I feel like this trend of mega-franchises is kind of new?

Not since the 80s has it been common for films to have four or five sequels, all released in close succession.

The chick from Paranormal Activity 1 had nice boobs. I have nothing to contribute to this thread other than that, I'm terribly sorry.

The thing I like about this series is that it takes so many cues from claims of actual demonologists and their encounters.

Reading about Ed and Lorraine Warren's experiences in the 70's reads like a Paranormal Activity script. Obviously the films take some liberties but they stick pretty close to the patterns of demon oppression/possession.

As bad as the films are, I love me some Paranormal Activity. Will probably wait for DVD, though. On a side note, when is Paranormal Activity 5 out?

these films are the only time I actually enjoy seeing this in a crowded theater so I can hear the rest of the audience freaking out. You've always got that one person in the back who shouts "Aww hell naw! run bitch!" and the 2 high school age friends who went on their own and are just hugging each other and have their eyes closed the entire time

I've only seen the first film, thought it was good from what I remember. This looks meh, is it worth watching the others?

Looks like Microsoft didn't pony up that marketing money this time.

The Conjuring is about the Warrens, and it's not a bad movie IMO. Check it out.

Saw kind of restarted this. The Saw movies were incredibly cheap to make and always did really well during Halloween. The profit they made with the first one was almost enough to pay for every sequel. Then PA come out costing even less than Saw and making even more money. PA took over Saw´s place as the annual Halloween horror franchise until this year where they took a break.
As they are so cheap and easy to make, that allows them to do quick spin-offs directed specially to specific markets like PA : Tokyo Nights for Asia and this last one for Latin markets.

You should. I watched it last night with a big group of friends and everyone loved it. James Wan is a fantastic director, it was really well done.
In terms of horror and scares, how would you rate it? I'm in the mood for a 'jump' film and may have to watch The Conjuring if it delivers on both.

I watched and enjoyed the first three movies but skipped the fourth due to its universally negative reception and the fact that it seems to add nothing to the franchise's mythology... did I get this right?

^^ It has some light story elements but PA3 is really the meat of it.

I'm pumped for this. I love the backstory of the PA movies 100000000x more than the movies themselves.

There are some great scares there. I´ve seen a few horror movies with my group of friends but I´ve never heard the girls scream so much as with The Conjuring. The boys didn´t scream but they jumped a lot.

Hispanic Paranormal Activity. Yeah, like someone in this thread mentioned, this will kill in the box office, especially with Hispanic audiences. Them lines will reach the stratosphere in my area. The ending made me chuckle, the two little girls then that random witch lady (or stoner dude) out of nowhere.
I am Hispanic.

I like that they're kinda going in a different direction....but I don't get what's going on. I guess I'll have to see the movie to find out!

Not really. It's the same movie over and over again.

That said. This one looks slightly different though with the whole super strength thing. Won't watch though.

The Conjuring was an excellent movie. Exceeded my expectations by far. The only problem that I have with it is that no sane person would bring a doll that creepy into their home. The real life doll was a raggedy Ann doll

I have the opposite feeling. When seeing a horror film I don't pay money to listen to people scream, squeal and laugh at scenes. It completely ruins the tension when they do that.

That's what pissed me off about it.

The tag line was "everything has been leading to this" or something like that and it gave zero answers. It's useless as a mythology builder.

So they've given up any pretense of logic or realism now, and it's just going to be one of those "found footage" movies where a main character inexplicably videotapes every interaction and conversation he has? And never puts the camera down even in situations of extreme danger?

What I liked about PA was that (most of the time) it made sense for the footage to exist. Honestly if they're going to do this they really should just drop the found footage angle altogether.

Haters be damned, I'm excited. I'm a sucker for the Paranormal Activity movies.. though, this one does look a fair bit different.

Looks interesting but surprisingly non-scary for a PA movie. Probably because the claustrophobic suburban home environment is being replaced with an open-ended urban environment.

So it's a spinoff?

I'm considering not going to the theater to see this after almost being kicked out last time for laughing too much with my buddies.

I agree for every other movie but the PA's have such a thin plot I prefer it this way. I think I get more entertainment out of the crowd than I do the film itself. It's like going to a haunted house where some people from your group are actually scared and screaming at everything, makes it more fun

The footage that exists didn't make sense after the first one and that was because they specifically positioned the cameras where the couple thought there was spooky ghost crap.

Anyway, I like that this one isn't focusing on boring suburban assholes.

If anyone hasnt seen these movies, watch the first and third...both very well done, well except that 3 is supposed to be set in the 1980s, but looks like the 2000s with some 80s toys thrown in
