Oh god yes; I've dealt with this. What I've done when people cc me in an e-mail for no reason is I will reprimand them in an e-mail and then cc the whole office so everyone gets the point.

The way I'm reading this is that you're CC-ing the reprimand to the whole office. If so, then word of advice: Don't. Humiliating an employee by publicly reprimanding them effectively in front of the entire office is a sure-fire way to eventually end up on the receiving end of a lawsuit. It also tells the entire world you're a grade-A asshole.

If you're privately reprimanding the person responsible, but then sending a mail to the entire team on the appropriate use of email without singling out a specific individual then fine. But that isn't how what you've written reads.

I never do that, but I do CC my own manager on a lot of my emails to cover my own ass when people start fucking up.

I hate those people too, op. It's worse for us cause our boss is a push over and gets rolled by everyone outside the department. This is so bad for morale in the office because we feel like he doesn't have our back.

Everyone i work with does this even though my manager has said multiple times that he doesnt have time for emails that dont pertain to him

You're thinking of the factory model. People get paid for results, not for being "busy".

Besides the workplace today is shortstaffed, you need to be highly motivated and a self starter. Bosses are overworked as is. They can't be tracking every employee.

At my big company here in NYC it is veryyyyy common practice to cc the boss because like someone said earlier if you are using someone as a resource from a different department the boss would like to know

I have never seen anyone take issue with it

This is my first and only job ive had so who knows

If it's established as policy either by the department/company or your boss explicitly stated they want to be CC'd for particular types of messages, that's one thing. Most of the people replying to the thread are talking about when it isn't.

What bothers me about the cc'ing, is when the replies go back and forth and someone higher than a line manager is copied in. I hate clogging up the inbox of heads and directors with chatter. Never be afraid to delete a cc.

It's actually happening to me right now. This guy can't tell me what to do and he knows I really dislike him. So in the email he CCs my boss along with some random person in management when he makes a request to do something to me and the Lead who actually tells me what to do. It's always a last minute thing when I am currently already working on something else that he requested previously. He later calls me to ask me what I am doing and when I told him that I am doing something else, he questions me why I am doing that instead of what he requested.

That shithead should talk to the lead and quit involving me, I don't work for him, I don't take orders from him, I aint doing shit unless it directly from the mouth or email from the lead.

Yeah, she's a cunt. She also e-mailed my sister (and once again cc'ing our boss) once saying "I was at your office at 7am and you weren't there." which is so fucked up since my sister didn't start until 8 lol.

She said yesterday "The teachers of the restaurant course must be retarded, for real...Oh, you must think I hate everyone!" and I just replied "Well, it makes me think what you say about me behind my back." but she just replied "I don't, I really don't do that." Like I would believe that. ^_^
