PewDiePie Plays Sunset Overdrive

I don't hate PDP. I indifferent him.

I find it a worrying trend that major youtubers with lots of influence are basically running advertisements disguised as ordinary content and not disclosing it. If you don't find that worrying then I find that worrying.

I guess I just don't take the video game media that seriously. I'm sure he got paid to do this video, but I just don't see a reason to care. He made a silly video showing off the game. If some people liked what they saw and buy it, we should be upset about that?

Oh no, it's over. This guy put Skate 3 back on charts after one video. Millions of kids aged 7-16 are going to want an X1 to play this game.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=916402Seems to be the Sunset Overdrive discussion thread right now, if you wanna talk about the game. No more OTs a week before launch, so there's not really one major hype thread anymore.

Yeah, but I mean, what does a thread filled with people talking about their distaste for PewDiePie have to do with gaming besides the fact that he plays games? I mean I don't think that was what the OP was trying to get out of starting this thread, but whatever.

Well, PDP I feel is generally terrified. For PT, he sat listening to the demonic radio you get in the red room, trying to translate what was being said. That look on his face was legit weird

Yeah I guess can sometimes be legit scared. PT has been the only game to really scare me in a long time. Haven't been scared of a game since the original Resident Evil when I was a pre-teen. So I can believe he was scared of that.

Let's not pretend to hold PewDiePie up to some high journalistic standard.

Do you think his fans give 2 shits if he was paid to showcase a game ? They tune in to see him do, and say dumb shit.

I don't particularly watch Youtube personalities, so no I don't find that worrying. Why should I find that worrying?

But why? He's not a reviewer or a member of the press. He's just a guy.

It's against FTC's guidelines for the use of endorsements in advertising, which demand full disclosure when there is "a connection between the endorser and the seller of the advertised product that might materially affect the weight or credibility of the endorsement."

Why is it dirty? He's not a journalist. He's an entertainer. He gets paid to play games and babble about them. It's like any TV show hyping up upcoming movies. Not that it's a perfect analogy, but when watching Conan play games, nobody holds him to journalistic integrity when it comes to reviewing games, because he isn't a game journalist either.

That video is like 15 minutes long and it's titled "THIS. GAME. IS. AWESOME! - Sunset Overdrive." Come now, that's almost a bit too obvious that it was just a purchased opinion.

Agreed, he isn't a journalist or trying to be one so let him make his money. Guy basically took what some of use dreamed of doing and made himself a millionaire. I'm just not his demographic though.

Early copy, early access, monster click-bait headline, Phil tweeting and not asking youtube to put it down.....Yep, a transfer has been made.

PewdiePie should be clear with his viewers about it (but it defeats the purpose of the whole transaction to begin with + a major dissuasion)....then again he's no journalist, just a Youtube celebrity for hire.

I don't see why PewdiePie gets the hate. Dude works his butt off making those videos, and has an appeal to a certain demographic that CONTINUALLY watch his content. So, hey, congratz.

Oh so your just looking out for us

What difference would it make? You KNOW the man is getting paid to do these things, the entire world knows.

Betcha many of his viewers don't. As a matter of fact those that "pay" are counting on this very fact. It's all about being as genuine as possible and removing the salesman tag off your shoulders. People suspect salesman, not good ol PewdiePie.

I love Pewds, thanks for the thread OP. Fuck the haters.

Man, don't fuck me. I never insulted PewDiePie's fans. I just put my personal opinion of him in the thread. I hope we're cool dude.

Oh so your just looking out for us

Well of course, weren't we all putting in our preorders for Sunset Overdrive because PewDiePie said it was cool. Now that we know he was paid, Pre-Order Cancelled !!!

If I can't trust PewDiePie's opinion on games, who the hell can I trust ?

Assuming this paid endorsement was disclosed, why then should I worry?

Again, I don't look to PDP's opinion on the credibility of a game, or any Youtube personality/reviewer for that matter.

That's the question I asked.

I prefer a world where if I'm watching youtubers (for the most part I don't, but I'm open to the idea of it) I know when they're being impartial and giving an honest untainted opinion, and also when they're doing a sponsored ad. There should be more rules and guidelines on this.

I watch Boogie2998 every now and then, and, admirably, he discloses which videos are paid ads. Because of this, I can view his videos in proper context and I don't hold any of it against him. I may also watch the paid sponsored videos. I don't mind people paying the bills. It doesn't even mean the video will not have any value to viewers -- I just like knowing, and putting things into their proper place.

So why is this guy popular? Ive never heard of him. What makes him different from other streamers? The way he talks is kinda strange....like a speech impediment or something.

It's all about numbers.
Someone explained the logic of Youtube and how PewPewdie benefit from it.

To resume simply : he began to make "let's play" videos earlier than anyone else. Somehow, he got some viewers then become a little popular. So on youtube when you enter that cycle. Your videos will become more and more popular because they willl be always in the TOP 10. Multiply that with 10 years of being an active Youtuber and "bing" a "miracle" happened you're the most watched guy on youtube. It's all about being regular Youtuber/streamer for many years.

Does he say that you should buy the game? And I dont even know if that law would affect him since he is not living in the US.

Hey you're a member now :)

But why? He's not a reviewer or a member of the press. He's just a guy.
That's exactly why big publishers love him and other Youtube personalities like him and are so eager to pay to have their games shown on the channel.

From a publishers pov, Youtube influencers combine all the positives they're looking for - a wide reach and strong influence on a young and easily manipulated demographic, while having none of the journalistic ethics strings attached, like forced disclosure or attempted neutrality.

Early copy, early access, monster click-bait headline, Phil tweeting and not asking youtube to put it down.....Yep, a transfer has been made.

If he got it without a transfer I don't believe Phil would say no to the biggest youtuber to play there game.

And while I think this game looks like this years borefest where the only thing you do is jump and go on rails he might like it.

It's "PewDiePie Plays Sunset Overdrive." Not "15 minutes of Sunset Overdrive gameplay".
This content is to be watched for PewDiePie's personality.

Yeah but I hardly ever see anybody's opinion on what he's playing, like now. There have been many threads where it is a video of PewDiePie and it's just this same thing over and over. Is the point to have a quarterly thread so everyone has a chance to hammer on him? I get it. People hate him for one reason or another. Cool.

Anyway I guess I'm out of this thread. Nothing being talked about here really.

He's not bad or annoying... he's just boring. High production values on someone devoid of personality. Weird speech patterns, though. It's like he's reading a script and doing a really bad job at sounding natural.

Never heard of him but watched around 7 mins, not really seeing his appeal. He is popular or something?

Either way, pretty excited for this game!

After watching this video I feel like Sunset Overdrive and Pewdiepie are a match made in heaven. Game is trying to hard to be funny, just like Pewdiepie. Master of badasserie?! Penis gun?! The explosion that says "apocalypse" and train. Cheesy as hell. Pewdiepie the game. Maybe I'm getting old.

There is always the possibility, no doubt. Though knowing the nature of the business and the nature of his work, me, as well as others here are more inclined to lean to the other opinion.

PewDiePie is not my cup of tea in the slightest, but I'm hoping his endorsement of this game gives it a lot of traffic. I want this thing to sell well, I don't want publishers associating colorful new IPs with bad sales.

I'm guessing a huge chunk of his fans are between 10 and 16 years old. Kids love loud and random, and that's exactly what he is.

I'm not gonna hate on him though. It's just not my cup o tea.

Everybody on NeoGaf needs to be old enough to have a school or business email address to join. So I doubt there are any fans of PewDiePie on here.

Does he have to adhere to these guidelines?

He's already subject to YouTube's copyright laws, but that's it. Also, is doing a Let's Play considered an endorsement?

I think you're heavily over exaggerating PDP's effect. One video from him is not going to convince millions of kids to shell out $400 to play one game.

Not sure if you're being sarcastic though.

A lot of people on GAF are negative about PewDiePie. There is a community on GAF that likes his content though, so there should probably be a community thread to discuss his videos in a more positive fashion, rather than this quarterly hate thread.

But what if the game is not that good?

Does he say that you should buy the game? And I dont even know if that law would affect him since he is not living in the US.

He doesn't have to say buy the game, all he gotta do is talk about the game in non negative way, it's called endorsement. And most countries should have similar guidelines to FTC, especially European countries.
