Pc gaming.... why wait for next gen when we have it now?

Depends. If you are an MMO, RTS fan the PC is machine of your choice, if you have other preferences you may be better off with PS3/360. There are just too many awesome games that are not out for the PC, the exclusives, JRPGS, Red Dead Redemption, the platinum games stuff, Castlevania and so on.

There is no depends. Most games are released on PC now and they are all grossly superior. Even butchered ports like Saints Row 2 at least can be run at higher res and framerates, not to mention mod support.

So I finally got my gaming PC up and running and seeing games I played on the PS3 and Xbox 360 now in 1080p with solid 60fps and AA and AF has been a real eye opener. I just sat there and kept saying to myself... I can't go back to my PS3 and Xbox 360.

I know people will say well the consoles have exclusive games and your right.... but I guess I am a major graphics whore now. I just cant get over how much better gaming on pc is, its an insane difference!
This must be a conspiracy, there's a friend of mine who made the jump from PS3-only to PC a couple weeks ago and he literally said the same exact thing. :lol

Welcome to the fold. :)

I like having the extra frames and res, but there's nothing on PC that feels beyond current-gen consoles in a "next gen" kind of way. We all know why.

But I'm one of those people that takes 2 minutes to adjust back to 30fps gameplay and aliasing when I go to play a console game and then I don't even think about it

Yes. You just bought the PC, no need to become a huge fanboy on day one.

Next round of systems should be able to handle BF3 at 1080p with ease. Obviously over time, developers will lower some settings to try to get more out of the system, but it remains to be seen how that will be done.

Ha..

If you think Next Gen system will run Battlefield 3 in Ultra or even high in 1080p , your going to be VERY disappointed. Also forget that running at 60fps and AA and AF....

Its not going to happen, sorry.

I like my PC more than any console, but I also like consoles because A) My TV is much bigger and prettier than my monitor and B) I like to stand instead of sit as much as possible, which doesn't work very well with PC.

True.
Todays PC games are basically 360/PS3 games in 1080P/60fps and some nice AA, thats it.
The real graphics jump will come with 720/PS4.

WHile true on the overall, there are plenty of games already out that can pass as next gen games. And by next gen I mean just simply on the resolutions and high quality AA. I suspect devs will shoot for better visuals while retaining 30fps meaning the PC versions will probably ultimately look better as well since devs will pack better effects and textures in while PC will further enhance that.

That's a double edged sword but I still see plenty of games on PC right now that will pass as next gen games on console and run at butter smooth 60fps at 1080p, today.

Between the pc and my currently bought wii, I don't see a need for the ps3 or 360.

Going into next gen my PC and a Wii-U should suffice for all my gaming needs. Not that I won't miss out on any platform exclusives from Sony or Microsoft. It's just with work, family, etc,. I don't have a lot of time to game much anyway and the PC + a console is more than enough for me.

Yeah, BF3 or Witcher 2 on max graphics are just like 360/PS3 games, aren't they? I see your point, but "extra frames and res" plus tons of effects that consoles can't do add up to make them truly next-gen.

Exclusives (Zelda ain't coming to PC)

Windows blows (Mac is getting better for gaming, finally)

I have nothing against those who love PC gaming, I just gave it up years ago (Was solely PC/computer gamer for nearly 20 years) for the reasons above.

To me, the difference running at 1080p, 60 fps and AA and AF makes the console ports look like on another level.... it really does. 60 fps alone is HUGE...

Thanks! I don't think I am going to leave this time. Im sure he felt the same as me, it was a huge upgrade and I am now excited to play games again!

So why are we holding our breathes for next gen? From what I can see, next gen system wont be near as powerful as high end pc's are now, there is just no way they can be. This is different then when the 360 and ps3 came out. I know the consoles will be coded to the metal, which does help but I personally dont see next gen running native 1080p, 60 fps, gobs of AA and AF and looking like say crysis 3 or battlefield 3.
The problem here is that most PC games are being created with console limitations in mind. PC versions of these games include plenty of improvements, but are still limited by the base game.

A next generation of consoles will allow developers to target a much faster baseline machine.

Those games DO look better on the PC, but they DO NOT look like completely different games. Also, The Witcher 2 has dreadful animation for simply running around which does hurt the visual presentation a bit (not really a performance issue, of course).

I expect the next generation of visuals to push well beyond those games. Half-Life 2 and Far Cry were released just before the current generation and were well beyond anything on the consoles as the time (the XBOX ports really were much less close to the PC versions) but we've seen much better on consoles since that point. I expect games like The Witcher 2 will age a similar fashion (remain lovely, but outclassed technically).

As i said, there are just too much of my favourite games that i can´t get on the PC, playing multiplats in 1080p/60 fps isn´t enough to overcome this.

Wait, people actually use the comfy couch argument?

If a title comes to PC, I generally get that instead of the console version. PC gaming is glorious! However, there are some great exclusives to each console I can't pass. In the end, it's good to have both PC and consoles.

How these threads work:

- People who don't own a gaming PC: "The difference isn't that big, you can only play MMOs and OH EXCLUSIVES!"

- People who do own a gaming PC: "Holy shit, I'm never going back. This thing has EVERYTHING and it looks 10x better!"

It's the circle of life PC gaming.

Except I play my Wii games (including Xenoblade and Skyward Sword) perfectly on my PC at 4x the Wii resolution. I own a Wii but have no reason to ever play games on it. I also emulate PS2 at that same resolution, so I have all the jrpgs I could want. There are some jrpgs on PS3 and 360 I couldn't play, I guess, but other than that... the PC has everything one could want. The vast majority of console games also come out on PC.

Also you seem to know NOTHING AT ALL about PC gaming, considering your statement about only playing FPS on it. I'm guessing you don't follow the PC gaming scene at all, no news sites, no podcasts, no nothing. I'm right, aren't I?

Those games were made specifically for consoles, and would not exist otherwise. The fact someone has written an excellent emulator does not mean you can count them as part of the PC library.

I used to play games exclusively on PC, but no longer due to all the DRM/lock-in platforms like Steam. So yes, I admit I probably don't follow PC gaming as closely as some.

And better online, more input options, mostly always cheaper, better modding community....

Because the PC has a poor range of games. If you like FPS games, great. If you like 3D platformers or JRPGs, it's terrible.

Ultimately the games will always win over graphics. The Wii has the best games of this generation, despite not being as powerful as the other two consoles.

and I'm out

-Won't argue with cheaper. You get what you pay for after all.

- I can play Zelda on my PC right now and it'll look better than it would on Wii.

- I can put my PC on my living room TV if I wanted to. It's no harder than plugging a console in.

- Double click and play

- Going to have to explain that one to me. It supports a 360 pad just fine and that's all you need really.

Over the long run I'm not sure if console gaming is cheaper. The games on PC are so cheap that it may make up the difference for a gamer who buys lots of titles over the long-term.

I have a PC hooked up to my TV, and I play with a gamepad all the time. I am playing Alan Wake, Last Remnant, Fallout NV, and Tomb Raider with a 360 controller right now. It's fundamentally identical to the 360 version. I played Fallout 3 on 360 and the interface and gameplay on NV PC with the 360 pad is the same. These arguments don't have merit anymore.

Consoles are great because they are simple and have some great exclusives (though not as many as they used to). But a PC can be almost as convenient.

Load up XBMC, set up the launcher, and you barely ever have to interact with the Windows UI. And "pop in and play" doesn't get any more simple than just clicking on a button - no disc swaps needed.

Ha..

I just assumed you were making a sarcastic post until the end. But it seems you truly believe this all and are serious. Either that or you're just really good and got me. Either way, well done.

It's never really the case. To build a PC today, that will outperform PS480 on multiplatform titles for the next eight years would cost significantly more than those consoles will cost.

Yes, any PC today can crush the consoles, but PC's from 2005 can't.

Why Buy a Car & a Truck when you can have both?

I can play every Zelda game ever released on my PC, sitting on my comfy couch, with my 360 standard controller that I also use in every other game.

It really shows you've been out of the loop.

I play in my living room on my 55" tv.

What do you mean a gamepad? I use my xbox 360 controller for pretty much everything.

Wait, people actually use the comfy couch argument?

Why not? That's pretty much how I decide to play a game... if I don't feel like sitting, I'll play the console so I can stand. Until I can afford a standing desk that is... /drool

They actually are, to me. The Witcher 2 is especially underwhelming (comparatively speaking!) with its invisible walls and small environments and no more unique environmental detail or onscreen activity than Uncharted 2. The effects slathered on top don't do much for me (to be fair my PC won't run it at 60 with EVERY effect on, not that that bothers me). It's nothing like going from a good looking PS2 game to a good looking PS3 game (like Killzone 1 to Killzone 2).

You shouldn't pirate games, let alone be proud of the fact.

True. Hopefully the next-gen consoles deliver.

He is talking about emulation, not pirating.

Pc has a pretty poor library of fighters and shmups. My 360 basically works as a fighting/shooting box, with some other game every now and then (Platinum stuff and Ninja Gaiden).

That initial investment keeps me from joining the master race. Yeah, I could do it incrementally but I could just buy a next Gen console. It's a cycle I would love to break one day.

A solid gaming pc costs what a PS3 did at launch, plus you can get recent AAA releases for like $5 during Steam sales. Not to mention all of the amazing mods, Incredible free 2 play games like Team Fortress 2 and Tribes Ascend. I found owning a 360 to be more expensive than pc gaming. $60 games, paying for online indie games on XBLA cost as much as 6 month old major releases on pc, etc.

I would bite kittens for fighting games on PC. TTT2 is going to be a blurry mess. Makes me sad. :(

Pretty much with the argument that couch gaming is better... and that pc gaming doenst have gamepad... like the above reply ugh.

Fact is this, those who have not seen or played a console game on the pc at 1080p, 60 fps, AA and AF... you have no idea what your missing... NO idea. Its a vast difference and likely one you would not want to go back to the 720p 30fps console version.

You shouldn't pirate games, let alone be proud of the fact.

Huh? Who said anything about pirating?

Fighters, that's true. Schmups, partially true. It doesn't have Cave stuff (I play those on 360 too) but tons and tons of indie games instead.

This is generally true, but I don't even have a desk or an office chair..so I have to add that to my "investment" cost. Laptop on my lap will have to do for now.

Wait, people actually use the comfy couch argument?

If someone asks, sure. I can't stand gaming at my desk any more and no way am I putting my pc in the lounge. In the recent Steam Summer sale there were a number of games I was interested in but when thinking about how I would have to play at my desk I couldn't pull the trigger. Only PC game I've finished in maybe 8 years is limbo.

I've always prefered consoles because of the simplicity of it, I just cant be arsed with the awkardness PC gaming brings. Plus my knowledge of them is pretty shit.

Huh? Who said anything about pirating?

You said you could play every Zelda game made on your PC.

Possbily you have the actual discs for Skyward Sword, Windwaker etc, so you can use them directly and legally with emulators.

But how are you able to play the NES, Gameboy etc. games on an emulator? Unless you're telling me you bought the hardware which lets you dump your own physical cartridge to a ROM...

It's really not awkward these days. PC gaming has never been easier.

Is there really an issue with downloading a rom provided you already own the hardware and software?
