Pink Floyd's The Wall

The GOAT Pink Floyd album is "The Wall," Animals second, Wish you were here third, Dark Side of the Moon fourth, Meddle fifth...what a lineup....GOAT band

I disagree. I love The Wall as much as the next guy, but I don't see it as their best. My only problem with The Wall is that it became more of Roger's project than the bands. I think WYWH is their peak hour, a perfect combination of Roger and David, with a little input of Richard. But, when it comes to Pink Floyd, they have no #1 record.
Those 5 records are all simply excellent and one can't be decided. Giving a shout out to "Obscured By Clouds" and "Atom Heart Mother". Two very underrated albums. Especially Obscured, it gave us this shining gem:

I mean look at Pigs lyrics, I feel their lyricism is so underrated. Guess who I dedicate this song to?

Big man, pig man
Ha, ha, charade you are
You well heeled big wheel
Ha, ha, charade you are
And when your hand is on your heart
You're nearly a good laugh
Almost a joker
With your head down in the pig bin
Saying 'Keep on digging'
Pig stain on your fat chin
What do you hope to find
Down in the pig mine?
You're nearly a laugh
You're nearly a laugh
But you're really a cry

Bus stop rat bag
Ha, ha, charade you are
You fucked up old hag
Ha, ha, charade you are
You radiate cold shafts of broken glass
You're nearly a good laugh
Almost worth a quick grin
You like the feel of steel
You're hot stuff with a hatpin
And good fun with a hand gun
You're nearly a laugh
You're nearly a laugh
But you're really a cry

Hey you, White House
Ha, ha, charade you are
You house proud town mouse
Ha, ha, charade you are
You're trying to keep our feelings off the street
You're nearly a real treat
All tight lips and cold feet
And do you feel abused?
You got to stem the evil tide
And keep it all on the inside
Mary you're nearly a treat
Mary you're nearly a treat
But you're really a cry

Yeah, I can also definitely see that perspective. Both The Wall and the Final Cut are basically Roger Water solo albums with some input from the band. I'm still very much discovering their back catalogue, so I'm going to listen to Obscured by Clouds and Atom Heart Mother. I honestly feel their output is Beatleesque in quality, they developed from being a standard psych band to basically being the creators of prog rock and countless other genres

Personally I couldn't pick a favourite between Wish you were here, Animals and Darkside. All are pretty equal to me.

I had been listening to the album for years before finding out that in the UK spots meant acne.

It had honestly never occurred to me that other English speakers might not call them spots.

Personally I'm not a fan of the album. I've written on here before about how I much prefer their earlier (but post Syd) work. I've got that insanely overpriced 1965-1972 box set on its way to me from Amazon as we speak. Less words, more music, that's how I like my Floyd.

Talking of which, Spotify has the taster for the boxset up and it has two absolute gems. Firstly an absolutely amazing live version of Atom Heart Mother and then Nothing Part 14, an experiment that ended up forming part of Echoes. It is just amazing by itself.

I think Animals is more relevant to today than The Wall. The Final Cut too.

The Wall has a few songs that resonate to what we're seeing in the world these days, but it's more of a personal album about isolation and essentially a third man biography about Roger Waters himself.

I was there. I even have a piece of the pig (I'm not kidding). People started to walk out after Fearless where in the same song he had graphics for Black Lives Matter and flags for Palestine. We brought down the pig during Another brick in the wall pt 2. One of the best and most cathartic parts of my life.

Hope he comes in Italy soon, never seen him, "just" PF in '94.
Speaking of Waters' music, I like "amused to death" too.

People keep saying it's a Roger Waters album. So what? It's brilliant. It even has some of the best Gilmour guitar work. They totally raised the bar with The Wall - even the most accomplished bands could only dream of doing a project like that.

He has only announced US dates but I think wordwide dates come after. When I saw him at Desert Trip he basically played a greatest hits set list of Pink Floyd. He basically played from Meddle to The Wall. Money, I wish you were here, Run like Hell, Shine on You Crazy Diamond, Pigs, etc, I bought tickets for both of his LA shows. If he comes to Italy, even if you're in the most southern part or northern part of Italia, try to make it out. Pretty sure at the very least he'll have a Rome date.

Yeah, Rome and Milan are the usual places.

Holy shit @ the NA tour calendar! He booked almost all 2017, little chance for a Euro tour :V

The Final Cut is a personal favorite of mine, it's probably one of the weakest PF albums , musically speaking, but it's still good and some of the lyrics are amazing.

Speaking of Waters' music, I like "amused to death" too.

Yeah, Amused to Death is also worth checking out. It revisits some themes from The Wall, relevant again because of the first(!) Gulf War. Maybe if we had done something with that message we wouldn't all be in this clusterfuck together.

That man is crazy good at writing biting accusations.

We watched the tragedy unfold
We did as we were told
We bought and sold
It was the greatest show on earth
But then it was over
We ohhed and aahed
We drove our racing cars
We ate our last few jars of caviar
And somewhere out there in the stars
A keen-eyed look-out
Spied a flickering light
Our last hurrah

And when they found our shadows
Grouped around the TV sets
They ran down every lead
They repeated every test
They checked out all the data on their lists
And then the alien anthropologists
Admitted they were still perplexed
But on eliminating every other reason
For our sad demise
They logged the explanation left
This species has amused itself to death
No tears to cry no feelings left
This species has amused itself to death

Well, it is. Gilmour hardly had any actual songwriting contribution to it at all, apart from Comfortably Numb and a bit else here and there.

The rest of the band basically told Waters to go and come up with the album, he came up with two, the Wall being one, and The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking being the other. He told the band to chose one that they would make, and the other would be his next solo album (because the band was essentially already falling apart at that point).

Yeah he's like the epitome of how punk bands should write their songs.

Possibly my all time favorite album, it really is a must listen. I prefer to watch the film though as the images and atmosphere add so much to it, I still remember it vividly. I mean just look at this fucking box art for the VHS.

It always surprised me that last part didnt make the album. It so damn good. Was it written after The Wall released?

It is called "What Shall We Do Now?" and was originally meant to be on the album but it was cut due to running time issues. It happened quite late in the game though and the original pressings had the lyrics on the sleeve:

ETA:
Bit more about it here.

The album just hits a mood few others hope to achieve. Combined with Dark Side and Wish You Were Here, it's Holy Trinity material yes I said it even though I'd include Animals as a prophet somewhere in the equation.

Comfortably Numb > your waifu

Damn, you weren't kidding about insanely overpriced. I can live on that for two months lol.

Set looks awesome though, I'm interested in the unreleased tracks.

For those not it the know, The Final Cut is a sequel of sorts to The Wall, built on cut tracks and reworked from a planned companion piece to the movie. It's also pretty much literally a Waters solo album performed by Pink Floyd rather than a Pink Floyd album.

It is also my favorite Pink Floyd album. So much emotion.

Ooooooooooo,I need a dirty women... ;)

Great concept album, in the vein of Lamb lies down and Thick as a Brick of the time.

Saw this live at the Big O in Montreal, from what I remember,it was awesome ;)

Fuck yeah! The Wall will forever be my favorite Floyd album, it's just too perfect. Not taking anything away from the others, I love all of Floyd's music, I just love The Wall more.

I fucking love the lyrics to Nobody Home, just amazing.

I've got a little black book with my poems in
I've got a bag with a toothbrush and a comb in
When I'm a good dog they sometimes throw me a bone in
I got elastic bands keeping my shoes on
Got those swollen hand blues.
Got thirteen channels of shit on the T.V. to choose from
I've got electric light
And I've got second sight
I've got amazing powers of observation
And that is how I know
When I try to get through
On the telephone to you
There'll be nobody home
I've got the obligatory Hendrix perm
And I've got the inevitable pinhole burns
All down the front of my favourite satin shirt
I've got nicotine stains on my fingers
I've got a silver spoon on a chain
I've got a grand piano to prop up my mortal remains
I've got wild staring eyes
I've got a strong urge to fly
But I've got nowhere to fly to
Ooooh Babe when I pick up the phone
There's still nobody home
I've got a pair of Gohills boots
And I've got fading roots.

Comfortably Numb > your waifu

Agreed.

I think the Wall is the weakest of the three (and Animals is better in some ways), because in its effort to tell a story there are a few songs I would cut. I can't say that of the others. But for its, ambition, it is beyond excellent.

If you like The Wall, DSotM, Animals, WyWH, do check out Waters solo work. Especially Amused to Death and Radio KAOS. Amazing body of work.

Be sure to check out the movie
81JRiqB.jpg

I saw the tour twice and the movie in the cinema.
It's still relevant, now more than ever... and that is pretty scary.

When the wall falls at the end it causes so much motion in my subwoofer that the room cools down from the air movement. And my sub is not that great. The whole thing is spectacular.

There are some great cuts on The Wall, but overall it's a bit too rock opera-y for me to call it their best work.

Dark Side > WYWH > Animals > The Wall > Meddle

Think I'm going to try and catch Waters when he comes around here next year. I skipped out on David Gilmour this year because I wasn't that interested, but I regretted it almost immediately after.

Waters was on Marc Maron's WTF Podcast two weeks ago (just pre-election) - strongly recommend you listen to it. An hour of his thoughts on music and poltics and human rights - he sounds like a friendly - but also clearly explosive - alternate earth version of Bernie. Like a warrior.

Amused to Death is easliy Roger Waters best work imo

Yes, even better than the Wall (which is more or less a solo album by Waters)

Everyone who remotely enjoys the Wall should listen to Amused to Death

Both albums are scarily up to date with all that is going on in the world even though they are 40 and 20 years old

You weren't kidding with those two tracks, they are amazing. My favorite album (that technically isn't an album) is Live in Pompeii. Now that Cre/ation is on Spotify I need to listen through it.

The Wall is a great album no doubt, but it feels more like a Roger Waters album than a Pink Floyd album. I never got a political feeling of the album though, and as far as I know it was meant to reflect the psychological state of Pink Floyd and primarily Roger at that time.

At the time when the album was released of course Pink Floyd was immensely popular, but music videos weren't a big deal yet so it was up to the listener to interpret the music. There was almost 3 years after the album when the movie was released so everybody was completely familiar with the album, but unsure what the movie would be like. I was expecting it to be a concert performance with some added stuff, but once it was released everybody said... "Dude, you MUST see this movie." Of course we were blown away to see the band's definitive interpretation of the great album. We all had our own vision of the album, so to get a rebirth vision years later was incredible and added layers to the interpretation.

The Berlin Wall show was the next step but really just feeding off the success of the album and movie, but still significantly added to the legacy. The double album, the movie, all the live performances. It's hard to find an album with similar attention like Pink Floyd - The Wall.

It is what you want it to be. What makes it so impressive is that it is so didactic (it literally tells the story of Pink) and yet has so many different ways of metaphorical interpretation. True art, in my opinion.

Also, live at pompeii is fantastic. Particularly echoes.

I never thought I'd say this, but I wish Bowie wasn't in the performance.

Goodbye cruel world, I'm leaving you today
Goodbye goodbye goodbye
Goodbye all you people, there's nothing you can say
To make me change my mind
Goodbye

It is so simple but it really hits.

Arguably my favorite album of all time. Pink Floyd and Roger Waters both suffered from the breakup. Solo Roger Waters is too dour, Pink Floyd without Roger is too lite.

We lived off this album in Reagan's and Thatcher's 80's. Check out The Final Cut album, which seems to get closer to real as we stroll along.
I love The Final Cut. Very underrated, imo.

Mind blown.

I mean look at Pigs lyrics, I feel their lyricism is so underrated. Guess who I dedicate this song to?

You weren't the only one. Waters dedicated the entire song to him.

Saw the Wall twice in the last few years, but nothing was as good as seeing Roger Waters play at Desert Trip in Indio. And that's saying something considering he followed The Who.

He blew us all away with Pigs. Imagery of Trump as a pig and then the masterpiece, the massive pig that floated over the entire concert.

Edit: Found a video of the show I was at

I'd say save Obscured By Clouds/AHM for later, the latter is pretty psychedelic and might be a bit hard to get into without knowing their other bigger albums, but it is excellent. OBC is really relaxing and just fun, it's the album between Meddle and Dark Side.
