PES 2008 demo on Marketplace

Just wanted to point out that the graphics are not much to write home about, like the grass and the lighting. One thing where they are fantastic though, is in the characters faces, VERY recognizable and much better than Fifa's in that respect.

Then of course the game still plays like WE, so thats awesome.

Finally got onto gamershell's mirror. Wish my usual place for demo's had it as I'd rather grab it at 1mb/s instead of this poxy 90kb/s.

That's the PC version that's supposed to be the same as the PS3/360 versions? hm.

Played a handful of matches. Seems good so far, typical demo niggling problems that may or may not get fixed.. heck as far as we know this is the same demo build from GDC. But here's a few points from me:

- I'm enjoying the 360° running around when I'm without the ball but it's an entirely different issue when I have possession. Still the same old movements from past PES.
- Like others have said, face mapping looks great this time around. Ronaldo even has a bit of baby fat going on in his face :lol
- I'm not sure if this is a blessing or a curse, but I could barely take a clear shot outside the box as most of the goals I scored were corners/cross-ins or just tackling a defender with the ball and running on for a cheap goal. No idea if this is because I feel a bit more "trapped" due to the default camera since I usually play it in Wide and feel that there is more space.. or Konami just upped the AI. Everytime I entered the opposition half I was getting boxed in.
- Gameplay is very fast compared to past games in the series. Gotta be on the ball throughout the entire game it feels.. but I'm not too sure if this is due to it being a demo and Konami varying the speed due to that or not. Guess we'll find out in the final product.

And since I know you're grabbing the PC version as well, here's a better random screenshot I took. Team kits are weird because I accidentally left Brazil on blue alongside France's blue kit.

Nice, that looks considerably better than the earlier screenshot. The mentions of ease scoring from corners has me a bit concerned, but we'll see.

here me d/l the pc demo version. the 360 version left me very dissapointed but thats nothing new with the 360 verson of pro evos.

What settings are you using? High? Do you have more pics that you can share?

I can only run the game at medium settings. It runs pretty well overall. At 1024x768 I get a stable 60 fps during gameplay. It runs as smoothly as PES6 on my system - except during cut scenes. Medium settings only look slightly better than PES6 though. The players are vastly improved but everything else looks about the same. The grass looks as bad as ever in medium settings.

Don't like how fast the game has become. To me the game has taken a big step in the wrong direction as far as gameplay is concerned :/

Thanks for the impressions and thanks for the screen! :) That one looks much better, great even.

I just downloaded and played the Demo, but it didn't allow me to set settings to high. Hopefully you can decide which features to toggle individually in the final version (even if it won't be officially supported). That said, it still looked ok, player models and animations are a vast improvement over last year's, imo. Shooting is not as finicky as before, and the return of the diving button is awesome. :D

Definitely better than the FIFA 08 Demo I tried out last week. (Then again, that is the port of the PS2 version, so it plays ok, but looks bad). So PES 2008 PC beats FIFA 08 PC on both counts this year.

What do you think of the speed of the gameplay and the scoring? Does it feel more like PES 5 or 6? Damn, I really can't wait to finally try this out (even have a 360 pad, whoo).

IIRC PES5 is faster than PES6 but nowhere near this fast. It's a huge change from PES6. Makes the game feel like FIFA :/

Well, the more the game feels like PES 5 and the less it feels like PES 6 the better afaic. It was the stickiness of the ball that got to me in 6. 5 had some reffing issues and other little AI quirks, but the feel was incredible and those issues are largely irrelevant to me since I play almost no single-player.

I picked the highest difficulty so I didn't have too many chances to score (first game even was a 0-0 ^_^; ), but the shooting and scoring felt better - particularly shots with a defender right beside/behind me were not 'tap the button slightly and it still goes 10m over the bar', but varied from being shots that the keeper easily picked up, to being blocked by the defender's desperate tackle, to going over the bar because I was a bit too generous with the shot.

The speed of passes and overall gameplay is much faster than 6, closer to 5, imo. Passing is fluent and the players feel under your control all the time. Not the ball, though - especially when receiving bullet, or high passes, players sometimes have a bit of a problem to control the ball properly. Very realistic, done with nice animations (you'll immediately spot some new ones when you cross the ball once or twice). The player's response time is quick and efficient though, not sluggish like in FIFA 08.

First impression: it's really good.

oh, and did I say that the diving button is awesome? :D

I downloaded the PC demo.
I have no space in C:

I try to install on E: forcing the path (when it asks me)
Evevif I see the correct path E:\Konami\Demo when installing it gives me error "not enough space in C".

Strange, isn't it?
Are you able to install this demo NOT ON C:\?

Just played a game of PES6. It's much better than PES2008 IMO. The pace of the game is much closer to real football.

PES2008 runs quite a bit better though which is a positive surprise. I can play PES2008 at 1024x768, medium settings with AA enabled at 60 fps while PES6, high settings (looks worse than PES2008 medium settings), AA enabled struggles at 800x600 (runs fine without AA though).

Grrreat, now I'm really kicking myself for not starting the download before I left home this morning.

Man, I really hope the PS3 demo comes out soon. I sooo can not wait any longer.

Anyone with the demo knows if you can start side stepping from stand-still? I always felt that was something that WE series should add.

Yeah running it on high. Hopefully there'll be some more settings during the game to tinker with for PC's. Also a few more pics at 4:3 setting.

Decent crowd shot. Though they still look like a pixellated mess from distance as the next pic will show.

Also notice the grass effect.

Really disappointed with the PC demo. I've got a SM3.0 card, but for some reason it refuses to let me set it to the High Quality graphics setting. My card is a 7600GT, and the game is looking like shit in Medium detail. Anyone got a fix for that.

Also have tried setting it 16:9, but again, there's no widescreen resolutions in the settings. Well annoying.

Apart from that, I'm pleased with the gameplay changes from the previous version.

Well, you can install it on any disk, but it needs around 2GB on disk C: for temporary files during install. You'll get that space back, do just move some non critical files from C to E to free 2.5GB or so and move them back after install.

You can probably change windows temporary directory to other volume somehow, but its more complicated than simple move/move procedure.

Up close the crowd looks much better at high settings. The distance shot doesn't look much better than when running the game at medium settings. The volumetric grass is the only obvious difference but you can still tell that the underlying texture is shit. Why the hell can't they make a decent grass texture?

Also, are the sound effects awful for anyone else? I sure as hell hope they're just placeholder samples for the demo as the audio is worse than in the previous versions.

I know how you feel 6 days worth to catch upto everyone else.

For the love of god why did I retire from playing Pro Evo 6 LAST WEEK. X_X

Thanks mate.
I guess it asks for more than 2GB on C.
Anyway I will try to move some stuff as you suggest.

Thanks again!

Yeah I am really disliking the same constant sound of players ruffling against each other.

I enjoyed what I played, but for the love of god why did they not let the demo be two players?!

:lol

I know for sure I'm going to take many sound thrashings when the online league goes live.

2 players. good teams. will be enough for cheap ass gamers not to buy the game, they will live for 5 mins a game

That grass effect in front looks fine, infinitely better than the usual shitty ground texture. Too bad it ends a few meters away from the camera, so the shitty texture is nearly everywhere... again.

*sigh* There's definitely some disappointing stuff visually, but 1) the gameplay is ace and 2) it does look much better than the FIFA 08 PC version, which is my benchmark for the competition.

Thanks for the screens, speedpop!

Well yeah, but even Fifa did a good demo for 2 players... nothing to gnash teeth over, just a little disappointing.

Oh well, only a month until release :3

Any confirmation from Sony or Konami abou PSN demo?

Thou shalt feel thy wrath of absence of thee Pro Evo in thine PSN store this Turdsday.

I'll spam the PS blog or something.

Seconded. I have a Shader 3.0 card but I'm not allowed to set the settings to 'high'. :( How much RAM does your 7600GT have?

Anyone know what's up or how to work around it? Would really like to at least test the high settings.

Beh, after finally getting the d/l working it won't even run properly (7950GTX 512MB). I'm guessing it has something to do with my having Vista 64 w/ 4GB of RAM since I had the same problem with Vampire (<64 MB VRAM error) but there's no way I'm going into hexedit to fix this. Bring on the PSN demo!

On second thought:

Right now this is totally unofficial, but I've heard some pretty bad news for the PS3 owners who were hoping to be able to download the PES 2008 demo today. As many of you know Sony only update PSN every Thursday, meaning if the owners were going to get a demo it would be today.

After talking to a few guys in the business though things look grim. It's now most likely the demo will be released next Thursday, with the consolation of a new video put up instead.

So far this hasn't been confirmed, and to be fair I certainly hope I'm wrong. We'll let you know as soon as we hear anything.

It's another downer on Sony's behalf. We know it's something Konami have no control over, let's just hope Sony get it sorted out asap.

D'oh.

Just finished downloading the PC Demo after thinking it would appear on PSN today (:lol ) and played a few matches.

First the technical side, ran great on high settings but I got seemingly random slowdown when everyone was in the box (One second it would be fine, then for a short period it would drop frames for no reason, even though nobody has moved)

Was also suprised that the game setup my PS2 controller (via USB Adapter) perfectly except the Select + Start buttons were swapped around. Very nice, maybe Games For Windows is useful after all.

Now onto the gameplay...I love it and hate it at the same time :lol I feel that the players move far too quickly and that they control the ball and change direction way too quickly, especially with Ronaldinho, Kaka or C. Ronaldo. I ripped teams apart time and time again with them on Top Player with them alone.

Also, after playing the FIFA 08 demo, the "jostling for the ball" seems completely unrealistic, sometimes you can be putting pressure on someone and have them run half way down the pitch before losing the ball!

The shooting seems great though, I keep undercooking all my shots because the power bar moves much slower now. I'm worried about the keepers though, (Hopefully it's just the demo AI being stupid) they always seemed to rush towards me, even when defenders were close by leading to either an easy chip or an easy tap in for my strike partner.

Speaking of poor AI...what the heck is up with the defence? I only played 5 games but the number of easy through passes I had were unreal, really poor marking. I hope people don't become like the AI in terms of slide tackles because I never saw the AI mess a slide tackle up, quite annoying. (I know it's Top Player but give me a break!)

As much as I hate some of this stuff and how different it feels...it still felt like Pro Evo which suprised me and I had a load of fun. And the diving is hillarious, couldn't fool the referee once either which I guess is a good sign. If Konami have done anything right, diving from kick off is one of them! :lol

Anyway, looks like FIFA 2008 and PES 2008 will both be great purchases.
