The "war" won't be over unless the PS3 goes away. And with future price drops and greater game library in addition to a growing BR library (including support from Sony's own slice of the movie production and distribution market) making that system more attractive, that won't happen. So we're looking at a format war until HD-DVD goes bye bye.

Nah it would be over. The existence of the PS3 or any other alternative format doesn't keep the war going if all the studios won't produce content for it. BRD would become the new UMD and people would go on with VC-1 and get bent over with content leasing for the forseeable future since that is the marketplan of the Microsoft Media group.

Do you not want 360 games now that it's being outsold by the Wii?

Of course not, but I know for a fact Wii is going to win. DVD is going to last until digital distribution is feasible. (Obviously, 360 can sustain itself through software sales, which it has proven over its entire lifespan to be comparable to the [soon-to-be] market leader, Wii. Neither Blu-Ray or HD-DVD have even come close to volume sales of the format that is beating the shit out of them). Welcome To Laserdisc Country, officially inaugurated (sp?) today.

Not only that, but as much as this move is mystifying to so many, clearly Studios know both formats are fucked regardless and plan to use the dipshitted format wars to milk as much money as possible from niche consumers all the while garnering more and more profits from digital distribution (iTVS, XBLVM, HDOnDemand, et al).

It's both of these chulckleheaded format holders fault anyway. They both could have ended this before it began. Now they reap the whilrwind. Gamers win anyway, as most will have a 360 and a PS3 and so the overhead for them jump in to both formats on top of what they'll be spending anyway to game is $150.

Glad im format neutral,I need me some Transformers in HD

Seriously though, we're talking about 33 currently released titles by Paramount and DreamWorks, on a total of 294 titles released for Blu-ray. Aren't we overacting?

damn it every day we got closer to destroying this inferior technology, and then it comes back.

I think this will truly be the final straw that makes both sides ultimately losers forever, and a new format will take the crown as these two formats fail to make any significant foothold vs. DVD in the coming years.

My thoughts as well. I'm am with Blu Ray for the most part, but i'm tired of all these ridiculous shenanigans. Like you said, they're only hurting themselves by playing this flip flopping bullshit. I doubt MS has any real interest in the HD optical market for no other purpose than to put a little sand in Sony's eye. I honestly don't care who wins anymore. I just want my goddamn HD movies. This shit needs to STOP!

29 Titles To Debut Packed With Soon-to-Be-Announced BD Industry 'Firsts' - PLUS
- Fox's First TV Title 'PRISON BREAK' FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER
And LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD and Other Titles To Debut Day-and-Date on BD/DVD --
Blu-ray Out-Performing HD DVD 2-to-1 At Retail in 2007 --

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment (TCFHE) today unveiled an
aggressive global Blu-ray Disc release strategy including 29 new release and
"must-have" catalog titles that runs through the end of the 2007 calendar year.
Among the many highlights of the impressive worldwide slate are six day & date
BD/DVD new theatrical releases from Fox including the $241 million box-office
family favorite FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER and the $335 million
box-office action powerhouse LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD, four day & date BD/DVD (U.S.
only) new theatrical releases from MGM, 19 'must-have on BD' films from the two
studios' libraries, Fox's first-ever TV release on BD - PRISON BREAK -- and
Fox's intention to release at least one state-of-the-art title per month
featuring numerous BD 'firsts.'

The only high-definition packaged media universally supported by the film,
music, gaming and computer industries, BD is the #1 selling high-definition
packaged media. In fact, on a worldwide basis, BD is averaging nearly 70%
market-share per week of all high definition titles sold this year and, in the
U.S., it is out-performing HD DVD by a margin of 115%.

"Given that Blu-ray has consistently outsold HD DVD all year, and this is
the case for any titles released by any studio in both formats, we believe that
the time is right for us to accelerate our activities and help convert the
nearly 60 million high definition households worldwide into Blu-ray households,"
noted Mike Dunn, President Worldwide, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.
"By the end of this calendar year there will be expansive availability of
technically vibrant releases featuring never-before-seen, advanced BD-J
interactivity as well as a broad offering of playback devices at attractive
prices that will prove to any doubting consumers once and for all that Blu-ray
is the only way."

"And as Blu-ray continues to grows stronger, it has become survival of the
fittest which is most apparent in the retail landscape where our eager and
growing global Blu-ray consumer base has caused a shift that is forcing the
allocation of more space to the format that is selling the best. And, in many
recent instances of note, top retailers in North America are choosing to promote
the Blu-ray format exclusively in their stores," continued Dunn.
Among the BD industry 'firsts' from the Studios' upcoming global release
slate are picture in picture capability, enhanced viewing and surround sound
modes with the ability to mix and match picture and sound, direct access to
in-movie features through one of the four colored buttons on the BD remote and
the most technically vibrant BD-Java interactive multi-player challenge and
trivia games to date. The Studios' slate also takes full advantage of BD-Live
functionality this fourth quarter. Internet-connected consumers will enjoy
unique, title specific "web-enabled" interactive features and games and
"web-exclusive" downloadable content with the ability to connect and interact
with other broadband BD users worldwide.

Cementing its leadership position within the industry - previous BD
releases NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM and X-MEN THE LAST STAND rank in the Top 20
best-sellers - the vast majority of the Studios' upcoming global slate will be
presented on 50 GB dual-layer discs with advanced BD-J interactivity and feature
numerous Blu-ray exclusive high-definition bonus materials that further realizes
BD's incredible potential. Consumers will enjoy the superior video and audio
elements of AVC encoding and Lossless HD audio on many of the coming titles as
well as enhanced and integrated menus, personal scene selections, search
indexing, trivia and other title specific games and high-definition bonus
materials.

Upcoming BD-J features exclusive to priority catalogue titles from Fox and
MGM include an "Alien Scavenger Hunt" (INDEPENDENCE DAY) that challenges players
to earn points by identifying the correct number of aliens in select scenes to
unlock additional bonus features; a "Global Warming Trivia Track" (THE DAY AFTER
TOMORROW) where users must correctly answer questions about global warming to
keep the Earth's temperature from rising and being destroyed; and a historical
and geographical pop-up map (MASTER & COMMANDER) that tracks the location of
Captain "Lucky" Jack Aubrey and his enemies.
Listed below are the upcoming Blu-ray Disc releases from Fox and MGM
excluding new theatrical day & date BD/DVD releases. EXACT TITLE CONFIGURATIONS

Blu-ray Disc is a next generation optical disc format developed for
high-definition video and high-capacity software applications. A single-layer
Blu-ray Disc holds up to 25 gigabytes of data and a dual-layer Blu-ray Disc
holds up to 50 gigabytes of data. This greater storage capacity enables the
Blu-ray Disc to store over six times the amount of content than is possible with
current DVDs, and is particularly well-suited for high definition feature films
with extended levels of additional bonus and interactive material. Blu-ray also
features the most advanced copy protection, player backward compatibility with
the current DVD format, connectivity and advanced interactivity.
Fox takes advantage of the next generation format's high definition
technology and advanced functionality to present its titles with the highest
quality audiovisual elements. Showcasing picture quality with six times the
resolution of DVD and theater quality "uncompressed" audio for the purest
digital sound, the cutting-edge discs also feature enhanced and integrated
menus, games, high-definition bonus materials and Java-encoding for more dynamic
and sophisticated interactivity.
The Studio's commitment to emerging technologies is dedicated to enhancing
the consumer experience of its products and providing for backward compatibility
with their existing home entertainment libraries while also aggressively
protecting its intellectual property from piracy. The Blu-ray companies fully
embrace the Studio's steadfast commitment to the fight against piracy and the
preservation of the integrity of its properties. Twentieth Century Fox is a

Why does everyone think Microsoft is propping up HD-DVD? I really didn't think they cared all too much, otherwise HD-DVD would be standard in all 360's. I mean they even said they'd make a Blu-ray addon if it won.

No. No one is reacting as though BD is going to lose the format war.

But we do see this format war that no one except Microsoft wanted dragging on. By the time it ends, if it doesn't keep getting continual infusions of cash from desperate/cunning companies, fledgling interest in HD formats may have already ended.

Fuck their manufacturing costs. This is bad for consumers. Let HD-DVD die FFS.

Bad for consumers in the Blu-Ray camp. Good for consumers in the HD DVD camp and those who haven't joined. Convincing grandma to buy an "HD DVD" would be a lot easier than convincing her to buy some newfangled contraption called Blu-Ray.

Because, they're the only company with the resources and with the interest to do this. Stagnant HD war = Chance for them to enter HD market via downloads.

Inferior? Maybe in the storage size...everything else is better on hd dvd....the blu ray camp hasnt even released the final spec machines to the public yet. The software running each format is way better on the hd dvd side.

And anyone worried about this creating another umd o of blu ray needs to get a grip...ps3 isnt going anywhere. What this may do however is add to the universal disc that plays on both formats. Thus changing the amount of money sony gets from each disc? I just think the studios not owned by sony are telling sony they want better pc of the pie.

Spiderman 3 vs. Transformers... FIGHT!

As far as quality, spiderman 3 was shit, and word of mouth was terrible.

Transformers was the opposite.

I'm just talking about quality here...

This is by far the biggest load of shit I've seen spewed by any HD-DVD-tard.

The theory (which I don't subscribe to) is that Microsoft doesn't want HD DVD to win. They want a stalemate. Therefore, keeping HD DVD alive is all they need to do. Inlcuding HD DVD in the 360 would put it on the path to victory. The idea is that a stalemate in the format war will further their success in the VOD market and hurts the PS3.

What the hell does the software running BD or HD-DVD have to do with me?

Only thing I give a toss about as consumer is; features, video and audio resolution and movie support.

Admittedly, HD-DVD have been consistently good with the first three; but come BD 1.1 (in october) BD becomes better in all respects; the only thing its lacking now (yes, even after Paramount exclusivity announcement) is features wise, which will be rectified with 1.1.

Yes, it did...where she was clothed and buried under 2.5 hours of some of the most boring, drawn out cinema I've seen in a good while. You know how many Google Searches you could perform in 2.5 hours?

I definitely agree with this thought, the studios obviously don't care about HD discs at this point, and won't going forward. They don't want us owning the movies to begin with, they want us paying as frequently as possible. I don't like it, but it's where the studios seem to be going. Personally I would like one HD media format, because that's the model that best fits my wants/needs.

I still don't see why DVD sales are constantly brought up. The HD formats have been around for ~18 months, no rational person should be expecting huge inroads in such a short time.

ding ding ding......exactly....dont see why this is such a bad thing either. Sony will be allowing hd rentals via psn soon enough too.

No it isn't.

Transformers rocked. I would like to know in what world you could watch Transformers and then think to yourself "Well what a shitty movie, i want my 10$ back".

You have to be some boring elitist. Or some old fuck.

Universal, Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks Pictures, Nickelodeon Movies and MTV Films available in HD DVD exclusively. Am I missing any?

So basically, excluding Spielberg titles in the Dreamworks SKG library, we have the following studio breakdown:

Blu-ray
Columbia
Disney
Fox
MGM
Lion's Gate
Warner
New Line
Weinstein

HD DVD
Universal
Paramount
Dreamworks (live-action)
Dreamworks Animation
Warner
New Line
Weinstein

It doesn't completely even things up, but considering that Universal has had the most titles out of any company, things are more balanced than they seem.

HD rentals are of shit quality though, which would be another strike against this being a good idea. The whole point of disc based HD media is to provide high quality HD content, which is the opposite of the SHIT that passes for downloadable HD content these days.

Uh, if you're going to separate studios for one into sub-studios based on nature of content, you should probably do the same for the other.

I relish all the Blu-Ray fanboys crying bitter tears in their pillow over this. A more obnoxious group has rarely been seen.

At the same time I'm bummed out. I've put all my eggs in the Blu-Ray basket. Shit.

I do want the format war to end.

Correct. Now Universal needs to stop sitting on their hands and unleash a beavy of movies all at once.
