Pets in America: Serious business

Do you want a corgi because they have cute little faces and feet?

Because a Corgi is oh so much work.

I love my little guy but damn do I spend alot of time on him.

I have a 4 year old Pembroke and she just sits around until I want her to do something.

Pets are awesome, but paying for them is a bit douchey considering there are thousands waiting for a home or to be put to sleep.

WHY DID I BECOME ALLERGIC TO DOGS AND CATS GOD WHY I HATE YOU!

The concept of paying upwards to thousands of dollars to adopt
or "buy", you sick bastard
a pet from a breeder is absolutely alien to me. I just mind my own business, and I always end up with a ton of animals whether I like it or not.

Family dinner? I now am in possession of a pregnant stray cat.

On break at work? Oh, sup newborn kitten? I guess I'm stuck with you now, eh?

Interesting that they would use a pure-bred German Shepherd. Aren't they notorious for deteriorating health later in life? Certainly would add to the expense.

And that the car does not need gas or maintenance or anything.

My favorite thought is the boy with the lizards.

3 of my dogs were from shelters.

My corgi was from a home where he was being abused by kids all day long. I had to rescue him. (I'm still bitter about your "rehoming" fee)

Fucken bastards! They charged you? Should have called animal control and adopt from them.

Still, good on you for rescuing that little dude.

I'm a man and I'm not saying I fucked a pet before. I'm saying that I know myself pretty well and what I would eventually do. IF I ever did adopt a pet, eventually my curious thoughts would get the better of me and I would fuck it.

Knowing this, I can't justify the adoption of one.
You should get a venomous scorpion as a pet. I'm sure the temptation would go away.

Pretty awesome! How old are they?

They will be 4 months old in just 3 more days. Got them from a rescue at 8 weeks old in Nov.

We got them a Cat tree, and I have this amazing drink well thing coming. ALready spent money on them that I would have used for other things like drinking/ect so it's worked out great lol. Our kittens are awesome.

The only pet I ever had was a chicken. And she was awesome especially when it gets dark and she climbs on my shoulder trying to sleep. Plus she gave me eggs so that was like free breakfast.

At times I think I'd love to have a pet, but I just wouldn't feel right leaving it alone while working full time. As much as I know having a pet would bring joy to my life or how good rescuing a pet would make me feel I just know that it simply wouldn't fit into my life.

Oh weird, kinda how I feel about having a boyfriend!

Too many people buy pets they can't afford or don't actually want to take responsibility for. It's kind of sad. It's similar to how people have children they can't afford, or aren't mature enough to be responsible for.

I want a Belgian Malinois.

But I found out they are like $1000+

They're like a more wirey German Shepherd (I think they look more muscalar but they seem slightly smaller too). In my limited experience they've got a bit more aggression too. And of couse, as I'm sure you're aware, US and UKSF use them a fair bit! Lovely looking dogs IMO.

This. Which is why we got kittens not a puppy. Until I am older, have a great job and my own place with a backyard I don't feel I can properly care for a dog. Cats are a little more self sufficient don't require quite as much space nor attention. Although we do play with them a lot. Dogs are just in some senses a large responsibility.

Holy Obesity. Cute dog but man you need to take her for some walks.

Haha, pic was from a couple of years ago when we first got her. She weighed 54 pounds. We walk her about 2 miles a day and she's down to around 42 pounds now and she's on Science Diet light dog food which is the lowest calorie food you can give to a dog.

She's the sweetest dog in the world, but she is one lazy fucking hound dog. Not good for much of anything except catching fleas. She doesn't move from the couch very much. She won't fetch or play with a ball. She just sits and sleeps all day until we make her go for a walk. Not sure if all beagles are like this, but the vet said if you don't keep them active they will get real fat in a hurry.

So according to that i could get a vw jetta for the price of a german sheppard. Guess what i chose.

Btw i drive a VW Scirocco ;)

This was a horrible infograph. Ugh. Good inforgraphs integrate the graphics with the facts, not just randomly throw pie charts and letters together on the wall. You're better off just having all that info into bullet points.

With that said, I convinced my sister to adopt two cute little shelter pups(a pom pom and a teacup chihuahua) instead of buying them from silly puppy mill pet shops. And she was willing to pay $1500! Suffice to say, I never got off her back about it lol.

Here's my addition to the pet overpopulation problem..4 dogs, all rescues.

Banjo (Border Collie)...

Bruno (German Shepherd mix who we found him in the middle of the road, hit by a car)...

I think we're done. Wife has a tendancy to bring dogs home at random.

I sent my GF the OP to read and she scrolled and read this comment. YOU MADE HER CRY FairyD you bastard!

edit: I'm joining in on the fun! My Cat "celebrating" XMas as Rudolf!

Interesting. I just started looking for a dog yesterday and considered making a thread about it.

Anybody own a yorkshire/norfolk/norwich terrier?

Interesting list, but other than a brief mention of the euthanization rate of shelter animals, it pretty much completely glosses over the issue of pet abandonments and animal abuse and the overall cost of these tragedies.

I have two dogs, an Akita and a Jack Rusell (lol). The Jack Russell was bought for like $40 and sleeps in a hand me down kennell and gets fed regular supermarket brand food and is about 11 years old now and still as hyper as ever. My Akita was $2000, and cost a few hundred more in Vaccinations etc. I also feed him on super expensive dog food, which is around $90-$100 per 15kg-18kg bag. He eats around 1kg a day lol, is nearly 8 months old and weighs 45kg.

The point is, owners can choose how much to spend on their pets. Personally, I dont see Oscar (the Akita) as an expense at all, he is my companion and I absolutely love him.

Heres a funny picture of them waiting to be let inside after I came home from work.

I've been browsing craigslist's pet section, and I see alot of dogs for free to a good home, or a less than a hundred bucks... Would this be a good place to go about getting a dog? Anyone have any experience with it?

We're posting pet pics now?

Go get 'em Weem!

Well worth whatever I have spent in the 4+ years we've had her. Even the trip to the shelter, which was soul crushing.
