• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

Phantasy Star Online 2 is F2P. Also on iOS/Android. PC -> Mobile -> Vita.

Awesome. Day freaking 1. Hope they announce a PS3 version too. All of my PSOEp1&2 friends on Xbox jumped to PSU on 360 then DCU on PS3.

People who plaid the Alpha outside of Japan? How was the lag?

I've tried the F2P PSU* and it was bad there as in you swung your attack hit the enemy and second later you see the damage appear as combat was done server-side and to and from Japan=time. I'm not sure many people bothered as I think the player base mainly migrated to PSP. Is PSO2 is like that I'll probably wait for a local "release".

*-If its not been mentioned I'll run down some of the limitations I recalled:
-No accessing player shops
-No trading with other players (you can trade with your characters)
-No My Room so no partner machine or item synthesis

As for people going "oh noes microtransactions". PSU is already littered with those.

So it being F2P, hopefully they make it playable and enjoyable without needing PSO gold or whatever. Also, I hope its worldwide or easy to visit other servers.

Gotta be honest, it was pretty unbearable at times.

However, it seemed like if you went to a less populated 'block' at a time of day when most Japanese players are asleep, you can play the game solo normally. Playing in a party with another western player never seemed to work out well for me.

Its usually listed as an MMO though. But I agree it is not a real MMO in the terms of WoW or anything.

If PSO gets listed as an MMO, Diablo should be as well.

In the first days of the alpha 2 the lag was this bad (I'm from Europe, Portugal btw):

The lag was mostly caused by a bug in the servers or something like that. In the later days of the alpha they applied a temporary fix, there were still occasional lag spikes, but it was alot better than the early days:

Problem is, the lag was pretty bad at times with alpha due to the large amount of users and Ship 1 constantly going down: Leading everyone to go to where most of the importers were: Ship 2.

Hopefully, this won't happen in the future. The lag was only pretty bad in the first test, second test it was smooth for me. This is mainly because the whole enemy physics is handled by the client instead of the server like Phantasy Star Universe.

I'm curious (and very serious about this question). Everyone harps on F2P games like Maple Story, Dungeon Fighter, Dragon Nest, etc. I'm not saying those games are amazing (nor am I saying any certain game is even good), but that's the general consensus I get from a large majority of gamers. Is the reason everyone is so "gung-ho" about this because it's PSO2 or because F2P is becoming a much more widely acceptable model?

I for one, will support the game as I did every edition of PSO. :) I'm just curious given the overwhelmingly positive reactions in this thread.

Really stoked about this being free to play. I can imagine that if it gets an English localization I would put many hours into it and even if it doesn't get an English localization I still might play it although not nearly to the same degree as a localized copy.

I imagine if a US release was underway and currently in translation, the release would probably be fall at the earliest and more likely to be late 2012/early 2013.

Honestly though, the game is extremely importer friendly when compared to PSU. My brother who has no knowledge of Japanese in the slightest managed to level two characters to 20 with us along with sorting out armor, equipping and sorting out the skill tree.

Haha it makes me fear we'll have a reenactment of PSUJP launch. XD

Since the game is coming out early Summer in Japan, would a U.S. release for Fall be possible?
Depends on how SEGA US will handle PSO2, english versions of PSU and the expansion AOTI were released only 2 months after the Japanese versions, while the Portable games were released between 7 to 11 months after Japan (with PSPo2 Infinity not being released at all).

After how SEGA US handled PSU, starting only with a 2 months delay in content updates when compared to the Japanese version to now being around 1 year and half behind, I'm worried about how they'll handle PSO2.

I imagine at launch there will be far more ship/servers open than two. I think that SEGA have learned from the terrible PSUJP launch and the PSO2 Alpha. Believe it or not, Alpha 2's launch was pretty smooth without any issues getting into the server.

People were expecting chaos, they got a game that had an extremely stable Alpha launch.

Hey, at least there was an extra month of playtime added!

...during which time there were like three missions to do with absolutely nothing added until a good six weeks after it launched

The first shots of the Vita version looked way worse, I'd say give them more development time before judging.

The vita version looks fine to me. We are obviously looking at different screens.

I'm talking about the initial batch of shots, which were ugly as hell. Sega's excuse was it was only 10% complete at that stage, a benefit of the doubt I think we should extend to the iOS version which isn't looking as stunning as it should be.

The VITA version has loads of dev time left. If they are planning a Spring 2013 launch for Japan, it has ages and ages to get more polish. I do agree that the initial shots did not look great but we have been a bit spoiled by all the lovely PC footage and shots. :D

You also missed the fact that there were tons of lag and server rollbacks. . . It was pretty hellish to say the least.

It won't hurt to try it out, but I'll only play until the point where the free equipment is no longer viable.

If it is based around PSO and having various lootdrops from monsters and bosses, things should be fine. Even if you have to purchase new weapons, they will be viable for ages.

Oh no, I was there. That launch was a total farce :( It pretty much killed my enthusiasm for the franchise to the point where I couldn't even bother with the PSP games, even though they actually did fix almost all of the really glaring issues I had with the game.

I'm surprised I'm giving PSO2 a chance, to be honest, but I can't say it doesn't look really, really good.

Man, if those vita shots are representative of the game at 10%, Sonic Team is obviously staffed by wizards.

I have a problem with PSO being F2P.

lobbies and games being filled with idiots, spammers and griefers

A paid game is automatically some sort of barrier to trouble makers so they will be serious about playing. Give them free PSO and it's not likely to assist building a good community unless you have private parties and pre-arranged friends.

If the demo for PSO Universe is still on XBL download and take a look at what barrier the average player is going to be met with.

I would rather pay to have a balanced game not restricted by IAPs.

I didn't know that F2P players automatically forced themselves into the parties I made or onto my friends list or made it a requirement to not put them on ignore for saying dumb things.

You just saved me some time bro.

That certainly can be an issue for F2P games, it just boils down to how SEGA empowers the Community to deal with issues. Ignoring spammers, reporting idiots and griefers etc, are also pretty easy to deal with if (a) SEGA provide the tools and (b) they act on the feedback quickly.

Nothing annoys me more than see those Zeny sellers or bots sitting there spamming over and over.

All ready for the Vita version, but I don't like it being download only.

Vita memory card space is precious as it is.

If the game is brought over to the west with the developers' intent of having the game on one global server and it's free to play, you can bet on hell that the game is handled extremely well online.

Believe it or not, Sega of Japan handle the Japanese PSU servers extremely well. There's barely any issues compared to the western counterpart, this includes the game being free to play and having a moderate amount of western players.

I have never - never ever ever - played a subscription-based game that had a better community than the average free-to-play game. I think the whole idea that something as inconsequential as a $10-15/month paywall will substantially improve the quality of the player base is a bit of cognitive dissonance.

I think it'd be smart for the Vita version to have a retail release as well (memory reasons), and then you get like 40 dollars for the cash shop when you register your game or something like that.
