Phil Spencer named Head of Xbox

Man,this is great news actually. Seemed like a real likable guy and has been saying all the right things lately. Now we just need some cool Phil Spencer gifs. Lol

They gotta get Yusuf Mehdi out of there. All throughout the Xbox One reveal and launch the guy has come across as the most out of touch suit at Microsoft.

Agreed.

I don't know why everyone is championing this choice. MS is thought by most to have the worst first party stable of the big 3, and Phil Spencer was in charge of them. Sure, he talks to you on twitter, but look at his past work to see if you really want him in charge of everything.

More Midtown Madness.
yes please.

Phil Spencer is one of the most genuinely down to earth guys in the games business. He gets it. I think this is the best decision MS has made for xbox in a long time.

Sure but we don't know how much of that was an edict handed down from Don at the top. MS's non-Kinect first-party output ran dry when he came into power.

This guy was really deceptive during the PS4 vs Xbox One spec wars saga. He seems like a sleazy salesman type of guy to me.

Don't know what to think

I like how Phil has been the only positive to come out since the 180 fiasco. Hopefully his gamer sensibilities will carry over and make the bone a more competitive platform.

We have Nadella to thank for that. Back when Nadella was appointed CEO, Phil was quick to come out and say that he was a huge supporter of Xbox and Microsoft Studios. I guess that was just proven to be true with his decision to put Phil in charge.

Lets wait and see how true his colours really are and as said in the press release, Xbox still bows to Windows which were most of the problems came from in the first place. Fingers crossed he can do his own thing to some effect that is great for gamers.

More games and Midtown Madness, Crimson Skies please Phil, thanks.

I personally think all the best stuff came from Windows and server&tools divisions

The services /devices made stuff so weird because of how everything there is in flux

Bing, MSN Messenger, Zune (worked but with huge growing pains) and now Skype

Who was in charge before him?

Mattrick and then after, technically, Terry Myerson (OS) and Julie Larson-Green (hardware), though they weren't exclusive to the Xbox branch as Mattrick was and Spencer will be.

So Spencer basically sits between the different teams inside the Xbox branch and Myerson and Elop (who replaces Larson-Green).

Also, yay! Spencer is among the more likeable dudes at Xbox and Microsoft in general.

What did he say? Was it reasonable levels of deflection (reasonable because what else would MS do?) or was it Albert Penello style bullshit?

who else would you want in that position then?

Phil didn't become the head of MGS until September 2009.

I like this guy a lot. Seems genuine, and he seems like a real gamer. Not only that, but from the interviews I've read, he knows what gamers want. Good luck man.

If your reading this, only one bit of advice. Less timed/bought exclusives, more focus on first parties and just making Xbox a great platform for games to be on. Be friendly and communicate with gamers and developers, be open, and be adaptive. That by itself will help you sell consoles.

As good as that is, he will have always been strapped with how much money/time/resources that his BOSSES were allocating to him. Now he is the boss, he can make the decisions. He's better than any other replacement I can think of, and certainly better than Elop who was supposedly going to be taking charge of Xbox.

You do realize that Sony has the same clause? At least for PS3 it was either release at the same time or release with additional content.

I think many indies would prefer Sony's solution to how MS is handling it. At least I know if I was a game developer with limited resources I would rather focus on one platform then with the extra time create a little bit of extra content for the next platform. Its not like Sony requires tons of extra stuff. A lot of times its content that already existed as DLC. Warframe is a perfect example. What did that game get as extra content? A few weapon skins. I think its a smart move that can benefit both Sony and the makers of the game.
A full parity clause is bar far worse and usually amounts to longer initial development time, delays on on platform if they are already far into the development process , or one platform not receiving the game at all.

Still no promotion for Larry? :(

It is kind of difficult to blame somebody not knowing budgets and whatnot, but that output seems worse than pre-2009.

I bet in some board meeting most of the suits were saying stuff like ''why are getting so much hate, the iphone is always online, our box has kinect 2 so the price is good blah blah blah''

and then Phil stand up and tells them how it is, saying things like this.

  • The hardcore will abandon us unless we make it perfectly clear that GAMES are a massive focus
  • The loyal consumer is wise and they saw less value in our original strategy, we cannot screw with our loyal fan base.
  • If we want to achieve mass market adoption with this generation the price needs to be right, the initial audience might not want kinect and the more expanded audience dont want it at the price we are proposing, we need to find a balance, we need to excel in these areas, AAA exclusives, new IP's, value for money (including xbox live), amazing new mainstream experiences, excellent value.
  • When I say we need to ''excel'' we need to make customers say ''i cant believe they are doing this, buying a xbox one is a no brainier''
Anything less will result in exceeding the xbox 360's install base being a pipe dream
