He gleefully MURDERS people.

He IS a corrupt leader. Murder is not prosperity. It is the opposite of prosperity.
That was something that was amusing/frustrating in the lead-up to the election, seeing people say that they were tired of corruption so they were going to vote for Duterte. Yeah, the guy who has ties to death squads and hit lists, millions of pesos in secret accounts, and strong ties to the Marcos family isn't corrupt... *rolls eyes*

My girlfriend is Filipino and her and her whole family supports him, and complains that no one knows how bad it is over there in terms of poverty and drugs. People want to see their country prosper and not have a corrupt leader, so this is why everyone accepts Duterte.
I'm Filipino and my whole conservative family is horrified by him

Not only is he corrupt, poverty and drugs are getting worse than ever because of him. The economy was actually getting better before Duterte got elected.

are the pinoys ok with him basically giving spratly to china? never understood why his approval rate etc is still so high

the mental gymnastics being done by his supporters will make your head spin

"the US didn't do anything, and now we can fish there"

as someone said, people want shortcuts to progress, they forgot how long it took for Singapore, Malayasia, Japan etc.. to progress

and now someone promises to eliminate crime in 6 months, what do you think would happen, same with Trump

I really wouldn't worry about the economy. The Philippines is actually doing pretty well and will continue to grow in the future. GMA and Aquino did well at that end.

Manila and the Metro area surrounding is 13 million people. It's the most densely packed city in the world. 4000 people have been murdered. I don't know If it was all in Manila but even if so that's about .0003 percent of the population of the city. People aren't seeing this in the streets. The people affected are the majority of the poor living in the streets. The people that "matter" the middle class aren't seeing this.

Your math is way off. That would be .03%.

That's the thing, drugs was not really a big problem if you look at the facts. Filipinos just liked his flashy personality and will make excuses for him. I'm a Filipino, I know how the Filipino psyche works. It's fucking disgusting and I have no problem telling other Filipinos how disgusting they are for supporting him.

The Purge indeed. YEAR ROUND.

Duterte's election is solid proof that we Filipinos are too stupid for own good. We lack even a modicum of critical thinking...we're all governed by emotion. Not really surprising considering the dismal level of education in the country. Just last month I had an argument with a guy who didn't know that Germans were responsible for the holocaust, and didn't know anything about nuclear energy . Oh, he has a degree and had actually seen the movie Schindler's List, hence the argument. So if an educated guy can turn out like that, what about the rest (80% or so) that barely made it out of middle school.

I have a theory that people here tolerate this madness because we're used to being stripped of our dignity. The power imbalance between the strong and the weak is insane. The poor being trampled on is the natural order of things. Nobody questions it. Heck, I grew up middle class and am now high-middle class so I have been cushioned from most injustices, yet I feel more valued as a human being when abroad vs. back home.

In terms of political maturity we're pretty much little children. Maybe Duterte is the leader we deserve :-/
It always comes down to more education, if you don't want people to be governed by emotion. I hope enough Filipinos understand the truth of what is happening, and how this won't make things any better.

How about a scenario where the ICC files a case against him and a powerful country that gives no fucks uses that as pretext to invade and arrest his ass. I could see China doing it to make themselves look like the righteous policeman of Asia.

assuming china continues to be a rational actor on the world stage i can't think of a scenario where they wouldn't continue to agitate closer to home rather than jumping steps all the way to the phillipines

No.

Why waste money and manpower in a military invasion? They're already building infrastructure in the country and have control of their seas. This is far more effective than playing World Police. Soon Philippines would be their next puppet if they aren't already.

Comparing him to the Punisher is not exactly helping, cause Punisher is an anti-hero who has a moral code and is against corruption, he wouldn't kill drug users who are not harming anyone. I bet he's revelling in that comparison. Duterte is more of a villain.

As a dual national of the US and Philippines, it really does feel bad to have to answer to TWO disgusting and revolting leaders.

You know why many filipinos support Mr Duterte?

Because in their eyes, the past two presidents literally did not do anything substantial except be corrupt.

To them, Duterte is a president who actually do things. In their eyes, it's to okay murder a criminal by hand. To them, this news of Duterte killing is proof that Duterte does things himself

I mean don't get me wrong, they are very flawed (especially Arroyo), but they did do lots of things especially for our economy. Sadly, these things are ignored.

Add the above with the spread of Fake Facebook news and Creation of fake Pro-Duterte Accounts (which was reportes to have happened to an extent), pro-duterte Youtube videos which gain millions of views and some memes here and there and you can now see how a middle class educated filipino would support him.

Always nice to be reminded that there are monsters among us, in the States, who'd love to see this campaign of extrajudicial murder imported.

I'm calling it again, Phillipines' new industry is going to be murder tourism. For $1000 foreigners can hire a guide to take them around to find a drug user so they can murder them. For just $1250 you can kill 2.

Tourists in Philippines be like: "Hmm, I'm just in the killing mood tonight and I feel like splurging anyway. Let's get my murder boner on!"

More like people will go to the Phillipines specifically to experience what it's like to murder someone. Closet serial killers who haven't yet gone so far off the deep end they're prepared to go to jail.

Just look at child sex tourism in SE Asia, its booming and that isn't even legal anywhere

If those type of tourists are scared off by Duterte then he will have been a successful for the Philippine people.

Which types of tourists, sex tourists or hypothetical murder tourists? If it is the former, Duterte won't be scaring any of them away. Child prostitution flourished in Davao City while he was Mayor and is as bad or worse now with his daughter and son currently serving as Mayor and Vice-Mayor respectively. It has repeatedly been on the list as being one of the worst cities for sex tourism and child prostition in the country. In '98 (when Duterte had been Mayor for eight of the previous ten years) an article for the Washington Times cited a report from a center for abused girls saying that more than a thousand teenage girls had turned to prostition and were charging as little as $.50 for their services. Just another thing that goes to show how absurd the "He wiped out crime in Davao City!" claims were.

Now 100% believe in the theory that this is all a simulation and that the arts is our way of sometimes predicting future events. In this case the annual purge.

EDIT: Actually the purge was too tame, its only 1 day of the year. Phillipines out purged the goddamn purge.

A lot of countries have laws against sex tourism, where having sex with minors in foreign countries is illegal, even if those minors are legal in their host countries. The same would happen with any hypothetical murder tourism.

Seriously? Given that the president is literally encouraging people to go out and kill drug users saying he vows not to punish anyone who personally executes a drug user or drug dealer?

Or do you mean that the US has laws against going to other countries for sex tourism? How often do you see people getting prosecuted for it? In a country such as the Phillipines where it's obviously so highly regarded by the administration, what makes you think they would cooperate with a foreign government? They would just say "no he was an upstanding tourist. He just wanted to visit the beautiful Phillipines"

I think he means the latter, that you can be prosecuted here in the US for that even though it happened elsewhere.
When I read the post though, my immediate reaction was "Sure, and as soon as the US politely asks for some assistance in an investigation, Duterte will start foaming at the mouth and yelling "Son of a whore!" at Trump or something until an aide can shove enough Fentanyl in his mouth to shut him up again.

The later. And Americans get prosecuted/convicted of sex tourism in Southeast Asia fairly regularly. It may work out to a small percentage of the actual perpetrators, but the possibility of up to 30 years in jail is better than nothing as far as deterrents go.

Motherfucker... Right on time too, typical Duterte. He says something either horrible or horribly dumb, he or a member of the government walks it back shortly after, and then the next day he is repeating it and doubling down. Just early this morning I was reading a quote from some cabinet staff member or something defending him and saying "No no no, he was implying that he went along with the police and wanted to find action, but he wasn't actually saying he killed anyone". So of course now we have Duterte out there repeating it, "Oh yeah, I've definitely killed people."
smh...

How fucked up is this world that we have a leader of a purportedly free country saying he callously murdered three people to an international news organization.

And absolutely nothing will come of it.

Best part:

"I'm not an addict, prescriptions don't count sorry"

Drug-addicted mentally unstable killer is the most popular president of all time.

Typical Duterte supporter: "And who is it that is saying this, a "news organization?" The news and media are all corrupt and biased, they have been out to get Duterte from the beginning. Don't believe everything you hear."

The people who need to do something about it are the people of the Philippines and unfortunately 86% of them disregard all critical news of Duterte as being fake and biased while believing anything Duterte or the pro-Duterte blogs/Facebook pages like Mocha Uson says.

Would be fucking hilarious if he turns out to have been or is a drug addict.

Right now, he is being praise all over the Filipino news, as he will let people get free medical care even if they have no medical ID or something along those lines. I have no idea where that money is coming from.

probably from the '50 billion' aid he said China will give to the Philippines when the US threatened to cut aid

btw his aides are still verifying where he got this number

Some people insist on learning things the hard way. Y'all enjoy the lesson, Phillipines. I feel so sorry for the people living there that actually have the capacity to use their god-damn brains

But how did he even get those 50 billion from China, what will China gain from this deal? He also wants China to build a train going through the country..
