Physician-Age: Calling all students and doctors

Just a suggestion, take it or leave it, but it might be worth taking step 1 and 2, applying for a preliminary year in internal medicine and take step 3. You could always fall back on doing shifts at an urgent care.

I've thought about doing that once I finish university and (hopefully) get a job where I can pay for the fees myself down the road. Right now though, I'm just focused on finishing this degree off. I've only got about 8 courses left to do, so the end is near!

In all honestly, 600 interviews and 200 acceptances are par for the course. McGill has something like 5000 applications, and 100 spots.

Edit: I wonder if I should be honest with myself. At this point, I'm really going through the motions of prepping for medical school application. My heart's not really in it. My grades are competitive, but my EC is barren (reflecting the lack of passion I have to do the stuff necessary to get an interview). It's interesting because I was originally quite enthusiastic, but I have lost that enthusiasm since my parents started telling everyone I was gonna be a doctor (I guess it shows how hollow my enthusiasm was).

600 interviews for 200 offers is pretty standard.

Good luck to all those waiting for the match! I'm waiting for Canadian Match day on March 5th. Nervous, excited and impatient :).

Those are good odds, all things considered

good luck to all those with match day coming next month, I know I was nervous as hell back in the day
Their usual applicant to offer ratio is actually 2:1 but this year they decided to interview more people... without increasing the number of places.

It's going to be one long month now.

Pre-med grad in Neuroscience (with Music as a secondary major oddly enough, mostly just for giggles and I love music). Came out of undergrad this past spring with the idea of taking time off to work in a hospital/medical research environment to gain both practical experience and hopefully put some money away before student loan debt tacks on come time for med school. Finally am about to get started on my first hospital job as a Surgical ORA. Not the most glamorous of positions, and I'm probably not even going to be a surgeon, but it's a full time job with benefits and in the medical field surrounded by professionals so I can't really complain (and it's a hell of a lot better than slave labor at Office Depot :/ ). But a few things I WILL complain about:

1. Finding hospital jobs with an undergrad degree is hard. Though honestly this seems to be a problem in just about every field of work. The entry level job position has all but ceased to exist. Even damn secretaries need like 5 years experience it seems.

2. Even when said job has been found and is practically in the bag, HR bullshit sucks. Was on the hook for nearly 3 whole months waiting on a job that I was told day of the interview that I pretty much owned. Didn't even get a formal offer until 2 weeks ago because after 2 months of run around I finally raised a stink with administration to find out that my application kept getting renewed/thrown out because their internal listing for the job I applied for had the wrong qualifications attached to it (which of course nobody bothered to fix until someone higher up came in to do something about it). Then 2 days before I needed it they told me I needed a physical copy of my social security card for an employee health appointment. Fast forward to the day of and I'm stuck 2 hours in the social security office and have to miss my appointment, only because like the DMV the government loves to keep fucking banker's hours from 9-2 and that was the first point at which I could even make it to the place almost an hour drive away, plus being tax season there's a shitload of other people there.

I got the soap eligible email today. I dunno why they do this shit just gives me more anxiety. Especially when they say it had nothing to do with nrmp match status which means they already know and not telling us!

Apparently the Match calculations are done extremely quickly.. like in a few hours and all this time is just used to double check the list and make sure there are no errors.

This Monday is more important to me than the Friday. I'm applying to something ultra competitive with no back up.

Silly question but I dont know where else to ask, so I got a prescription recently but they didnt have my dosage so they gave me half of a double dose, so instead of giving me 250mg pills they gave me 500mg and a tool to break up the pills in two. They didnt tell me anything about dealing with the separated pill, how long it lasts out of packaging. Could anyone here advise me on this?

I didn't know there were so many of us 4th years on here :)

It's going to be a fun weekend waiting for the email on Monday lol. And an even more agonizing week while we wait for Match day.

I'm applying to radiology. What's everyone else going into?

Call the pharmacy that gave you the script. They'll be able to help you out.

Chemistry can kiss me ass!

Damn, just found out I didn't get my training placement at Scotland's primary secure psychiatric unit.

I was really hoping for that one. :-/

Apparently due to some incompetent programming, you can find out where you matched already.

Congrats to all of those who did, and good luck SOAPing to all those who didn't.

Christ I'm tempted, but if they were somehow able to figure out what i did, I don't want to know what the consequences might be

Given that viewing source code for a page doesn't really fire any web events, I would imagine it'd be almost impossible to find out whether you did or not. Plus that can't really distinguish between somebody who's trying to find where they matched vs somebody who's doublechecking the results.

That said, if you're worried, I wouldn't do it. It's just a few days anyway. Just be happy you matched!

The site is (or was a bit ago) down anyway, presumably for a fix. I don't post here very often but...didn't match into an advanced position so it's a stressful week. Did match into a prelim, so there's that and it gives some options. Scrambling is unlikely but you never know. The thought of applying again in the future is nauseating right now and it feels like all the hard work for step 1, step 2, honoring rotations, etc was a waste.

I'm naturally an optimist so I'm betting on it all working out eventually and I'll certainly do my part to get it there. I don't wish the experience on anyone though. Congrats to you all who did match! Very happy for you! :)

Sorry to hear this man. I'm glad that you have a positive attitude, but it absolutely sucks not getting your advanced position.

At least you got a prelim year, so it's not a complete loss. Best of luck with the SOAP and reapplying if you need to.

good luck man, i hope things work out for you

the anxiety is killing me right now. adding to the misery, my in-laws are coming for the weekend. my hedonistic plan to spend the weekend drinking beers and playing video games has been RUINED.

One of the things I really like about Maastricht is the problem-based learning they use at the university (Maastricht's medicine faculty is the only one that uses this system in the Netherlands). You regularly have a small group of students, lead by a tutor, whom you have to work with on a case. To actually contribute to the group, you'll have to prepare well, read your materials, etc.

I know for myself, working in a group and having to live up to everyone's expectations will ''force'' me to actually start studying during the whole semester instead of the last few weeks leading up to the exam. I'll still be able to get a decent grade using the last method, but I don't think it's a very good way of studying haha. Plus I'm convinced actually working and solving things with the stuff you have to learn helps learning it.

You also start learning practical skills like patient consults, injecting vaccines and more stuff from year one, which also sounds good to me.

And also not unimportant, I really like Maastricht as a city. Not to massive like some other student cities in Holland, but there's still more than enough to do. (plus a lot of hot girls compared to other student cities :lol)

Results are officially out for everyone now. Hope everyone here is happy with where they ended up and have some good celebrations this weekend.
