Paranautical Activity pulled from Steam after dev threatens Gabe Newell

It's a shame the developer is so fucked up for whatever reason, because the game itself actually sounds pretty damn interesting
Paranautical Activity combines the classic FPS action of games like Doom and Quake, with the randomness and difficulty of modern roguelikes like Binding of Isaac and Spelunky.

And 2 years in development just flushed like this...

oh well, maybe they will pull Minecraft and manage to sell on their own webpage. Because contrary to popular belief, Steam does not have any kind of monopoly, and everyone is free to sell their own games on the internet.

Do you want to be the authority that makes that call for all future events just like this one between individuals? Please say yes.

Is there really no subtlety at all? As soon as I say "I'm going to kill..." on Twitter it's exactly as credible as the fatwa issued against Salman Rushdie? No distinction at all there?

Valve should cancel this guy's project because he's being a petulant asshole.

Are you saying Valve made the wrong decision then?

Why should Valve treat one indie dev like a good ole buddy and let dumb shit like that slide? What does Valve lose really?

"Oh god, we lost one game and one manic indie dev! What will we do?!"
No, they totally made the right decision.

Normally I would suggest that he sell it on some other service, but his outburst probably kept that from ever happening.

It's depressing because he's basically out of the industry now, regardless of who messed up (Spooder, of course). He has a temper, but I wasn't expecting it to blow now. Seems like he was really on edge, for the release of his first game.

Yep no ones really going to want to touch an unproven indie dev with that attitude.

If you want to sell something on a storefront you can't publicly shit on said storefront and make a death threat to its owner and expect everything to be peachy keen. Believe or not, the business world has an etiquette attached to it and nobody's going to put up with a business partner that openly spews garbage about them, especially over something that could've been resolved very easily.

What is a death threat, really?

Does anyone really think such comments are anything other than exaggeration for effect? I feel like all the sudden we've gotten all internet-serious about what are obviously jokes in bad taste. A credible threat to someone's life is terrible. Let's not conflate that with an asshole just being an asshole on Twitter.

Here's a tip: if you don't want people to think you're making death threats, don't say that you're going to kill people.

While I agree that people get way to bent out of shape when it comes to tasteless jokes, anything dealing with a death threat or physical harm is crossing the line. This especially with all the drama surrounding the gaming community lately.

... Doesn't that just seem like someone venting a bit immaturely? Hard to imagine a sane person actually contemplating someone that over such a thing.

I know death threats are a huge concern nowadays, but realistically, this doesn't stink of being an actual threat.

If you are by all accounts a mature adult, you don't go around publicly stating you are going to kill someone in such a fashion and then follow that up with Steam is total shit and monopoly as well.

Removing a product from steam because the dev is acting like a baby seems a bit childish to me and only serves to create more anger.

There's acting childish and then there's saying you're going to murder the ceo of the company you depend on, people take death threats seriously ya know.

Doesn't stink to you, perhaps, but that's a purely subjective judgment. Just like a bomb threat on a plane, it must be taken seriously. Just in case.

Any distinction made is completely subjective. Assuming that a death threat isn't real is probably a safe bet most of the time considering how liberal many idiots are with issuing them, but death is permanent and it's always better to err on the side of caution with these things.

I making a joke death threat OK? Should Steam tolerate that sort of behavior from developers?

Serious issues. Kid needs to take his meds, breathe and think long and hard if he wants to continue in any form of business venture

Dunno about you but there are way funnier jokes out there than "I'm gonna kill x. He is going to die."

Anyone questioning Valve's actions here seem to be contrarian for the sake of being contrarian. Valve isn't your best bud, they're a business partner. You shit talk or say dumb shit towards your business partner, and depending on your relevance to that partner's success, you either get the boot or you get a chance to fuck up.

Dude wasn't important to Valve, was a toxic business partner, Valve did what any business, good or bad, would do.

He threatened to kill the CEO of a business partner that he is dependent on to sell his product. So yeah, his "exaggeration" had an "effect." The "effect" being he just cost himself a lot of money.

Totally agree it was an idiotic move and Valve is right to can his game. No disagreement at all there.

Amen. He's just another indie dev. Valves doing him a favor by promoting his game and giving him a platform to get recognition for his game he wouldn't get on his own. When someones doing that for you its probably not best to piss them off because the reality is Valve doesn't need you.

Apparently he/they (not sure how many people worked on this game) were also doing the classic "ban people who say anything negative about our game on our Steam discussion page":

https://www.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/2jspdu/paranautical_activity_devs_begging_for_good/

Ooh Jim Sterling needs to get on this because we see more and more of this happen on steam. You because being critic isn't healthy at all smh some people.

Yup good move from valve can't blame them.

Yup. People need to stop seeing Valve as "Gaben" and see what they are: a storefront. A store owner doesn't HAVE to do business who you. It's not some inalienable right. If you act like a dick they can decide not to do business with you. If you were the maker of some indie hand soap company and threatened to kill the CEO of Walmart, would it shock you if Walmart told you and your product to fuck right off when you tried to get it carried on their shelves?

Welp for giggles I just bought it from the Humble store and retrieved my Steam key and received the "invalid product" message.

Wow.

EDIT: Whoop scratch that it went through when I tried a second time.

i'd like to hijack this thread to highlight a game in the same vein as paranautical activity,

tower of guns

jtw6J65RTmCpU.jpg

Tower of Guns is a fast paced first-person-shooter for the twitch gamer... with a few randomized elements to keep it fresh with each playthrough. It's a short burst "Lunch Break FPS"... not unlike Binding of Isaac mixed with Doom 2. Tower of Guns was made by a guy named Joe (with his brother Mike composing the music).

it's rad, you should play it !

Lol at the people who think it's not cool for Valve to pull the game. You can get banned on here for doing less, but a professional sending complaints and death threats over twitter should be swept under the rug? BS....actions have consequences and this is his.

Valve doesn't owe him a thing. Definitely not after they were trashed.

Nothing of value was lost, Tower of Guns is the super FPS rogue-lite.

Mostly kidding, though the dev's outburst was seriously immature and fucked up.
