Planetside Next (Sony MMO) coming in March?

In an interview with the Escapist:

"We have a very big launch coming in the month of March," [SOE President John] Smedley said. "It's a big first person shooter franchise that we're really happy with."

I took a leap of logic and asked whether it was Planetside.

"Could be," Smedley said sheepishly. "We haven't technically announced it." He then told me that I could say that he "hinted" that the new Planetside was imminent, which translates to 99% of a confirmation. "This is the farthest I've gone [discussing it with the press] and the PR people are going to shoot me."
"[Planetside Next] is the coolest god-damned game," Smedley said. "I'm so in love with that game."

This could be big, people. I never played the first one but I heard a lot about it. I'm always up for a sci fi shooter and one with hundreds of people at one time would be awesome.

I was kinda hyped about an imminent Planetside announcement by Sony until I played Borderlands. Now I'm certain that any MMOFPS needs to be more like that than the original Planetside.

But that's just my opinion man.

Eh... completely different styles of game. Borderlands was basically just diablo the fps. Planetside is pretty different.

I dunno, I think expanding the Planetside model (as I understand it - I missed it the first go 'round but won't miss a sequel) would work much better for an MMO. Give some customization options and take a few notes from how TF2 handles hats and how CoD handles gun customization and go for it.

Borderlands seems far more suited to expanding in a different direction, far more PvE with 4-6 players than massive PvP.

Not many PC games that I am planning on buying at release in 2011, but another Planetside would be one of them. Hope it turns out to be true.

Well, The Agency is due until late 2011. That's what they recently mentioned. Hopefully they won't botch it like they did with DCUO.

In March?

I'm guessing it's Planetside Browser or PSN or something.

They started hiring to start up Planetside 2 development earlier this year, March would be years too soon.

Which one do you think will be pushed to 2012?

The Agency.

They also have Free Realms PS3 on the go too.

I wouldn't be surprised to see one of these MMO's appear on the PSP2 if it has a persistent internet connection as an option. They aren't graphically intensive.

Don't The Agency and DCU run on the Unreal Engine 3?

I'm always amazed at the love that Planetside gets. Why did it attract such few players?
I assume the reason was that one was usueless solo, it's not like many MMOs where there were some things you couldn't do without a group, you basically can't do anything outside a group in Planetside. I also figure a lot of people got turned off if during their experience they were getting hammered by the other side, it could get pretty frustrating when your side was inept and the other side was unstoppable.

But it was an awesome game, I'd be down for trying a sequel.

Planetside was great, Im going to jump into the next one day one, hopefully beta it again if they have one going. But at its best the game was great. Get a hundred or more people from at least 2 sides fighting over a base and it was just so fucking fun.

Jump in a vehicle, man the gun, suicide run through the base mowing people down, get mobbed and destroyed

....respawn

Jump into a large ass Galaxy dropship and skydive down on top of the base with 7 others, hack into the building and mow unsuspecting (and sometimes afk) people down in the halls, get overrun near their spawn room, and get destroyed

...respawn

Go to your nearest base to the fight and jump in a 1 man aircraft, fly back to the fight and blast people inside their base running around with fucking missles...Draw the attention of a few people with anti air skills, get destroyed.

...respawn

Put on a stealth suit....run into their base and assassinate their snipers on the walls of the base. Mistake some guy holding a fucking chaingun as a sniper, get destroyed....

..respawn

On and on and on. That game was so fucking fun initially. The more layers they added the less fun it got to me, especially when the population nosedove. But at its peak I fucking loved it. I would play for hours without even joining any groups or anything to help coordinate actually WINNING the battle we were fighting. I just didnt give a shit, I was content jumping in and fighting randomly. Their instant action button was such a cool idea too. Log in, hit the instant action button and get drop shipped right on top of wherever theres a fight going on in game :lol :lol

March is here. So what is happening with this?

I'm expecting this to be a browser variant of the first game or similar.

supposedly there is a PS3 version, so YAY! we get to use the Browser to play it \o/

I really liked Planetside. I started playing in the early beta and by the time it released I really felt like I had seen every thing the game had to offer. So I didn't play too long beyond release. Really looking forward to PS2 though. Weird that is is supposedly coming so soon and no media or anything has been released on it though...

I doubt whatever is coming soon is the actual Planetside 2. I believe it's something browser based that will revive the franchise a bit before a full fledged sequel is hyped up.

Not a bad guess. Seeing as we've heard basically nothing about Planetside beyond tiny-ass teases I doubt there'd be anything big until perhaps the latter half of the year, if that.
