Phil Spencer responds to latest leaks

Out of interest, who would you like to see as the next head of Xbox?

I was thinking Todd Howard but I also feel like he's shaping up to be a bit of a snake oil salesman.
I was thinking Bobby Kotick (if the acquisition goes through) but then we'll end up with microtransactions in everything.

You know what... maybe they should acquire Nintendo and then make Miyamoto head of Xbox.

I don't have a name. I also don't need businessman trying to be cool and pander to his audience. The fact that so many people fall for Phil's ruse is sad. Not everyone can be an Iwata or Yosp and that's okay.

I wonder how many folks on this forum work in upper management of their companies ... I think it's embarassing of course for this stuff to have leaked but I don't think the conversation is that unusual given the roles of the people and size of company involved ... I would actually expect them to be talking about stuff like this. I'm sure this kind of conversation would be par for the course for someone like Bezos and surely for Steve Jobs back in the day. BTW this sort of thing is why companies like to settle stuff out of court ... discovery is a bitch. I will say that Phil and/or the people around him seem to step in it quite often. How did this stuff get out? Even if he's not directly causing it, these sort of controversies are following him around and so to some extent that must speak to his leadership or his style.
They know this is par for the course, the fanboys are just using it as an excuse to air their pussies with faux outrage.

What the hell is he supposed to say?

No, I'm genuinely asking. How does someone dig themselves out of this hole? I'm the communications director for my company, and I have no freaking idea where I'd start with this shitshow. 😐

Then he can talk a lot less and let his actions speak for him. Start living up to the comments he's made in public.

I think it's commonplace to try to put creatives in charge of the business, but most often that doesn't work. There's a reason why Miyamoto has stuck to making games.

If Bobby Kotick was made head of Xbox, you'd have a mass exodus.

The problem for Xbox is that they need an entire leadership change, changing the figure head would just be like rearranging deck chairs on the titanic.

Man.....can you just imagine the clash in cultures between Nintendo and Microsoft? That would be an unmitigated disaster.

Put Bobby Kotick in charge. At least he doesn't to pretend to be some good guy trying to save gaming. He is there to make money for his company.

There really isn't the right thing to say and his reply is as good as any, these sort of leaks rarley happen, especially on this scale. They did, however get something out of it and that's the feedback on some of the products they plan on releasing. I know they probably have already made some changes as a lot of the documents are a bit dated, but hopefully they'll use the feedback to make more precise adjustment to what the player base wants.

I still don't get why
ms isn't already in court suing for 100 billion over this......

To be fair, based on the content of his emails, it appears Phil really does believe about 85% of what he's peddling. How he can go into E3 eight years in a row believing they have the best line up ever is another discussion, but it appears he actually does believe it.

I'll admit I haven't looked closely but I assumed the info came from the ftc?
But guessing by your response it's from elsewhere?
MS screwed up the upload, and uploaded the non-redacted versions to the FTC website. They did this to themselves.

Ah....ok. Yeah, it was revealed that the leak was actually caused by Microsoft. Judge Corley and the FTC PR Director confirmed that is what happened.

Ah I see, well somebody and thier boss and thier boss and thier boss is getting fired.

Outside of gaming forurms, I don't think anyone is noticing or caring. Media is reporting on leaks in general as positives and news items. Phil's little statemet may be enough for the uniformed casual audience. it's possible nothing happens to him. Better the devil you know? Phil is the face of xbox, it's a difficult change to make and they seem to be spinning things enough to squash the negative pr. Most would agree it's time for Phil and Booty to leave, but Microsoft seems sold on the direction.

Maybe they can hire Colt? sorry, promote Colt?

Is it possible, Mircrosoft wanted all this information out there?

Suddenly Canadian hero Don Matrick wasn't so bad!

Eh. There is a lot of horseshit like Phil telling the courts the future of TES hasn't been decided (case by case basis) and he/Activision in lockstep saying this acquisition opens the portfolio up to more gamers when in reality he's doing it to harm the competition, not that there is anything wrong with that but own it. We know damned well that if it wasn't from regulatory scrutiny throughout, the end of COD on Playstation would be coming far sooner than this 10 year agreement and that's not factoring in the plethora of other IP involved in the sale. Then look at Phil's sentiment around acquiring Nintendo and considering an acquisition a career moment instead of building something. He's just like any other bigwig at Microsoft except he favors jeans and a t-shirt to a suit in the most J Allard of moves.

Sure, but nothing you've said here contradicts my post. Phil Spencer seems to believe a lot of what he says.

If you want to put aside the public versus private contradictions and say he believes in a lot of the horseshit he bloviates, I'm not sure that paints in a better light at all.

Yes, he did.

How sad is it that your career defining moment is using the massive megacorp piggy bank to buy a wholly independent and successful company that has no need for your involvement, and where there's a clear case history of MS acquisitions leading to absolutely awful long term results for the acquired companies?

Why can't his career defining moment be to make Xbox a good platform with it's own great titles organically, like what MS and Sony do?

It's just pathetic. Your career defining moment shouldn't be a bailout. It should represent stamping your own mark on the industry that people can cheer about and be happy that you exist in a competitive environment. MS doesn't represent that at all.

Success is earned; it is not purchased.

At Microsoft earning, purchasing are the same thing. That's just part of their DNA. I'm talking about a culture established decades ago with Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer. Doesn't seem like things are really all that different today.

My hopes were on a 2026 launch, personally. Hopefully that's the shift they are going to make.
Im sorry but 6 years a gen whereby 16 months out of those 6 years they had shit all to show is fucking pathetic. Stick with the series until 2028, they made their bed.
Lie in it. For the players.

I tell you something. Whatever you think about this guy, and I know he puts himself in the spotlight more than any other gaming exec, apart from maybe reggie in his prime....this guy takes a beating and just keeps coming back....he's like the strongest case of piles I've ever seen.

And I kinda think he seems like an alright guy just trying to get through another day of work like the rest of us, so I can understand why he gets so much shit from those that don't like him lol.
ahahahhahahahahahhaha

Heard joke once: Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says life seems harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain.

Doctor says, 'Treatment is simple. Great head of xbox clown Philgliacci is in town tonight. Go and see him. That should pick you up.'

Man bursts into tears. Says, 'But doctor…I am Philgliacci.'

Good joke. Everybody laugh. Roll on snare drum. Curtains."

OK now that we have the usual suspects (we know who they are) coming out, giving Phil a virtual hug and (for some unknown reason) trying to put a positive spin on what is arguably the biggest gaming leak ever, it's pretty much settled that some unconditional Xbox fans are waaaaaay more loopy than their team blue counterparts.

If the same thing happened to Sony/Playstation, the Sony fans wouldn't be here saying "It's OK, Jim. Shit happens... have a sandwich on me". They would be like:

I say that with confidence since while I probably lean more toward Sony in terms of a brand I have confidence in, you can find me in all the Sony meltdown (usually post-state of play) threads shitting all over Playstation.

Seriously are you folks getting paid or something?
Im a PlayStation fanboy yet 90% of my posts are shitting on Sony and Jim Ryan for their ridiculous secrecy and abysmal future gameplan (GAAS shit). Anyone defending these Xbox leaks are simply a lost cause.

If these were Sony leaks, and this is what they contained, I'd be ripping them a new one. Non stop

And he said Microsoft is playing the "long game" in their plans of acquiring Nintendo.
Isn't Nintendo one of those protected Japanese companies that a foreign company can not buy?

They are shitting bricks trying to get Activision. The Japanese government will probably give them the finger as soon as they say "we are interested in buying Ni..."

Somewhere, Dave Haynie is rolling his eyes deeper into the backs of their sockets than he usually is.

Weird leakage, considering most of MS internal documentation is classified and labeled with IRM and DLP policies and engines this is weird the lesst

Yeah surely that's the real meaning of a "fan". People trying to sugarcoat these Xbox leaks are acting more like Scientology church lawyers trying to shut down/deflect any and all criticism of Tom Cruise lol.

I think recognizing and obtaining talent is key for these big companies, whether it's small or large scale.

Just look at Sony, where exactly would they be now if they hadn't purchased Insomniac and Naughty Dog and Guerilla games? Did Sony earn that? I'm mean we're talking no horizon, ratchet, or last of us, or spiderman here.

Probably try to defend that by saying it was years ago, but the fact is they went out and actively bought talent.
