When I started doing my blog, I didn't expect much traffic, since it's mainly a lot of very personal stuff (well, photos) that only a few people very close to me will understand. To anyone else, it's a bunch of random pictures. But due to the frequency of my posting and the variety of topics I have, I'm finding that I get a lot of random traffic from google searches, due to the large amount of topics I've blogged on, along with a bunch of blogger referrals, maybe because I post fresh content so often.

I don't really even bother blogging on hobbies I find interesting (games, gadgets, etc) because so many other people are already doing it, and doing it better than I have the time to dedicate to it. But I guess I'm mainly doing it for myself, for things I can show to other people when they're asking how my son is doing, and so friends and family know what I'm up to, so I suppose even without very many hits, I'm still accomplishing what I set out to do.

I hope you other guys here realize what you're really blogging for, and aren't hoping to make a buck off adsence or anything like that, because it's the wrong reason to start doing this.

A majority of this is a friends-only blog mostly about gaming but nowadays I'm spilling other stuff into it. Feel free to friend me to see any locked off content.

Mine's called SUPERCILIOUS. [careful when opening it at work, that last post has an... "interesting" first image.]

It's mostly rants and ramblings. It's been neglected for a couple of weeks because of other sites that require my free time (plus an unhealthy "rediscovery" of Oblivion WTF), but I plan on writing some new shit soon.

It's on Wordpress, and the original template was redesigned by me with switching headers and pretty colors and shit. Damn I should really write something, the last post is really dated :-\

that's my attitude about my site. i keep it for experimentation as well as just keeping programming skills fresh. the little blog-type updates are just whatever comes to mind, presumably only read by friends and family. it doesn't matter if anyone reads it at all, actually.

I gotta agree, I just blog to blog, get my writing skills together. If you come, more the better, but I'm not exactly gonna push it on you or anything.

I linked your blog on mine. :P

And that PBF comic is cut off. You have to probably scale it down to 500 pixels wide. That's what I have to do for mine, and your column looks as wide as mine.

Yea, you're right. Actually it's 450 :-/. It'd be nice if the page expanded with the images, but oh well.

Thanks for the link! :D

Thought I'd give this a bump. Just started a blog of reviews of game-related crap... I kind of get sick of the 8-9-10/10 world of reviews, so I'm using a Next-Gen-esque /5 scale where 5 is pretty impressive.

One review up right now, but I think I'll be updating it weekly (or even more frequently if I can find the time)

I love the layout! good stuff!!

I just found this terrific article by Patrick Schaber (Digg FTW) that has a lot of great resources, tips, ideas, etc... for those looking to start a blog. It's also really handy though for those of us already running a blog. Be sure to check it out.

You REALLY need to change that color scheme, it's unreadable. At least you post to it more frequently than your pro blog.

For those of you that read other's blogs, I highly recommend Google Reader as an RSS reader. It's excellent, and a single stop shop for knowing when someone has updated something. I've tried a lot of other RSS readers and nothing else has come close.

I can read it just fine. I love it that way. and via friends, it changes the format through lj so anyone i particularly care to read it can read it well. join lj and view it the way you like!

It's semi-personal, with photography and occasionally my life going ons, but it's really all just writing for my own benefit. Basically just my thoughts on entertainment and certain media, as well as a dump for things I like and dislike.

Click! If you want to!

A few friends and I literally set up our blogs on our site like two days ago. It's our first time doing anything like this, but so far it's been pretty fun. It's still a work in progress, but feel free to check it out. Entertainment-related posts (games, movies, music, etc.) mostly.

I am in the same boat.. been like an entire week now. :lol

Still a little iffy on it and I'm certainly not the only one speaking up about this sort of thing (SDF comes to mind). Some of you are going to hate me, most likely, but I'm going to post it anyway (hooray generic wordpress layout):

Here it is!

A Dead End in the Series of Tubes

Mostly just late night ramblings that seem uninformed about soda, candy/food, video games, sports, and daily life.

Is there a way to check traffic on blogger?

Use Google analytics. You have to cut and paste a small piece of code into your template, but once it's done it gives you a ton of stats and info. Might be overkill to find out that 15 people are visiting a day though.

I've come to learn that sitemter is just about as baller, if not more so, than Google analytics. GA takes about a day to load all your stats, but sitemeter's up to the second with a ton of info too. It's nice to know my blog has reached people in Japan and Sweden.:D

count me as one of Japanese hits!

sitemeter is the best free tracker so far.

I do most of my blogging on my myspace page, but, I'm going to start writing a bunch more, so...here it is.

http://eternityhearkens.wordpress.com/

I haven't done much with it, but, i'm just going to use it for random stuff. I'm going to transfer some of my stuff from my myspace page, but, its going to take a while. I have like 70 something poems on it. o_O Practice though. :D

Hmm... I'll admit that Google Analytics lags behind a bit, but not by much for me. Certainly not a full day.
*shrug* goes by every 24 hours for me. Dunno why, specially since sitemeter's up to the second like that.

I select the current day from the calendar and it shows up to date stats for the day within about an hour or so.

I'm using SiteMeter too. For a few days I thought it wasn't working because it was stuck at 1 hit and I knew I must have gotten at least 5 or so. :lol

I then reinstalled it on my site, and now it's working. I've even gotten a hit from the UK (thanks, GAF!). But does anyone know an uncomplicated way to make it work without having the little SiteMeter logo on the page? It's not that big of a deal, but it would be cool if it could keep track without it.

Ah, what the hell.

The Writer's Block - http://cbrotherson.blogspot.com/

It's mostly to promote various articles of mine and forthcoming work, but I try to provide a little insight into the wonderful world of fiction and the videogames industry, given those are my places of work.

Although at the moment it's less games focused and more comic book oriented, as I've numerous comic book stories and fiction due for release in the next year or so.

"Everyday I'm hustlin'..."

if anyone cares, i changed up the layout and added a lot more content to my web site since earlier in the thread http://www.squackle.com/wordpress/

if anyone knows anything about PHP and CSS stylesheets or whatever and can help me out with finding out how to make this theme elastic rather than fixed that would be great!

The other thing is, if you are able to tape into such an audience, try to foster that. I got a huge influx of hits from the campaign to save Jericho after I blogged about it. In the 4 months since that point, I've made sure to continue covering it and visiting CBS' Jericho boards to remain on their radar. I even decided to devote Fridays during the summer to the series, as a way to drive traffic on an otherwise slower day.
You wrote this a while ago, but I find myself still puzzled by it. You stumbled into finding an under-served niche demo, but you don't have advertising, so that reason to tap that audience isn't present. It just strikes me as bizarre to regularly pander to readers in the hopes that they take an interest in what you were/are personally motivated enough to write about, especially when the former inevitably must eat into the latter. Unless you get off on high hit counts.

If people take an interest in what I write, that's great, but I feel no need to cater myself to them. That undermines the reason I bother to write in the first place.
