Phantasy Star Portable 2 is coming...

please have new content and not be a rehash of PSU 1 just with different people this time ..

I just hope PSP2 goes against the established PSU and PSP standards and is as unique and different as possible. I'd prefer less filler content (4 cities, a shop for each type of item, field lobbies, etc.) and meatier missions, enemies and bosses ala PSO.

NO. NO THAT IS NOT WHAT THEY TOLD YOU. "Story" Mode shouldn't even exist. Thats what made PSO so fantastic with it's atmospheric story not shitacular anime cutscenes and talking heads. Aaaaaaaaaaah!

This however is great news, even though Adhoc Party made it easy for me anyway.

OMG INFRATRSUCST....ahem...finally.

That being said, looks like i'll have enough time to be my PS0 fix and then move over the PSP2.

EDIT: No boss reskins please.

I am cautiously optimistic; I loved the first PSP. However, if they do bring the game over is there a chance that they might strip online infrastructure? =(

Maybe, but I doubt even SoA would have the balls to do something stupid like that.

Well, Sega removed all of the DLC code from the US version of the original PS:P game. This wouldn't be any different. If Phantasy Star Zero still has it's online mode intact when it hits US retailers this Fall then we shouldn't have anything to worry about though.

One of the things I like about PSU compared to PSO is that it seems to have more of a spiritual link with the original games, something which was sorely lacking in PSO. The Gurhal system is effectively a reenvisioning of the Algol system, and that's largely thanks to having three different planets with distinctly different architectural styles and climates. Moving away from that really wouldn't be cool in my book. More enemies and bosses are always welcome, though.

Looking at the screens, PSP2 is starting to feel more of an amalgamation of Phantasy Star Universe and Phantasy Star Online.

This is a GOOD thing.

Well, you can get the DLC weapons in PS:P, can't you?

In any case, infrastructure is nice but if Sega shuts down those servers a year or two later (I'm sure they will, like they're doing Chromehounds), is ad-hoc in for Sony's Ad-Hoc Party tunneling?

Oh hey, the chain thing from Phantasy Star Zero is there. PP has been moved over near health too. Perhaps it's no longer per weapon? I like the new interface colours, and the emegency dodge/shield gameplay additions sound sweet too.

You don't know what a Serafi-Senba is? Fair enough... if you aren't spamming White Beast more power to you, it is one of the MAJOR problems I have with PSU. They should rename it White Beast Universe. Releasing items in waves creates Hot Spots... and if you follow the Japanese releases you know when to sell an item that is about to drop every other run. I liked AoI at release because there was an abundance of new stuff... not a new weapon or 3.
man what is your hang up with white beast

I can confirm two things:

1: Phantasy Star Zero will have online mode, and it will be free.

2: Online play will be completely region free. If you're using a JP version and I'm using my US copy, we can play together fully without restriction. In addition, if you had a really awesome weapon or item you wanted to trade me, it will automatically translate it into my language when you show it to me.

Cheers!

Welcome to NeoGAF, RubyEclipse. Now PSO World won't be the only place that gets all the attention. ;)

Okay, I see we're up to speed over here. I haven't seen this thread on the first page of Gaming for a days and a couple things were being posted and deciphered over at PSO World. So far so good. Like previously mentioned by Hcoregamer00, PSP2 certainly seems like more of an amalgamation of PSO and PSU than PSP was and I can't fault Sega for it. In my opinion, it looks like Sega, and not just community reps, is finally listening to fans.

Some of the speculation I've read thus far states that there may possibly be just one hub world/lobby with shops, a mission counter and space to sit around and chat. Sounds like Pioneer 2 to me. I couldn't be happier. Oh and Evil Sharks! :D

Do want, so greatly!

As someone who finally got his PSP to connect to the internet after 4 years of stupidity this excites me greatly, despite my pessimism towards modern Phantasy Stars.

It's the game's opening movie and it recaps the events in PSU so it may contain spoilers. Fast forward to 1:12 for the actual PSP2 opening (with new theme song).

Fansites have been translating the official JP site and there's some new info making the rounds.

-Humans and Newmans get a new racial ability known as Mirage Blast at Level 20.

-Also, the shield can be used to guard by pressing the R button and guarding at a specific moment when attacked results in a "Just Guard" which results in the player character receiving no damage and doesn't use in Photon Points.

ss_02.jpg

"Just Guard" in action.

-And there are no Photon Charges in the game. PP regenerates naturally and also when the player uses normal attacks. It's been said that Sega doesn't want players to continuously spam Photon Arts like they do in PSU and PSP.

-Phantasy Star Portable 2 will feature brand new original areas as well as others from the previous games.

ss_02.jpg

New area: Seabed Relics

ss_07.jpg

Old areas/missions will be slightly different. Mission length and enemy spawns will change. Like this Goldova appearing before Raffon Meadows's De Ragan fight.

ss_06.jpg

And this new enemy in a Neudaiz mission.

My response: Holy shit, this is pretty much Phantasy Star Universe 2 with some Phantasy Star Zero mixed in for good measure. :D

Ohhh that trailer was awesome. Glad to see the Love (Pretty) baton is coming back, it's just so fun to smack things and have hearts pour out of it. :D

The fact that this game will have infrastructure mode alone makes it a must-buy. What are the chances that it will be multi-region like Phantasy Star Zero was recently announced to be? Are there any other multi-region online PSP games?

I really wish the PSP wasn't THREE TIMES it's actual price down here. I'd buy one for PSP2 alone if I could.
Import the system and the games (This and MHFU)

I still think stuff like that should go into the PS0 thread, and not a random PSP2 thread.
Agreed

150 + 50 shipping + 60% taxes on top of the price of the goods + shipping (so, 60% taxes on 200 usd).

Grand total of 320 usd for one game.

Plus the game and shipping of said game and taxes of said game....

...not the point of this thread tho! I'm loving the fact that PSU is finally going back to PSO form. I really hope this does well.

Infrastructure is confirmed for PSP2. I guess no one reported on it, because no one cares. :lol
It was reported. The issue is that people on GAF have a bad habit of only reading the last page of a thread and sometimes just the last three posts or so before posting themselves.

Ooh. Good to know.

Would be nice if the game had a PSO style "mysterious" soundtrack.
Yeah, I didn't mind the music in that game yet find the vocal songs in PSU/PSP (and the one song in that PSP2 trailer) horrible.

A musical return to PSO would be a good thing, IMO

All of Sega's current Phantasy Star games emulate anime as much as possible. With that said, don't get your hopes up. I preferred PSO's music as well so :(

Oh yesss, if there is a proper 3d Hub to get to missions instead of just menu's, that'll be my biggest problem with PSPortable 1 dealt with. It felt really lame just going through menu's to meet-up.

Really? Really?! It sped the game up mucho faster than wandering a huge hub in PSU. :| I guess if they "downscaled" it for infrastructure to fit about 16 players per lobby (or something... 32 players?) to where it's functional/wanderable like the hubs in PSU but doesn't take five minutes to get to places I wouldn't bitch so much for a portable title to nix bullshit like that.

Hubs were pretty important for ye olde PSO. You could drop items, trade, and actually SEE what mission your team is going on without having to type into a chat window "oh I am on Planet ____ doing Mission ____" before you could even co-op. Plus it makes the whole experience feel more cohesive rather than shitty menu cop-out screens.

It works fine in Monster Hunter, and will work fine here. All they need to do next is cut the entire anime story bullshit singleplayer from the game and all the talking head cutscenes and we're almost back to the good stuff!
