Phantasy Star Online 2 PSV screenshots

Looks great when you consider that it is a portable game and that the developers mentioned that it is only 10% complete and that they will definitely optimize the game to look much better closer to release.

PSO on DC had a fee. PSU had a fee.

I'm expecting this will have a fee and I hope it's minimal.

Probably something like the old hunting license. I think it was like $7.

Although, PSO always had all the goofy in-game promotions. They could do it F2P if they really wanted to and put in the Pizza Hut box shields and all that.

Looks worse than monster hunter on 3ds... Hopefully they polish it a bit. Will probably stick with PC version

I played PSO and PSO V2 about a billion hours so I'm looking forward to this.

Still looks meh and I guess it will depend on how the online is, but one of the titles that makes me want a Vita.

Wait, the Vita version won't have offline/local play either?

Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of it?

I don't know if it does, but it isn't an MMO. Unless you consider Diablo an MMO.

Sorry I've never played PS, except one time when my friends brought it over to my house 8 years ago or so.
If this has a fee there's no way I'll buy this.

Yes, PSO is the only game coming to the Vita between now and 2013, this will probably get canned and moved to 3DS as well.

it's going to have a fee, see ya!

Couple points I'm happy about when also reading the article...

1. They reassured the PC version will be released 2012 (I was under the impression it was 2013 for both, thankfully that's not the case.)

2. They also advised that beta is the next phase... not another phase of alpha! :D

I just quoted this, and it was already edited. I think its usually less about platform, more about the game; if, say, Tribes Ascend made it to a console, I don't think there's any reason to shoehorn an offline mode into there. Portables are a different beast, though. Buying a game that tethers you to wifi is kind of a bizarre proposition, especially when much of the success for the portable Phantasy Stars has been local play. Some form of that really should be in there.

I would agree this should have offline content, but its a PC game first, Vita game second

This would be a great way to pay for the game. I'd be all about buying reasonably priced clothing items for my avatar.

Red Vines whips! Brought to you by Red Vines Licorice!

When comparing other Vita game screenshots to how they actually look while you play them, you realize there's a huge discrepancy.

Taking that discrepancy into account, this could look quite nice in motion.

Heck if it looks like these early screens and runs at 60FPS I'd be all over it

2013 redeemed indeed, those look pretty bad. The framerate was ASS in the videos too, thats how you can tell this is extremely early though.

With visuals that bad, and the framerate was still dipping into the teens? Yeaa...... its safe to say this footage was REAL early.

Nice that you can access items using the touch it looks like. Having to access them in PSP2 with O on top of moving the camera was like a pain. Literally a pain.

Were those three portable titles (PSP, PSP2, PSZero) any good when compared to PSO proper (Blue Burst, etc.)? Or do they simply pale in comparison? Can anyone who has actually played them confirm one way or the other?

No offline mode? What?

So it's effectively useless unless you're sat in a Wi-Fi hotspot. That can't be right.

Phantasy Star Portable 2 is great, Phantasy Zero was good, but disappointing in a lot of ways, and I only played the demo of PSP but it felt off. Get PSP2 definitely.

its a pc game

I know.

But no offline would kill the appeal of the PSP PSO's, and the Monster Hunter shaped hole in the Vita's line-up. As it's so far away it would be bonkers to not have offline/local play.

Can live without it in PC/console versions, even though I really liked playing PSO offline sometimes.

I only played Phantasy Star 0, but it was decent.
The only problems with it were its small scope (given the hardware) and the art style (too generic).

f2p please, that would be awesome.

I'd expect PSO2 to be f2p. They would make a lot more from micro transactions for items and weapons, especially with all the customisation and novelty items that PSO thrives on.

Then again it's Sega, so you never know if they'll do the common-sense thing.

What's bazaar is that this still hasn't been announced for a console. Only logical explaination is that either MS or Sony have acquired exclusivity for their unannounced console and are planning on announcing it during the unveiling extravaganza.

Or it's Vita only.

Or it's Vita only.

The Vita announcement seems literally plucked out of the air under pressure from Sony, I doubt it's the last one.

I'm expecting console announcements and Western release confirmed at E3, it is a big game for Sega and online games live or die by the userbase. They've messed up PSO so many times, you have to think they've learnt by now as PSO2 seems to be putting it all right.

No offline play? I always liked the offline play in PSO because I could play even if my internet or the servers were down.

People need to quit dismissing games without knowing the whole picture.

Sakai said that since the vita version is far from complete, it's running on the lowest possible settings that the PC version runs at currently. He promised to make it close to the highest settings on PC once they have it optimized for the vita.

That said, this game already looks better than Phantasy Star Portable 2.

After playing PSP1 and 2, I can never go back to Blue Burst. Blue Burst is supremely dated (which is understandable), and the Portable series was a breath of fresh air, ESPECIALLY with the combat. There were some complaints that guns required MP/TP/whatever in order to be fired, though. Another one was people complaining about leveling up Techs, which I didn't have a problem with personally. I can understand how frustrating it would be for Forces, though.

A nice compromise would've been to keep the leveling mechanic for Hunters/Rangers (since you're going to be using them so often anyways), but give the discs to Forces.

I mean, they can improve the IQ, but I'm not holding my breath for better textures and assets lol.

I'll still be there day 1 if it ends up being good though.

Agreed, though I can see their point... some have been let down by false statements where developers have said "This isn't the final product" etc... but it was. Crysis 2 for example, I was let down (PC version).

That said, I've played the alpha & I'm more than happy... it'd be awesome if they also included older areas from Ep 1 & 2 as well. :D

<3 Jinfash, but no.

According to a translation of the game director's comments during the "conference":

"Although it may look so low-res currently, keep in mind that the PSVita version is less than 10% complete. The 3D models, shadows, and shaders are at the lowest setting. These will be improved upon once the game is optimized so it can look close in comparison to the PC version.

The PSVita version share the same server, the same data, and the same characters. Therefore the game saves are stored online and it shall be an online only game."

Sega's already destroyed all competition on Vita visually, with launch or near-launch software all running at 60fps in native resolution like VT and Monkey Ball. It'd be shocking if this game launches in 2013 looking anything like it does now.

Or it's Vita only.

You could be right, they may have no faith in the series success in the West. Vita would make a certain amount of sense in that case, and it would explain the lack of a console/western announcement and continued focus on JP exclusive testing/feedback (I would think FF14 had taught everyone a lesson on the importance of multinational alpha/beta feedback, but apparently not). IIRC the DC versions performed well outside Japan, but I'm guessing the GC/Xbox didn't set the charts on fire (as they were really just expansion packs/re-releases and had small user bases at the time). Universe of course sucked and probably sold accordingly. The portable titles were portable titles in the west--seems a safe bet they bombed. Would be a shame if this was their outlook, cause it's fairly obvious why the series performance may have been lacking.

More PSO is awesome. I think it will do better in Japan than in the EU or US. Japan has the infrastructure and player mindset right for a game like this.

E3 should be interesting. Hopefully getting more info for the PC version in the EU and US.
