When Scorpio launches, PS4 and X1S will probably be around $200 with a pack-in game or two, and the PS4 Pro will likely be $300. It's nothing to drop your mic about if the Scorpio comes in at $400. It's still a premium product that's significantly more expensive than alternatives.
But at E3 they'll surely act like $400 is a mic drop moment, and that's fine.
Really?... what does the PS4pro have that the Scorpio does not? NOTHING... it has a
- UHD drive.
- 4GB extra ram (on a 384 bit bus)
- Vapour chamber cooler (and they can not "cheap out on it"... because it cools everything, and Microsoft can not have a RROD...)
- And 8 more Shader units (36 vs 44 )(ok 40 in the production unit)
(BTW, these numbers are guesses, but the numbers are non-zero)
So the uhd drives has to be an extra 10 dollars,
the ram an extra 10 dollars,
the vapour chamber an extra 20 dollars
and the modifications to the cpu are at least an extra 10 dollars...
so around 50 dollars more than the ps4pro.
If sony is breaking even on the ps4pro (and without a pack-in game), then Microsoft has to charge more... does microsoft plan to pack-in a game with the Scorpio?... if it does, then it is more expensive than a ps4pro.
And if microsoft is planning to lose money on the Scorpio, then they have to have a plan on how to get that money back on games sales...
Richard Leadbetter wrote in his Project Scorpio reveal that: "PS4 Pro launched at £349/$399. Scorpio has a larger processor (the most expensive single part of any console), 4GB more memory, a faster hard drive, a UHD Blu-ray drive and a state-of-the-art cooling solution. All of these add cumulatively to the bill of materials and if I had to guess - and I'll stress that this isn't based on anything I might have heard on my visit - Project Scorpio is going to cost in the region of $499."

Why do so many people seem convinced that Digital Foundry is wrong?
I assume Digital Foundry knows a fair amount about console hardware, so if it ends up being $399 that would mean that they either: (1.) Were wrong, or (2.) Were paid by Microsoft to make people believe the price would be $100 higher to make the $399 price seem like a better deal.
The second option is a bit too "tin-foil hat" for me, and so as someone with no knowledge of hardware costs, it seems safest to go with the best guess of a guy who makes a living writing about console hardware.
It's obviously possible that Digital Foundry is wrong, and it ends up being $399, but the evidence for that doesn't seem to be much stronger than the evidence pointing toward $499.
What I hope 399
What I expect 499
I fully expect $499. $449 if they are willing to just hit break even with zero profit off of the box

Shouldn't we be able to somewhat reverse engineer the Scorpio specs and properly guesstimate a realistic price point without just throwing around random numbers?
My PC was only $700 a year or so ago and has a CPU that destroys Scorpio and a comparable GPU (980ti/i7 6700k)...Sounds like 499 or even more because of the emphasis on "premium product" and the comparison with a 2000$ PC.
I get the expectations, but where does the talk of how much they'll profit come from? Has anyone done a parts breakdown yet to actually estimate the cost?

I mean Pro is $399 and I don't anticipate Sony make a ton of profit strictly off that box. Scorpio has a more expensive GPU, 4 more GB of RAM, a 4k Blu-ray player, and I suspect a more premium / higher cost chassis as well.
I think the $399 expectations are slightly unrealistic but who knows, maybe they really will come in at that price
My question is if it's $499, does anyone think it'll do big numbers? Regardless of specs/quality/experience.
Pro was 399 a year ago. By the time scorpio is here, they could drop it to at least 349. Though I'm starting to think they won't bother. May as well leave it "premium".
It's not going to do big numbers even at $399. There is the S it has to compete with. This is a targeted product, I don't think MS is expecting huge numbers.

I actually think people are underestimating it. I think the demand is huge and it'll do better sales then expected.
To me, as a day one supporter I was sold a more expensive product that was weaker than the competitor by a good amount. I feel regardless of how much more powerful it is than the PS4 Pro, or the original xbox one, that they need to make it up to the hardcore with this box. That's who they are selling this to. The power delta seems to be about the same as the PS4-xbox one power gap percentage (TF wise at least). Sony was able to deliver that for less money at PS4. Selling for $500 isn't going to win them any favor from me.
Yeah I mean I'm not saying it's impossible. $399 might happen. I just think it's gonna be in that $450-499 range mostly due to the fact the cost to build has to he quite a bit decently more than the Pro is.

Somewhere between $100 and $700 is a good bet.

$499 would be nice.
$399 is a mic drop moment.
I mean it's going to cost what it's going to cost. But if you're goal is to try to make Xbox the best place for multiplats pricing yourself out seems like an odd way to go about it. Lots of Xbox gamers here on gaf will throw down the $499 for Scorpio but outside of that, I can't really see many Xbox gamers really being excited for pay $499 for another console that plays the same games. Especially when they look across the isle and they see what PS4 is doing.
I honestly don't have a guess because I could equally see MS charged $399/$499 for this thing. But I keep looking at the specs and think, why is this thing $100 more than PS4 Pro a year later?

I don't even know if $399 is a mic drop moment. Here on gaf sure, but most gamers look at Scorpio like it's Xbox's PS4 Pro. $399 has kind of become the expected price for new console hardware.
Didn't you tell me you'd pay 599?
It's not going to do big numbers even at $399. There is the S it has to compete with. This is a targeted product, I don't think MS is expecting huge numbers.
Seriously. I'm going to buy regardless but if they really want to flip the script 499.99 ain't gonna do it.
Yeah, that was gonna be my next question...does MS even expect this to do big numbers?
I would imagine they'd like it to become their go-to device instead of the S, but at $499 I can't imagine they think that's realistic.
Where are you getting from that demand is huge? And you're on the 499$ train?

UHD is ~ $10 more than a normal Blu-Ray Drive
Vapor Chambers are not expensive at all. maybe $5 more than a normal Heatsink

The Xbox Scorpio SoC is basically the same size as the Ps4 Pro Soc 360mm vs 35Xmm
but will be manufactured 1 year later and only 36 out of 40 shader units needs to be functional. the yield will be great
that leaves 4 more DRAM chips that really cost (50%) more
Didn't you tell me you'd pay 599?
MS does not anticipate Scorpio being a huge seller. In fact they've stated on record they expect the S to be the main console moving forward still and to outsell Scorpio
No. Look at PS3 launch and Xbox One. Price might be the most important thing to many customers. Also Xbox lineup currently simply can't compete with PS4's. Maybe E3 can change that a bit but I doubt it.My question is if it's $499, does anyone think it'll do big numbers? Regardless of specs/quality/experience.
It's all part of the plan. Insinuate $499, then drop $399 bomb at E3.To me, this sounds like Phil is suggesting that Scorpio will be $499 or something like that. But I don't believe for a second that it will cost more than $399.
It would absolutely be. 399$ will have it sell like hot cakes. Add 100$ and im not sure anymore.
What a hardcore gamer would pay and what sells, are 2 different things.
That is my limit yes. Why?
