Is this a new thing? When I hit "download now" on the newly added PS+ games this week, I got prompted for my account password on each of them. This never happened before. Why is it happening now?

Zone: EU.

The only thing different on my end is that I recently fully depleted my wallet balance to 0.00€ when doing a purchase. It used to hang around 32 Cents before, when I didn't get prompted.

Not happening for me. I set up Okami HD to download a little while ago and it started downloading just fine. No password prompt.

I don't have any funds in my wallet either.

I hope it doesn't start to spread, would be a bitch having to enter my password every single time I want to download something from Plus.

It's not just PS+ stuff. I got it when I wanted to download free demos too.

Really fucking annoying since I use 1Password to store my password, and can never remember any individual one I keep for a site or service.

Happened to me when I tried to get the Injustice demo.

Turn off "Prompt for Password on purchases".

Before it only required my password for purchases that cost money. It's only this week that the behaviour has changed to include free content.

I have intentionally switched the password prompt on, because I don't want one of my younger cousins or nephews to buy something on my console when they're visiting and I'm not at home. Yes, this happened once. I don't want to have to enter my password every time I download free content.
