Path of Exile (F2P Loot Hack 'n Slash) Open beta later this year

is the game hard? I got owned on the second shore, right after the encampment.

Can be. Depends on the class really. Get a wand of some kind and range things down. Works for all classes and helps you get your first few levels without too much issue. Just make sure you don't run into packs of monsters, try and pull 1 or 2 away and kill them.

Made some more decisions about my warrior build tonight.

Going two-handed Cleave/AoE build. No clue how it'll work out, and Im expecting to be squishy but I'm hoping I'll be able to mitigate it with passives and decent gear.

Cleave seems like a decent skill, and I just picked up another AoE skill called Inferno Blade. If I kill someone with Inferno Blade they explode and do damage to everyone around them with a chance to set them on fire. The only problem with the IB skill is the AoE doesn't seem to be that large and the fire chance seems low.

P.S, need some friends on here. My character's name is Baeldur.

I'm thinking of trying the game this weekend, can anyone pinpoint to me a really hard class to play? And by hard i mean microintensive, with lots of spells/skills to use and stuff like that, not weak.

hmm witch or assasin but it depend how you want to play. You can create strenght class which will use a lot of diffrent skills.

Which class should I pick if I want to use a big two-hander and smash things? Will anything work or do I have to go Marauder?

So are people looking at this as the progression from D2 rather than the what we got for D3??

I did not play Diablo 3, but coming from Diablo 2, it really feels... a very different game from the exactly same genre.
It really looks the clonier Diablo clone on the face of the planet the first 5 minutes, but it quickly becomes something that don't compare. It's a very different game.

I mean, just the way you think about progression, with gems and the long passive tree and the way stats relates to specific defensive and offensive bonus, to the crafting system. It is not really a progression, really feels more like a tangent, as it definetly touches Diablo in a signficant way, but then it just goes off into the horizon.

Act 1&2 are both really boring and the actual gameplay and skills aren't very interesting. The game has a lot of good mechanics, but other than that I'm not very impressed.

Really hoping to see another build of the week, but they've probably got their hands full with the beta. Hope they continue doing it though.

Sure it makes up a lot by having more customization options and potential for much more interesting loot, but the core gameplay is lacking

What do you mean by "core gameplay". As someone who thought D3 was ok I felt like D3 nailed the presentation perfectly, combat felt great in terms of the animations and feedback I got from attacks landing but it pretty much lacked everywhere else. PoE isn't the most polished game but plays a lot better. While combat doesn't feel as smooth to me as D3 did, I know that on a technical level it's much better.

Hopefully what I said makes sense to everyone.

"Presentation" isn't combat/animations/feedback. Presentation is something else entirely. What syllogism means is the core gameplay (the combat, meaning abilities, feedback, hit detection, animations, "oomph") sucks compared to D3... and it does IMO. The fact that GGG is saying "we're working on it, stay tuned" means little when it would take a huge revamp to make it up to par. I think they'll improve bits and pieces of it but it'll never compare to the smoothness and overall feel that D3 combat provides, they're just too small of a dev team.

I agree about PoE's mechanics in that they're deeper and provide more customization, but the core gameplay is simply not up to par.

How are animations and "oomph" core gameplay?

How are animations and "oomph" core gameplay?

They're part of the combat, which is the core gameplay. Animation canceling, animation responsiveness when using abilities, all that's part of the combat. "Oomph" is the hit feedback you feel when using your abilities and attacks, which is again a part of the combat although more superficial it's still a big aspect.

I get quite a lot of satisfation out of the melee hits in PoE. In PoE, it looks and sounds like you're hitting shit with a club, in D3 it looks and sounds like you're hitting shit with a bazooka (not to say that isn't fun, because it is).

D3 has undoubtably a smoother and more polished feel to the combat. PoE is very rough and ready. I actually like both approaches, and feel neither one is a negative.

Combat is far better in Diablo 3. And of course it's on a whole different level in terms of polish. This game so far seems to have more varied customization (obviously, with that monster of a skill tree). Not sure if that makes it better than D3.

It still doesnt matter that much when drawback of that smoothness is sync issues that causes to melee attacks hit from much further than they should and inability to dodge projectiles.
As i said before, they dont need that much of fixing, cancelable and faster animations [with delay afterwards for example], melee animations that moves You forward and buffs cast without animation in movement would change game drastically.

Ps. I'm watching yesterday Kripp's stream and i have no words, what is this? o_0

Just played for an hour or two, seems completely awesome. Really like how some of the systems work. I really won't have the time to play for a week or two, but once I do I'm buying in. Had more fun in that hour or two then I did in the last hundred or so hours I played in D3, no lie. To be fair though I have no way of knowing if PoE will hold up, but it seems pretty solid at least, and is $50 less than D3 is so it's a win-win either way.

Blizz doesn't give a shit about attack animation. Things will hit you when they start an attack animation even when you're miles away.

As designed.

Blizz Presentation =/= good gameplay

It's just a visual reward that does nothing for gameplay mechanics.

It has been really cool to see members of the dev team hanging out in chat talking with people. Learned that they have only one lighting guy and one main animator. Crazy!

Rare item drops. I am with a full inventory, so I create a portal to go to town, sell stuff and go back to my yellow goodness. (shoes that are a better version of what I am wearing right now)

I sell everything, am about to click the portal when disconnect. T_T

Damn you, beta gods!!!!!!

If you were worried about the game holding up, check out the end game system the just added. It is pretty awesome.

- Maps are random end game dungeons that drop off level 60 monsters
- Maps have random properties like items that increse the difficulty
- You can use crafting items on maps

A small Team ^^

Imagine what they could do with 10-15 more people :O

After 2 months of not playing, i am really in again because the Open Beta is more far away than planned and i can´t wait so long...

PoE is already my most played game since WoW Classic/BC.

Yeah I knew it was a small team but I didn't realize just how small until today. I am truly impressed.

I will happily support this game with more cash once the shop is up and running.
