People who hold the door open for you...

When you're a mile away. Why? Now I have to run as to not make that person wait for me. I have to be polite and say thank you. Why Though? You just made me run. Just go inside, let go of the door. I'm on time. Let it go.

Am I the only one who experiences this?

I'm glad you're able to appreciate these nice gestures. Maybe wear a badge on your shoulder indicating you don't like social interaction or have anxiety.

I have no issues holding doors open for people, though it's slightly awkward when I'm holding the door open to leave - only for a bunch of people to walk right in before I can get out.

I think there were like 10 people who rushed into the restaurant while I was holding the door open because I was fishing my keys out of my pocket before walking out.

I hate the jog of gratitude if I'm forced to do it, but on the other hand I am one of those people who holds the door for someone 20 feet behind them. I feel rude if I don't hold it. Basically when it comes to door-holding I'm a huge hypocrite.

I have a colleague who opens doors for me when we go out to lunch, which makes me feel obligated to open the next door for him. It is ruining my life.

I think we should be friends. I've never met anyone else who gets as scathing mad as I do about this. Such a simple, benign gesture. Polite, even. But no, fuck them. Fuck them in their stupid asses. No really, thanks a pant load, Shit-For-Brains. Who said chivalry is dead? Clearly they haven't shared an intersection with the beacon of manners, Mr. Wave-Along. You think you're better than me?

I'll even pretend to be looking down at something just so that I have an excuse to ignore their pathetic waving, and eventually they'll get the hint and obey the rule of the road.

Anywho, what was this thread about then? People holding the door for me from slightly far out? Nah, they're fine.

I use the 5 second rule. Since doors take 2-3 seconds to close automatically, it seems rude to let the door close on someone if there just so far away.

Of course it gets slightly awkward at long distance, but I'd always speed up a bit just to show appreciation and say thank you. I think it's a really good gesture, as opposed to slamming the door right in my face

I just throw the door open really far and walk through. Most doors have the piston that slows them down so that gives the far away guy 3-4 seconds. If he was really in a hurry he will run to grab it. If not it will close. I am no where near the situation when that decision occurs though so no awkwardness.

Fuck this whole custom.

I'm perfectly capable of navigating a doorway no matter what state of opening/closing the door is in. The level of effort necessary to open a door that is closed vs. one part way open is so negligible I don't understand why you would think I would have a problem with it. Door's have been operating in the same fashion for a while now, I think I have the pattern figured out.

I hate that situation where there are two doors to pass through to get into a building, someone holds the first one for you and either you hold the second one for them or feel like an asshole. But then the act of holding the door for each other just ends up in a zero-sum of courtesy. Might as well just open the door for yourself and made things simpler.

When I hold the door for people I deem "close enough," I don't expect them to hurry up. If I needed them to walk faster, I wouldn't hold the door in the first place.

Worst thing is when you open a door for yourself and people rush in without even a "thank you"

Makes me want to grab them and throw them back outside >:l

Now I'm going to hold doors open all the time just for the off chance that I can piss off one of you mouth-breathers who get irritated at a nice gesture from a stranger.

The solution is to never help anyone. It's the only way to avoid slightly socially awkward contact with human earthlings.

Yes, that is exactly the situation I was thinking of. Thank you for eloquently putting into words how I feel.

You know what I think is worse? When you hold the door open for someone and they walk through, avoid eye contact, and don't acknowledge you at all or say thank you.

Its like...holding doors isn't my job I'm being courteous! Its especially annoying when its old people, I thought they were more polite!?!

some people do useless shit all the time. It's called courtesy, in case you aren't aware
