Why aren't there any modern games as scary as that?

I dont know..

I fuckin love REmake to death, but i think survival horror, at least for me, benefits more from psychological horror than from anything else, plot also helps. I think Silent Hill 2 just nailed this, so as a pinnaple of the genre, id put it above RE. Even SH1 was great in its "less is more" regard considering hardware limitations, that fog really helped the atmosphere.

When it breakes down to wich is my favorite, i dont really know.. it could be REmake.

Remake has Silent Hill 2 by the balls when looking at gameplay though. It's production values are through the roof and with a director as great as Mikami, every penny went to the right place. It's funny how much atmosphere is gained just by recording different footstep sounds in high quality. The backgrounds being static is also very important. The camera angles are fine tuned and you always see what the director wanted... no hiccups there.

I love Silent Hill and it's the most scary game series out there. But Remake is just perfect in every sense...

And Remake has a great plot. You uncover it metroid style. Or if you don't feel like it, you can skip it all. Lisa Trevor had Lynch's elephant man vibes on her backstory. I get chills just thinking about it.

I don't consider SH2 to be the pinnacle of survival-horror, because its gameplay isn't quite up to par. It has a great story, but it's generally not as scary or as difficult as other titles in the genre like Fatal Frame 2, REmake, Siren or the very recent Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

I was a humongous Half-Life fan but I don't share the feeling that HL2 is the top fps, not even in the top five possibly. Absolutely great, but I'm not quite there with the rest of you.

The shooting aspect of HL2 isn't anything special, gravity gun became old before the HL2 campaign ended. Visuals and physics were great, the length of the campaign and the variety within were the absolute highpoints. Driving does not feel good (an unfortunate trait I feel is shared among most fps titles ). The biggest shame is that the combat just does not make it much worth replaying imho. I could play HL1 marine fights over and over but HL2 had a peculiar and disappointing downgrade here from it's six year older predecessor, the most important aspect of any fps.

I found BioShock to be quite more thrilling in 2007 than HL2 in 2004 (talking pure campaign focused fps titles). BS is very stilted though, linear and stiff.

As for best shooter ever... for it's time it was probably Half-life 1.
Crysis is probably the best fps visually (on a high end pc. Art direction and assets award goes to Killzone 2 however) but the campaign is as boring as rocks.
Halo 1 is a classic but the second half of the campaign was seriously flawed.

I guess...

Half-life 2 is actually the pinnacle of a great fps campaign currently on the market. A bit disappointing to me (I wouldn't put that adventure anything near the flawless experience I had with Demon's Souls for example, then again I wouldn't have done that with any rpg either made in the last five-eight years).

REmake scared me moslty in a cheap scare factor (i dont really wanna use this words because i love the game, but i dont know how else to describe it) as in moments that made me jump, or desperately run away, stuff like that. SH2 got to me in a whole different way.

Agreed there. Its a Mikami game.

Silent Hill 1 is the pinnacle of horror gaming.

The adventure ark and execution is absolutely perfect.

It is possibly the greatest game ever created.

No other game has such a deep atmosphere, such much investment of personal emotions when playing it. Eternal classic.

Kids these days... Halo, or any FPS this gen, is not the best in the genre.
StarEye said:
How is sci-fi settings more adult than actual historical setting?
Civ is a dumbed down version of Alpha Centauri.

FPS should be divided between console and computer due to the never ending shitty battle between 'M+KB FOR LIFE' and controllers.

also, for consoles it's obviously halo at the top of the genre, but quite a long way.

You mean, Alpha Centauri is a more advance version of Civ. Civ came first, remember.

Yeah, Civ came first. Too bad its still inferior to Alpha Centauri. But hey, barbarians are infinitely more significant than mind worms and diplomacy has taken huge steps forward since then right?
