parents naming their kids after videogame characters

Both Jade and Zelda are badass female names.

So it is not a legit name. It's short for Lincoln, with a C stylized as a K. Like the band Korn.

So are people given the Johnathan who go by Jon not really called Jon? I don't mean to be rude, but your argument is nonsensical. Link is a real name. Stylizing a nickname doesn't invalidate the name. What's more, very very few words in the English language end with a C, but many end with a K. Altering the spelling of a nickname to look more standardized isn't an very good argument about the legitimacy of a name.

Here's another example: Alexandre Dumas was a novelist, he's called Alexandre Dumas the Father. His son, also named Alexandre Dumas, was a playwright, he's called Alexandre Dumas the Son. There was another Alexandre Dumas though, the novelist's father, a general who helped Napoleon invade Egypt, but he is called Alex Dumas, because he went by Alex. Do you believe he shouldn't rightly be known as a famous Alex?

ah ah ah ah
I cannot believe at people idiocy.

I have a friend who named his first daughter Tali.

A year or so had passed and one night at a dinner, I pointed out that he had named her after a character from Mass Effect.

His wife flipped her shit when she discovered that their child was named after a video game character.

He was not allowed to name their second born.

I named my cat Street Fighter The Movie The Game The Cat (I call him street). I also named another cat Tekken but he met an unfortunate fate :(

Be glad I didn't have a child first.

Which isn't an issue at all, because it's customary to have 2 first names in the Philippines anyway.
I didn't know that. Well then, the example in the OP is kinda bogus it seems.

That reminds be, I always wanted to name my next dog after the GTA character Jack Howitzer. I'd call him Howie.

Its the movie Home Alone.

It was super popular in Germany in the 90s and there were tons of kids named after that.

I thought it was popular in the states too.
Kevin is a common name in the US though. I wouldn't ever guess that someone named Kevin was named after Home Alone because there are a ton of Kevins here.

My argument is: claiming a name is a real name, because 2 fictional characters and one musician (who stylized his nickname) is a stretch.

All these people reacting to two first names, what? It's usual for people in our country to have multiple first names. I think there was a kid here who had 26 first names one for each of the english alphabet and that's not even the longest named person. While I personally have a single name, it is common to have at least 2-4 first names. And yes, I am in the same country as the one OP posted and Nathan Drake is an acceptable name and no one will pick up that its from a game.

Nothing is wrong with Nathan or Drake, but coming the two is stupid.

I already have enough terrible friends/acquaintances who are legitimately going by shitty names from games, anime, etc. The worst being a girl who is going by Loli now.... Its creepy as fuck. So the idea of having someone name their kids after games comes with a lot of baggage. Even though some of the names aren't bad at all.

A boy named Yoshi and a girl named Yuna ;-))

I actually like the name Yuna.

On topic: The full Nathan Drake is a bit much but if they just used Nathan or Drake I say go for it. Honestly, I'm somewhat biased about these things because I have a unique name(although not a fictional character.) I guess for me It's not a big deal because people have named their children after characters in books forever so why not video games, anime, etc. That being said, I wouldn't name my kid Snake, Naruto, Johnny Quest, Ganondorf. I guess Ifor me it's more important that you like the sound of the name and not because you like the character.

At least your naming your kid after something that matters to you. My cousin named her kid after a character in Hotel Transylvania, which honestly made more sense than I thought.

Ah, thank you for the information, thats interesting to know.

In Germany Kevin was a rather unpopular name, but it gained popularity dramatically during the 90s from that movie.

Today, though, nobody names their kid Kevin anymore. It has a pretty bad reputation.

People quoting me like they're not reading the first time I responded to people bringing up phillipines and then you quoting other people saying this same shit:
Whether that's customary or not has nothing to do with the fact that it's dumb as shit since making both of them his first name means it's ALWAYS going to be an uncharted joke you can't unsee/unhear/separate. Just like I explained before, which had nothing to do with whether it's 'American' or not, the reason it becomes worse is because instead of being addressed and written normally as Nathan Lastname you now are always Nathan Drake. That's just as dumb as always being Lara Croft or Mario Mario. Simply the fact that 2 first names isn't uncommon has nothing to do with the part of it that makes it bad.

Meh I think his first name being Nathan Drake all together is silly, but hey it is his child. I would just simply name him Nathan.

My argument is: claiming a name is a real name, because 2 fictional characters and one musician (who stylized his nickname) is a stretch.
No, it's not. I provided a source for a name that predates a famous fictional character by over 50 years when it was implied that the name wasn't legitimate because its most famous use was in naming said fictional character. The name is uncommon, yes, but it is a real name.

Should people scoff if someone names their son Stone? It's an incredibly uncommon name, and I'm sure many people might scoff at it for being unusual, mundane, or even strange. But when you consider that Peter means stone, it starts to look like just another variation of a regular name.

I know someone who named her kid Ganon. I assumed it must have been an existing real name of some sort, since there was no other reason to think she was such a huge Zelda fan. Then one day I saw the kid's report card, and according to that his legal name is actually Ganondorf.

Nathan Drake is at least not so obvious, but I can't say the double first name thing isn't tacky.

I learned something too. I would have never guessed that the popularity of Home Alone would have enfluenced anyone's child naming decisions but apparently it did.
I was curious if it was a more popular name in the US after the movie's release. In 1990, 1991, and 1994 (after the movie had been out for a while) it was in the low to mid-20's on the Top 100 Boy Names list but was actually slightly more popular in 1988 and 1989 before the movie came out. Now it isn't even on the list, what with all the "Aiden," "Liam," and other trendy names. My name (Nicholas) has even dropped into the 30's.

Yeesh, that's tacky. I could see Gannon, as that's a real surname, being given as a middle name, but Ganondorf is made up gibberish so far as I can tell.

If I ever decided to have a kid I would probably seriously consider Lucas or Zelda. They're both nice, subtle references (one less so than the other, granted) and I don't think anyone would give them a hard time for it.

Ganondorf or Kumatora though? Now we're stretching it a little.
Beartiger it is then

If it's a regular sounding name, then I think it's fine. I would've kept the Drake out though. I still haven't thought of what names I'd give to my kids, but I guess my first boy will be called Sebastián, as that's my middle name but no one calls me that, only my dad used to, and it sounds much better than my first name, which is a plain sounding Luis.

Literally worse than Hitler!

People need to realise they're naming a child that will grow up and start handing in CVs.

Can't wait for interviewers to throw CVs with Khaleesi Sephiroth Saitoshi-San Thompson on the top straight into the trash!

All of these low-tier names and no one came up with the best* ones?

If it's a boy, EDGE MAVERICK
If it's a girl, Lymle Lemuri Phi

I have no problem naming their child after a VG or any popular culture.

If it's two girls: Callie and Marie (splatoon)

If it's two boys: Billy and Jimmy (Double Dragon)

Boy and Girl: Nana and Popo (Ice Climbers.

All of my animals are anime/videogame/myth names.

Cat - Temari (Naruto)
Dog Shiba Inu - Kiba (Naruto)
Bearded Dragon - Tiamat (Final Fantasy and mythos)
Russian Tortoise - Genbu (Final Fantasy and mythos)
Hedgehogs - Sonic and Amy (my son named these)

I'm going to call my kid Geralt Roger Eric du Haute-Bellegarde, and no one will stop me.

Seriously though, if they had called him Nathan (First name) Drake (Middle Name), it wouldn't have been that bad. Instead they called him Nathan Drake Tot [can't see the rest] Something, which is just silly. No one needs that many names.
