Pixar's BRAVE - Theatrical Trailer

I'm looking forward to the movie but the trailer was meh. It just shows a bunch of disjointed scenes that don't really convey any information about the movie other than "rebellious daughter riding a horse".

It doesn't tell you the plot no but you learn a lot of context quickly.

It's a patriarchal society where the strong men are supposed to sweep the dainty maiden off of her feet.
Problem is most of the men are inept and the maiden shows no interest in romance. The inept men is establishing what happens later.

You also see a father/daughter relationship that's close and a mother/daughter relationship that's at odds, showing an ideological conflict and differing values of two generations.

So, I don't see how you can say it doesn't convey information.

I am not liking the accents of the characters. I know nothing about how the accent should sound, but something about it bothers me when compared to other movies/characters of similar origins.

The fact these people are actually Scottish?

Also I'm mesmerised by this GIF on the Apple trailers site:

NVM him, I don't see anything changing his mind.

As for DreamWorks, they may not try to force the viewer to cry with every film like Pixar does ... and they may not have all aces in their history (neither does Pixar btw) but they are CLEARLY capable of making amazing films that stand up to anything Disney or Pixar makes. It's silly seeing people use them as some kind of insult ...

To ME this movie just doesn't grab me. After HTTYD (and even Tangled) this setting just doesn't feel fresh. Also doesn't help that the first female main character they make is in a "Princess film" (the lil bit of history we know of that went on behind the scenes doesn't help any either).

Yep. Incredibly disappointed that she's a princess.

Really? These voices destroy the doofus' cast they got for the young characters in How to Train Your Dragon.

maybe you should listen to some real scottish people for a change.

Most of the voice cast is Scottish, which is pretty nice, as Scottish accents are usually the ones that are mangled by Hollywood. One of the worst examples in recent memory is the bloke in the GI Joe movie's intro.

Just caught the new clip. Animation is great, style is good. The only thing that may slightly worry me is what the overall tone might be. But I'm not too worried.

I would say only How to Train a Dragon comes close, and personally I think the only element of the movie that works is the dragon. They still have a way to go, even if some individual pieces are getting better.

I think they're main drawback these days is relying on marquee casting instead the "right voice". Dustin Hoffman in KFP or Jay Baruchel in HTTYD are two glaring examples of just straight up awful voice acting. Whereas Pixar will hire an animator to do a voice and it steals the movie (Rattalouie).

Both Nemo and Up were very light hearted, but could get quite... dark, at parts. So I wouldn't worry too much.

Damn you, now I'm thinking about a Ratatouille voiced by Louis CK

Looks so good. Love the animation and art direction.

Looking at this image makes me wonder how awesome the part where she's alone in the woods could be.

It seems pretty damn dark, and if the only bright color in those scenes is basically her red hair, that would be nice looking. I also echo the sentiment from someone above that the part where she's alone (bear hunting?) looks to be the best part of the movie, while the beginning/end of the movie with her family/town might be less interesting.

Just love the character designs in this. One of my biggest issues with Dreamworks is the ugly human designs (exception fo the adults on HTTYD).

Upon rewatching the clip, I've noticed that this is not normal English, it's like real Scottish words and dialects (I don't actually know what it sounds like). It feels really authentic, the Pixar difference at work.

I think I figured out something that definitely has to be happening. If so, it will be somewhat heartbreaking.
She seems really close to her father, the king, and the more mature mother is likely a better leader, but more abrasive and not close to Merrida. So I'm going to assume the father dies. It will make a much better story.

Well the cast is essentially all Scottish.

Also speaking of which here's a question to my American friends, but do you think English and Scottish sound the same?

....no, not at all. I can tell the difference between at least a dozen UK dialects.

Seriously can't wait for it. It's obvious they paid super close to details on her hair after seeing the outcome of fans from Tangled. Day 1.

There were some incredibly dark moments in Tory Story 3.
the part where they accepted their fate to die in the furnace
The begging of UP was also super depressing.

Good. I'm tired of seeing the entire movie spoiled in the trailers.

I am in the camp that for a first female lead feature from Pixar, they picked a role that is entirely safe and boring, very much a stereotype.

That's one of many issues. I happened to watch half of Megamind a couple weekends ago, and couldn't help but notice that while DWA has shied away from obvious pop culture gags, they still rely on general pop culture crap. That movie had so many sequences that relied on old pop songs to induce nostalgia and force some fun into scenes. And then it closed on yet another pop song and dance. Their scripts aren't strong enough so they cover it up with pop songs that audiences already like.

And the character designs... yuck.

They're also not doing any shit like how How to Train Your Dragon gave Scottish accents to the adults and then the kids mysteriously all sounded like modern teens. That was pretty dumb.

The two minute clip didn't do anything for me but we'll see. I never thought I'd like Tangled but that movie was awesome. My main issue with Pixar films has been pacing and being overly sentimental.

I'm probably very very late but the 3 bear cubs in the first trailer appear to be Merida's siblings.

I never noticed it until I re-watched the trailer again just now.

Agreed. Hoping to be proven wrong but dear lord, how many times has this character been done before? :/

While people forget that there was a legitimate reason for doing this besides getting certain actors, it's true that it didn't really work and it really detracted more than it added.

Wow! That trailer was MUCH better. Fucking hell Disney, what the fuck is WRONG with your marketing department?

So are those blue things going to be the equivalent of kodamas?

Generic princess shit sells better than "the real movie".

See that overhyped Tangled movie.

This trailer makes me both hyped about the movie, and pissed that the American marketing made this movie seem so mediocre.

I've always maintained that whoever's in charge of the marketing (specifically, trailers) for Pixar movies doesn't know what the fuck they're doing. Every single Pixar trailer makes me go "meh" until I actually see the movie and I realize that the trailer just sucked ass (exception being Cars 2. The actual move WAS ass). Hell, they managed to fucking make THE INCREDIBLES look "meh". That's an accomplishment in incompetence if I've ever seen one.

Pixar trailers for the US always play to slapstick and takes jokes out of context to make them seem stupid and Dreamworks-y. They NEVER explain the plot, or rather, they tell so little of it that you get the idea that the plot will be far worse than what it actually is (though they might be doing it so that you don't get spoilered). They always pick scenes that don't do the animation justice, and they just suck at selling the movie in general.

Frankly, if I went on trailers alone I would've written off Pixar since Monsters Inc came out for being a shitty studio (I remember HATING the teaser trailer, and yet it's my 2nd favorite Pixar movie ever). I'm sure a lot of people feel the same way in that they go watch Pixar movies no thanks to the shitty trailers.

I don't remember the trailers that well but I will say that 99% of trailers nowadays "show too much leg".
They give away the entire damn story and dip well beyond the second act.

Tut, tut.

The teasers however are always masterfully done.
