Phil Harrison reiterates: "Xbox One is Kinect"; a magical experience

The voice commands will work, which to me is the best feature. Depending on how small your room is you probably wouldn't be able to play games like Kinect Sports though. It does support smaller spaces than Kinect 1.
That's what I used Kinect for on my 360, it's just that the camera would constantly have a cursor fly across the screen at random in the dashboard or when using apps. I have like 3 or 4 feet between the Kinect and the couch. All I really want is to use the Kinect for is to through menus, but even then it seems those expectations are too high.

In my case I'm going to have to pay $100 more for accessory that won't work in my surroundings. It makes more sense for me to get a PS4 but I like MS's offerings...

I love how everything is like "magic" for MS. Their awesome Online-DRM with library access everywhere, The Cloud, "You can use Kinect for "magical" voice chat.", their magical publishing policies with slot reservations. Except when people realize the magical consequences and bitch about them, all magic is gone and MS doesn't care anymore, grasping for every straw that gives them magical preorder numbers. :-)

I'm having a hard time not seeing how Kinect is not a gimmick. Voice control has been done before and failed (Google TV for one). They have yet to show any reason to own it for the camera other than profile switching where cool, not worth $100 and having an obtrusive camera on for.

Don't think about it. It's magic!

Its-magic....gif

Put a SKU out there without Kinect or I will never buy an Xbone 180.

Then I hope you never buy one. Calling it "Xbone 180" pretty much shows you wouldn't buy one anyway, so please stop calling for the dismantling of the system I want.

If they want to throw the Kinect in there fine, but they really need to drop the price of the console because I'm not willing to spend 100$ more for your system because you decided to throw in a camera, that if I buy your system I'm never going to use. Drop the price or drop the Kinect and I will be on board. That Kinect will never see the light of day in my house. The thing will stay in the box until the end of time. Sorry Microsoft your vision for gaming is no where near mine with this fucking Kinect nonsense.

I would say the $100 is justified with a superior camera tech and in my opinion superior user interface that can control your entire hometheater av equipment and tv in a cool futuristic way. Folks are really sleeping of that snap feature that lets you run two things side by side. PS4 is cool if you play games on a tv in your bedroom and games is all you need, but if you have a nice hometheater setup in your living room the XB1 is a better addition.

Actually I was a day one buyer of the 360 and waited in line over night to get one. I didn't even buy a PS3 till 3 years after launch and almost always buy multiplatform games on 360. I am far from a Sony fanboy. I just refuse to have stuff such as Kinect forced on the gamers.

I don't think I'll use Kinect much for games, but voice commanding the thing to turn on and load up a video or something is a nice idea. Currently it's a hassle to set up a video to watch while sorting dinner, even finding and doing the controller feels hassle at that time.

Profile swapping / logging in will be nice if works as advertised, especially with my partner and two identical controls on the sofa.

You know what's faster than saying xbox one on?
Pushing a button.

And I don't need a machine to recognize me, it's all about ads anyway, I don't want to have an "experience" with my mahchine, I want to play.

Do you know whats faster than pushing a button? Saying "Xbox On" as you walk to your controller and having it ready to go by the time you grab it.

Anyone asking about the sensor bar for Wii please stop asking about that. Seriously its embarassing. The sensor was needed for the primary use of the system. Kinect is not mandatory on like 99% of the games out there or being released on the Xbone.

you cant compare them at all. the sensor bar is for the wiimote.

Ok. Did people complain when the Wii was announced to have the Wiimote in the box. Just because it's in the control it's still tech you're paying for that might not work, didn't even have to use.

The only difference here is that Kinect is something that can be unplugged.

If Microsoft remove it from the box, then they're back to having an accessory that people may or may not buy and a bunch of publishers unsure to fund kinect games.

I didn't buy a Kinect for 360 because it was expensive, I enjoyed Dance Central but couldn't justify paying £150 for it (Kienct was £120 and game was £30). Now I won't have that problem, if a good Kinect game comes along, I get it at no additional cost.

As far as I'm concerned, the Kinect is part of the XBO, it's just unfortunate it's a part that can be unplugged giving people the impression it's thrown in.

Like with any other magic, I'll believe it when I see it. So far it just looks like a bunch of UI and gameplay gimmicks.

I hope they stick to their guns on this. I would have zero interest in a XB1 without Kinect

During the initial reveal of Xbox One and the following hoopla with all it's DRM policies, I wanted very much for those policies (including Kinect's mandatory inclusion) to not be there because I wanted to purchase the Xbox. It felt like Microsoft became very hostile toward gamers with the Xbox One.

I like the Halo games; my Xbox 360 sees far more action than my Playstation 3; Live was the better service to PSN for me; my family and friends are predominantly on Xbox. But after what's happened I don't feel I can trust Microsoft not to screw me over once the storm has passed and an Xbox One has made it's way into my living room. I no longer wish to own one and so am in agreement with you. I hope Microsoft keeps to their guns and, in fact, returns to their original vision of what the Xbox One was all about: always online, pure digital, mandatory-always-on Kinect.

Nothing would bring me more joy from them at this point.

Edit: Also, it's got memory and chips? Is that really something that needs to be said?

It should be a peripheral, that is what it is afterall. Why should someone not have he choice to get a sku without it?

As much as I want them to I don't think they're going to back down on this thing. They've told too many lies about it to go back now. And they're probably victims of the sunk cost fallacy at this point.

Fuck it, I'll drink the Kool-aid for now. It better be as amazing as you say MS or that stupid thing will get shoved in a tuperware bin with all my other peripherals I don't use any more faster than you can say "Xbox, TV."

You totally can compare them. Both are sensing devices used to enhance gameplay in ways that no one particularly asked for.

The Wii Sensorbar costs like one buck to make and a pint of beer to pay the designing engineer. Literally.

Albeit all the haters for the Kinect the example he presents may really resonate with a huge part of the mainstream consumer base.

Imagine coming home from work/school, tired as heck, walking into your entertainment room while telling the One to turn on, grab your controller... Wait. You could have just sat down and pressed the controller instead.

Yeah it's a gimmick.

The major difference is you can go out and buy a Kinect if you want, I can't return mine for 100 dollars if I never wanted it.

Played loads of Wii games without using the sensor.

the sensor bar cost them like zero cents to manufacture and cost the consumer about the same to buy, it was trivial

no one would complain if the xbone just had a high quality microphone built into the system or was attached for all that voice command stuff that microsoft loves and added no cost (or honestly, physical space) to the package

having a big state of the art camera bundled with a gaming console is mega dumb when there has been zero uses found for it so far, its literally dead weight

If the Wii cost $500 and had no games that really justified the inclusion or expense of the sensor bar, I'm pretty sure people would have complained about it.

Why can't you buy the Kinect version while the rest of us buy the non-Kinect version?
