a bit more hassle but I set up a custom macro in my photo editor to automatically convert (batch if necessary) them to .jpg

They're not consistently smaller or better quality than .jpeg either. You need a proper tool that tries multiple formats and settings and picks the best quality/size ratio.
I suspect people are being fooled into thinking they're saving lots of space because they uploaded a ton of 4mb pngs to begin with and are shocked when they are converted to a sensible lossy format.
