Yeah, I'm in this boat.
Halo music is pretty much all I listen to.

I love video game music and have dozens of albums. However, I also love electronic and alternative music, and I find video game music not very fitting for rides, so video game music is for studying/lounging, and electronic and alternative for driving. Right now, I'm listening to Skyrim Atmospheres
Pretty much, music is all too often used as an indicator of social class, as petty as it is to do so...Basically never play video game music in front of non-gamers because they simply will not understand and I don't blame the- BLUAAAHH LAHHH LAAAAA BLUAAAHHH ARRRRR

To a young adolescent mind, it makes sense. You love video games, so you want to immerse yourself with reminders of them at all times. Video game music is a natural extension of that. You're enjoying the music more for the nostalgia and memories than the actual quality of the tracks.
Eventually most people grow out of their crappy-music phase.

I have been taking a ride to school and back with a friend of mine who's a pretty big gamer. He has an AUX cable in the car and connects his iPod and plays the music of video games that he plays. Basically, it's music from popular games like Zelda, Persona, and Resident Evil. Now, I am not opposed to him playing video game OSTs, I know people listen to them - hell I sometimes listen to film scores. However, he pretty much only puts video game music on.
Luckily, he allows me to put up the music I listen to as well but he always criticizes the shit out of it. Which would be fine if he was a music critic or something be he isn't. I was playing the new Drake album on our ride home this evening, and started with Tuscan Leather.
"This has to be the most annoying intro I have ever heard"
and then I switched to Worst Behavior
"This is so repetitive, why does he keep saying the same shit?"
now I know using the Drake example is asking for trouble but it's not just Drake. I listen to other music to, Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, and other stuff and every time I put those on he goes quite and acts like hes suffering.
So I guess the question I am asking is how many of you guys listen to video game music exclusively, but more importantly why do you prefer to artist/band based music?

I do think it's worth trying to listen to more stuff, but that's why you'd just find a type of music you like and hit up Pandora, iTunes radio, whatever. Either you broaden the number of artists and tracks you listen to or at least you get some variety of stuff you'd enjoy if you're properly applying likes/dislikes.It's.... a bit disheartening that me preferring to listen to Video Game OST is apparently enough to qualify me to be called names and stuff, especially in GAF
I mean, I do listen to other music occasionally, especially jazz and orchestrated music, but not nearly as often as I do listening to Game OSTs. It's sad that people would jeer and point fingers towards me just because of that, as if preference doesn't play a part in what music people like to hear and enjoy.
Yeah, well, I tend to just listen to whatever I enjoy. I don't think I can even describe it well, maybe a game song will nail it, maybe something from a more respected band, or just some random pop song somehow has a tune I really like even if I won't really want to admit it. Though I have gotten tired of most FF music and now something like Blind Guardian bores me when I used to really like them. It's a form of immaturity.

Something like Pandora has a "game" music station but it's mainly just Halo, Nintendo, and Final Fantasy, you don't exactly get a wide variety of Japanese game soundtracks in those or even that many American ones.
This is BS the track I posted back there is from a game I have never played before and it's one of my favorites. You need to grow up yourself
For me the 'problem' isn't actually the type of music (and as said before vg music is not a genre) it's that somebody is just exclusively obsessing over a particular thing. I'm an open minded person, I believe people should pretty much be able to do what they want as long as it's not hurting anyone else or too illegal, however, just playing video games and listening to soundtracks is unhealthy. How are you meant to get anywhere or do anything in life ?
There's nothing wrong with preferring it, but purely listening to it and shutting out everything else that isn't from a game? Completely different story.
I agree.
Even if I hadn't played The Last Story, I would still think that Toberu Mono is a beautiful song.
It's weird that some people only listen to game music? Yeah. But it's their taste, not mine.
Sometimes I listen to movies music. I have The Lord of the Rings OST here. Although I don't listen only this, I can relate myself a little with those people.
What the fuck am I reading.
This is like the people who only read those Halo novels.
Expand your horizons, people.
