Penny Arcade - A Penetrating Look - 12/12/08 (HOME)

Home doesn't really deliver on any of the promise it could (or should) have. It's a beta, sure, but it's a fairly useless product. It's disappointing because the premise isn't a bad one. A place to meet people, play games, and matchmake is a pretty nice idea. It just really fails at delivering on all three. It's a completely failed project.

Sony Europe is so weird. I don't understand Europeans.

The question, does Sony realize that? I guess they are still going to champion it as on of their flagship products and try to improve upon it over time.

I don't know why I felt compelled to do this, but I did.

I was in the mall and a dude was doing the running man and was saying "Join my train."

Pretty soon we had about 20 people in a train, all yelling "Come choo choo right in!" Was pretty awesome actually.

Been in the beta for some time and trust me - this is NOTHING new and get's OLD really fast...

I dunno. I don't see how NXE and Home are really comparable projects. Besides the fact that they both have avatars, I don't see a parallel. NXE for me is about improving the blades UI and the increasingly unwieldy store interface. On the PS3, no one's complaining about the XMB or the store UI that was already improved earlier this year.

I am. - Why should I have to rollover/highlight a tiny icon to fully understand what it is? Try sifting through the GH:WT or Rock Band add ons and you'll understand....

Gary,

When are you guys going to apologize (eat crow) for your prediction that this was the year of the ps3 and that by MGS4, sony sales would sky rocket and ape 360's.

Love the podcast by the way.
Haha. I got flamed when I bashed the PS3 and flamed when I tried to defend it. There's just something about the PS brand that seems to bring out the worse in everyone. No wonder we stopped doing the podcast ;)

Rest assured, after the latest NPD numbers and the reaction so far to HOME I think it's safe to say you won't be hearing any more "Year of the PS3" talk out of me. Or out of anyone else who doesn't want to look like an idiot.

This was discussed in the avatar comparison and I saw it mentioned on the first page but Sackboys... It's probably too late now since so many people have personally experienced the horror that is Home but it was really the way to go. Cute, customizable and likely a lot more fun to interact with than the Home zombies.

It would have required a completely different line of thinking where it came to realistic environments but I'm sure it would have worked better than this end result. I tried my best to give Home a fair chance but the other night after I spent the better part of a half hour trying to arrange my digital belongings in my new summer home I realized I never wanted to see it again.

Well okay, maybe not 2008 - but 2009...right? :D

Being that its been out for a whole of a day; the knee-jerk 'disaster' negativity is a tad misplaced. However, the criticisms against Home are legitimate; in reality however, its somewhat representative of the 'PS3 story' as a whole. Home is another example of the "Mañana" syndrome that Sony suffers from, 'always promising tomorrow what it can't deliver today.'

The PS3 has been a turtle this generation. It isn't an agile player in the market; when it launched it was expensive, and it still is, but it was proclaiming what a powerful machine it was, but only years later with Killzone2 are we actually seeing that promise manifest. The whole Blu-ray integration, which contributed to the cost, was introduced in a market back in 2006 where HD penetration was still low and people didn't have 1080p TVs, its impact is still dubious. Now with Home, we have what seems to be promising, but is critically flawed and is not connected to the games its meant to play (with the exception of Warhawk). Without being able to party up with people and enter and leave games its just another virtual room filled with vapid assholes.

Maybe Home will be relevant in a year; maybe Sony should have canned the whole 'open beta' thing and absorbed the criticism for the delay. Thing is, I wouldn't claim to know. Maybe this 'grand vision' and long-term thinking will pay-off. The turtle did win the race after all.

LOL coming capture the experience perfectly. My girl was in the room watching wondering WTF the point was.. meanwhile I was trying to figure out how to push or punch someone... whole thing was making me antsy to beat something up.

BTW - awesome job on the Mario

Here is everything you need to understand about Home, if you should accidentally launch it from your XMB: press and hold the Playstation button in the center of your Dual-Shock or Sixaxis controller. From the menu that appears, select Quit.

:lol :lol Wow. Poor Sony.

Sony, cut your losses and give us a free version of XBL gold. You know, what you could have and should have been doing by now?

social network - check
game launching - half a check
3rd party environments - check
in-home games - check
custumizable personal space - check

party system for game launches- half a check

YES COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY A FAILED PROJECT>.... IT ABSOLUTELY DID NOTHING IT ORIGINALLY SET OUT TO DO... I AM SO DISAPPOINTED....

seriously... OBVIOUSLY it's not the best thing in the world... but some statements in here are simply ridiculous... alot of the things they set out to do have been done... They have been done in a somewhat crappy way (having to physically wait to play a in-home game ... etc etc) but seriously... some of you guys are going overboard with the hate

Perfect, because its true. Who thought putting in WAITING lines for the arcade/bowling/ect was a good idea?

Guess not the same people who think logging into a social/networking platform to play crap flash games is a good idea.

So if you set out out to fail and fail does that mean you fail at failing? :lol

Being able to launch one game (warhawk) out of I dont know, 200? that are available on PS3 is HALF a check? WTF?

Where can I form a party? Hm? Where? A consistent one? You know what the word "Party" means in MMO and gaming-terms, do you?

Delayed by a year and still nowhere near a finished state, much less this amazing and captivating experience they pitched it to be. That's not a failure?

speculawyer said:
Well . .. . they already do that.
Complete with audio messages? The ability to launch into any game with a friend? Come on, they have the basic focus down which is playing games online for free, and I applaud them for that. But why burn through millions of dollars on cash on this failed experience when you can have feature for feature plus more to what is available on the other competitors system?

They are so close to matching it, but they choose to throw away money on this. It is frustrating.

The question is not whether Home is *able* to do these things, but whether it is able to do them in such a way that makes them worth doing (for the consumer). Hence, the earlier poster was saying Sony didn't really deliver on the promise of being able to do these things in an enjoyable way, I believe. Personally I haven't even tried it yet - I still have Uncharted in its shrinkwrap.

Look I'm not advocating that its finished... and I'm not saying That its executed properly... I'm just saying its not tripe....

Its not Jesus Christ the savior of man... but it aint Adolf Hilter either.... I Just think some people need to look at things with a grain of salt.

Can you log on and chat and socialize with friends? Or strangers? In an easier and more fluid way than previously available on the PS3? yes.

Can you go play mini games? with friends? or Strangers? Yes

Can you invite bitches back to your crib and do the running man with them? yes.

Its not the worse thing ever guys... I mean... at least its a little bit more than a HQ Wii Parade? And its free.... so what is it that some folk here have vested sooo much into that make them sooo angry at this project?

WE ALL wanted it to be more streamlined...... but its not complete and utter crap.
I went online and was cracking up straight for 3 hours... why? doing the running man... watching chicks reject guys..., went and got my bowling on... played some echochrome, that train puzzle game., .... Got invited to a club party by a stranger where the DJ was playing Ghostbusters over his headphones... then everyone dressing up like trannys and bum rushing the bowling alley......

I haven't played it since that time... but its not complete and utter crap like some folks would make it out to be... There IS some fun to be had in Home...

When Home was 1st announced, didn't like the idea at all. After trying it last night, it's even worse than I thought.

Are they beating up Michael Jackson back there?
i am in my office at work and i'm trying SO HARD not to burst out laughing, and i'm fucking failing at doing so.

the idea that someone would create this virtual world for players to populate and then throw in michael jackson for people to gangrape is just the funniest fucking think in the world to me right now

I don't know what's creepier, a guy sucking another guy in public or the crowd of dudes that gather around the event.

That reminds me, I was walking through the large public area and I walked right into an avatar with his legs folded around the head of another avatar standing near the big screen park and I instinctively ran away just like I would if I saw that in real life :lol

Isn't the queueing and watching other people play the main point of Home?

It's a "real world" environment whatever 4D-space, that means everyone is interacting in realtime with each other ie. standing watching some punk play pacman.

If you want to play pool/pacman/bowling for yourself and be able to play it anytime, like a videogame, pay for it and launch it from your home space/XMB.

Slag off the customization, I would have loved them to put in characters from games/real life/cartoons, and I wish the environments were more stylized, but complaining that an application finally provides a community where you are "living" in realtime and viewing what everyone else is doing, that finally does the "4D" that Sony have been talking about, is missing the point.

I really can't tell if this is a serious post or not! :lol

Seriously though you can't even properly watch people play the games.

I'm kinda confused. Most of news headlines read "the beta of home is now available to all". Does it mean it is still in beta but now open to everyone or this is a release version? Haven't downloaded yet.

I ain't seen Home yet, I'll have a go at my friends tomorrow. I had assumed that you could get a good view of the bowling alley/arcade game and watch other people play in real time, just like you watch people chat or dance or simulate sex; if not and the bowling area is blocked off and you're stuck in a virtual queue, then it's crap.

Chris Remo said:
If it is, why would anyone want that?

Not that it is literally the main point of Home, just that because it's a "real world" environment and everything within it is happening you can view people playing games, and as a concequence also have to wait to partake in certain events.

but if we could avoid lines in the real world, we would.

It's like how just about every piece of internet software is called a "beta" even though it's fully available for all to use. That way, when problems arise, they can say "Oh well it's still in beta."

I haven't fired up the PS3 in a while - is the Home download compulsory or is it optional? I'd prefer not to download it at all, if possible.
