PC Gaming-Age: Dirty Ports Edition

You just picked up the two worst ports in the history of PC gaming. SR2 is really embarassing, but thanks god (god = developers) nowadays console -> pc ports are usually much butter than they used to be.

Onimusha 3, it came out around the same time RE4 port did.

where shall start? first it was like only 5$ so i wasnt mad at all. the list below is with the latest/only patch released.

list of problems
1. game crashes randomnly at any given time.

2.since the ps2 version had no changing controller layout, the pc version had an ugly out of place black n green menu for it, that exits fullscreen mode everytime you wanna change the layout, which is everytime because it keeps defaulting back to the keyboard.

As for Japanese publishers...

- Koei still doesn't get it (Dynasty Warriors 6 is a joke)
- Sega has lots of room for improvement (PS2 ports of multiplat games, high system requirements)
- Square-Enix seems promising (judging by the TLR benchmark)
- Capcom's Framework engine is awesome for PC owners (Lost Planet was fine, but DMC4 was amazing)

Also i had the hardest time trying to map my PS3 controller, proly just me though.

when the game started up, it ran fine. but i feel like im forgot something...........

I dont get why you buy or even try games specifically developed for consoles first anyway. I don't even consider them proper pc games.

Ok first bit I agree with you.

Stranglehold - No remapple keys! That's right, it uses presets! Also, it bears the GFW logo but has no actual 360 controller support. This runs great too though!

Shit. I was looking forward to mouse control. I guess I'll just learn to love the console version.

Seriously, DMC4 ran like a dream on my PC with a solid 60FPS at 1680x1050 with 8xAA and max settings.

I wish more games that look as good as it does played as well as it did.

The game has mouse control, AgentOtaku was probably referring to the fact that you're stuck with the WASD keys.

I am so glad I decided to buy SR2 for console. Even though the framerate is still shit, it's still really playable.

I would have bought it for PC if there hadn't been a month gap between release. Same For GTA4.

I think I'll just stay away from open world PC games. Except for maybe Mafia 2.

That's cool. I don't even consider you a proper gamer of any kind.

anyway, it's not nearly so recent but the last-gen PoP trilogy is mostly shitty ports to PC. The only one that works is Sands of Time, while Warrior Within may as well require gamepad controls because it doesn't work well at all with KB + Mouse (which is dumb considering they mapped all the abilities to KB + Mouse easily for SoT). Two Thrones is more or less the same but god fucking dammit it has this retarded bug with climbing chains that is literally a game-ending bug for me. I can't get past maybe 1/5 through the game because the prince will randomly not climb down chains and this one is while you're the Dark Prince, who has his whole life bar slowly draining away unless you kill someone and get some sands of time for regen, and you can't just jump off it because it's an instant death fall. Fucking Ubisoft, and specifically fucking stupid Ubisoft Montreal can go eat a dick.

Fixed that for you.

The Gamecube version of Two Thrones was the first console game to ever crash on me.

I know, there's a demo thread, but just a quick question about the FEAR 2 demo: is this game 16:9 only, even in 16:10 resolutions for everyone else? I'm running it in 1440x900 and get black bars at the top and bottom. Would indeed show a lack of effort if Monolith wouldn't include proper fullscreen support in 16:10 resolutions. After all, this game has a pedigree on the PC.

I think at this point we can assume the lack of 16:10 was an oversight on their part and that we will see it in the final release. FEAR1 had 16:10 support patched in to for the record....

A lot of these 360 to PC ports are a really simple thing:

They virtualize the 360 on the PC and run the native code on it. It's really quick and dirty, creates INSANE system requirements and doesn't have mouse support.

Guitar Hero 3 PC has the same problem. If there's a game that shouldn't need a beefy rig, it's Guitar Hero...

Have you guys actually seen the framerate of the console versions of SR2? It was much better right out of the box on PC, even more so with the patch.

What? ...the console version's framerate is fine considering it's genre. On PC, I can run something like Crysis with an average of 40fps on "High" settings, but I can't get SR2 to his the 20s at any given time ....it's a piece of shit port with no regard to optimization.

the capcom turn around from last gen to this gen is jaw dropping to be honest.

i know they farmed out the ports to other devs last gen and have been doing them in house this gen, but all the same. even that shows a large change in attitude.

RE4 required ridiculous amounts of downloads and patches to get it looking good, and even then it was still missing a tonne of effects from the GC version. remember v1.0 that had NO LIGHTING AT ALL? everything was full bright.

IN A HORROR GAME.

Yeah, I was too lazy and didn't get around making a "Clean Port Edition" yet, but yes, Capcom is fucking god this gen, especially with their PC side of things. It just pisses me off to no end thinking about how LP and DMC4 got no love sales wise ...not to mention random PC poo-heads who were like "mmeeh, it doesn't play well with a Keyboard and mouse ...it's a POS"

yeah. those comments about pads always wind me up. heard the same about Dead Space too. a 360 pad is a mandatory purchase for a PC owner these days. i think most people should suck it up and get one, and i think ultimately they'll be glad they did.

the DMC4 port was awesome. i have high hopes for the RE5 port that will hopefully happen later this year.

If you didn't have a controller it is, by far, the worst PC port I've played.

Good example ....already mentioned Capcom's ugly outsourced ports era
