sometimes you discover your favorite band in your late 20s. it just goes to show, never stop digging., you never know at what age in your life you'll discover something that will resonate

What I expected when opening the thread:

Very disappointing, I have to say :( Where's the love for asphalt ? I thought I was going to read a love letter to pavements everywhere.

Pavement were my favorite band when I was 17. I don't know, people like what they like and it is good to dive into things that are new to you even if they are not new. Seems like back then people used to overthink music a lot but now they barely think about it all.

Love Pavement. Hadn't listened to them in years and then last week they popped back on my radar so this thread was nice to see pop up.

If you want to expand a little further then I got to give a shout out to the off shoots:

Spiral Stair's band Preston School of Industry

Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks

I remember seeing them in 1992 in Edinburgh Scotland. It wasn't very good.
Sorry.
It wasn't really the band at fault. I was into heavier Sub Pop type stuff (Grunge) at the time, and my flatmate had a spare ticket as he got dumped my his girlfriend at the time!

That would have been early on before they fired their alcoholic drummer who messed everything up.

Two drummers. That's one whole drummer more than most bands have. Love Pavement, every single track on Crooked Rain Crooked Rain is a banger.

An Umarell (plural: umarelli) is a popular Italian term used to describe retired men who spend their time watching construction sites or roadworks. They are a beloved cultural phenomenon, often seen leaning forward with their hands clasped behind their backs, observing the work and offering unrequested advice to the builders

Stephen Malkmus's solo/Jicks stuff is great, I actually prefer it to Pavement.

Saw his show a few years back, it was surprisingly rowdy. He did a lot of playing guitar behind his head, and a couple of drunks in the audience kept heckling, so one of the band (can't remember if it was the drummer or the bass player) jumped into the crowd to fight them. Not what I expected from a group that plays 8-minute prog rock jams.

I saw the Jicks play when the debut came out. There was an annoying bunch in the crowd that kept yelling at them to play Pavement songs. No fighting during that gig, but I wouldn't have complained if someone threw a few punches their way.

That's what the hecklers in this show were doing - yelling for Pavement songs over and over again, until the guy snapped.

This was in the UK, Bristol, 2018. So I guess if it happenes everywhere they go, year after year, they'll be pretty sick of it. The heckers were thrown out by security after the musician had got a few licks in.

Steve Albini seemed to be a controversial producer because he did absolutely nothing other than record the bands. While Phil Spector was controversial for shooting a woman, but loved for compressing the sounds on recordings until they sounded like total shit.

Ahh! I have a soft spot for the album "A Christmas Gift for you from Phil Spector." I play it every Christmas season and my kid loves it too., but he seemed to be a mad cunt.
I was lucky enough to see Nirvana and the Pixies play live back in the day. Albini did more than simply record the bands as they played.
Ah! Sorry for the derail. Back to Pavement.

Recording is already a lot. Its the main part even. But people complain they can't properly hear the vocals on his records because he didn't do anything with them to make them stand out.

Albini seemed to be a major dick - he attacked so many of the bands he worked with, and wrote songs and articles purely for shock value. He belatedly apologised for being such an edgelord, then died.
