Played 'WOW' for the first time last night

You ever play Ultima Online in its early days? Talk about magical! :)
This! UO during the Second Age expansion has yet to be beaten by any MMO yet. There are still things that aren't done nearly as well over a decade later (owning your own private boat, or buying a house deed and getting to build a house anywhere out in the wilderness).

It was top down.

I loved my first leveling experience. You can do almost everything solo, although I did group up a few times for group quests a few levels above me. Getting ganked is a bummer but world PvP can be neat so I think it's worth rolling on a PvP server.

my 2c

try EVERY class, to at least 10th (be about 2-3 hrs per class) and judge which one fits you best.

i found shaman to be my favorite followed in no particular order by warrior rogue hunter priest, but i always stick to my shaman.

i've been playing wow since F&F alpha.

I did buy the full game- came with a 30 day trial. I guess it's not impossible that I'll re-up once it expires, but I sorta looked at it as "I'm spending $ 25 on a game to play for a month."

I only hear the horror stories of people who've become addicted, surely there are some who just played the game for a bit, had fun, and moved on.

Right?

I just resubbed yesterday...after nearly 5 months. Warcrack indeed.

But I will say this, WoW has probably given me the very best gaming experiences of my adult life. While it does get boring, and grinding reputations/instances/materials just isn't fun in my book, the highs are something no-one should miss out on.

Oh I play a mage as well, best class in the game imo. :D

EDIT: Haha, Google Video still has my attempt at a PvP video back at level 60, man I suck. :lol

It's $15 per month.

It's just a video game. Keep playing if you like it; stop playing if you don't like it.

I quit a few times for months/years at a time and I find that I get bored at the level cap without a good guild. The leveling experience is still a blast solo.

Don´t worry about anything. Don´t take any advice. Just play the game. This, if anything, is the strength of WoW.

PvP servers are more fun btw.

Solo is fun but try and do all the instances with a good group...since this is your first time, some of the original early instances, like Deadmines or even Shadowfang Keep are just awesome...

I would like to try WoW, but I hear it isn't very solo friendly.

You heard wrong, it's been solo friendly since it has been in beta (and has only gotten better).

But for the best loot, you obviously need to group up and do the raids/instances. It is an MMO after all.

Yeah. Obviously there's loads of people like that - they're just not as interesting as the folks who are/were addicted.

As a former addict myself (I used to play about 10 hours a day, 7 days a week in a my younger days), the game definitely becomes way less fun when you start treating it like a job, but it's an amazing experience if you play it casually and have some fun with it.

Don't worry about the folks saying it's boring solo, either. I found it a ton of fun.

price wise if you can manage work irl family and gaming...its worth the 15 a month

I play (shaman mostly -80th level do icc up through potato heads in 10 and 25 man)
my Wife plays(hunter - 80th level- plays with me
my 9yr old son plays(80th deathknight- plays lots of pvp, starting to do icc 10 man with me and the wife)

my 6yr old twins each have characters - one on my account one on my wife's account

my 9yr old has his own account.

on average we play ~20 hrs a week together- we do this instead of watching movies or tv.

my favorite quest is. the outhouse in umm grizzly hills a believe it is... wife and i both almost peed our pants we laughed so hard.

I played this game for about 3.5 weeks in March 2009. Went the same route, bought the base game and said "This is it, only 30 days". About 12 days in I picked up Burning Crusade, and a week after that I got Wrath as well. Made it to level 73 with a Paladin, then rolled a warlock that got up to 50 something. Good god it was glorious (and a little depressing at the same time. School was on strike and didnt have work, so I could throw away an entire month. Sunk like 360 hours in that 3.5 weeks, doing 14-16 hour days. Man that shit was addictive)

You can absolutely solo your way through. My buddies who had 80s kept being like "Oh, we're gonna run you through this dungeon for good loot" and we'd spend like 3 hours doing one instance, then do it again to get a better loot drop. Then, when they would log off I would level up a couple more times and find a green item that was so much better than the purple I just wasted so much time getting. You level so much faster now than it used to take that you really don't have to worry about gearing up until you hit the level cap, since you wont be spending a week or two getting 2 or 3 levels, rather they can possibly come in the course of an afternoon.

Also, Stranglethorn Vale (possibly as much as level 30-40) is amazing. Best zone in the game in my opinion, followed by Ungoro Crater (level 52-56 or so). STV is the first time you are likely to encounter the other side for PvP purposes, and the art is fantastic. It's an overgrown jungle with Aztec style ruins and is so bright and cheerful. It was also the place I first conquered in PvP (prior to this it was just getting rocked by 80 raids into my starting zone...jerks). Took out a 37 hunter when I was only 31. It took everything I had, all my cooldowns and extras and some potions, and I got immediately destroyed 3 times running the minute he came back, but it was so worth it!! (then I called in 3 80 reinforcements, horde guy got his buddies, my guys called in their guild, etc. There was an all out war going on after about 20 minutes, it was amazing). Just do your own thing, if you want to quest, quest. If you want to do an instance, just join up with a group that is broadcasting in the area. You're in for a good time.

WoW is really a great game all around.... but I can't justify the monthly cost. If it was a one time purchase or pay per time, I would be all over it.

I have been over a year wow-free. I'm starting to twitch reading this thread.

Then LEAVE. Leave this thread before the game's powerful dark magic take you back. You can still save your soul from this virtual prison! You're starting to twitch, which means the dark magic is getting close to reach your mind. It still remember you & how you were able to flee from its grasp. GO NOW! It's too late for Whoomp... he is already one of us.

Me too, I quit the game just before WotLK came out, game just took up too much of my time.

I'm glad I quit as I have way more time for other things and having to stay in for raids was always restricting, but I loved the game and still have WOW pangs every now and again wanting to go back and play - somehow I think I'll survive without it.

Bisnic said:
Should have waited for Cataclysm before doing that.

All you are playing now is an outdated world from 6 years ago that will be updated in a few months to be as good as the high lvl zones.

Well, better in that way. Then, he will be able to play 2 different games, even if one of them is old.

I have been WOW free for 1.75 years, must not go back, damn expansion!

I say it's a good time to start. You get to see all the old stuff before it changes forever. The best thing I can tell you is find a good group of people to level with, have fun with, etc ... The people I play WoW with have pretty much been the same for over 5+ years and the great group + the great game keep me playing and coming back after breaks.

I haven't played since the release of Burning Crusade, making me three years WoW free. I believe my priest is still on some server somewhere sitting around at level 61 with a load of Naxx gear and High Warlord PVP stuff.

This thread isn't making me want to play again.. But Cataclysm does. It looks so good.

Meh, WoW isnt all about raiding. Been playing since 2006 and never been really into a raiding guild. Everytime i tried, i got bored of doing the same raid every week, 3 days a week. I couldn't even play an alt or another game that day if i wanted to, because that damn raid was forcing me to skip those. Fuck that. And this shit gets boring very fast, especially with bad groups, or people being always late.

I enjoy WoW enough by making many new characters and just questing, doing 5 mans, getting new achievements, and doing a few pug raids & bgs when i feel like it, and when I want it, not forced by a guild.

I subscribe for maybe a few months a year, enjoy my time with the game and then leave it alone again. It IS easy to get into the game in a big way, which I did initially (Though not to the point where I would consider myself addicted to the game), but if you're looking for a levelling/questing experience (My personal favourite way of playing the game - I love the quests and the new toys every couple of levels) then you can play for any amount of time and still make meaningful progress.

If you're lucky, you'll make some friends and you'll see how much better these games are when you can be in a group of like-minded individuals (Nothing too hardcore though!).

I actually re-installed this the other night, but haven't re-activated my account yet. Not sure whether to try another class now, or wait a little while for Cataclysm. If they don't announce a date soon I might just start again now. :)

Yes, great advice. I've been in a few guilds but never raided. If I do look for a guild I'm always looking for social ones. :)

We should start a poll...

How many people who clicked on this thread think I'll keep playing after the first month?

You may not if you aren't playing it with anyone else. I personally find MMOs rather dull unless I'm playing with another person, but that's just me.

Damn you! Now I'm thinking of my Undead Warlock all alone, in digital limbo, waiting for me to ressurrect my account. DAMN YOU!

I actually downloaded the trial a few nights ago and found the game to be very, very boring. I played for about two hours, just doing the quests around the Abbey. I think I got to level 7 or 8. Didn't see any point in continuing so I exited the game and then uninstalled it.

The nice thing about WoW is it allows for a variety of different playstyles. When I started playing (a month after the initial release), I also wanted nothing more than a solo experience. I had no desire to enter instances, join guilds, or go on raids. As time went on I got to know more and more people in the game, and started gravitating towards the activities that we could do as a group. Now I'm in a hardcore raiding guild. But as I've gone through all of those different experiences I can really appreciate that all of them can be fun. The solo game in WoW is great. The group experiences in WoW (raids) are great. And both of them are perfectly legitimate ways to enjoy the game.

I've played on and off again since release and just recently started playing again after a year off due to not being able to afford to play an mmo and my account was recently hacked, luckily they didn't steal/delete anything.

I mostly solo, I think I've only ever grouped once or twice. Highest level character is only a lvl50 warlock. I have a crap load of characters I play though. I know I'll never see the high level content or raid stuff, but I really don't care. Still really enjoy the game and really can't wait for Cataclysm.

Been wow-free for a year and a half now. =) That game ate up 1.5 years of my life (literally, in game time).

Yeah, I'm still on the fence myself. Played for a couple of hours, got my mage to level 5.

Seems alright so far, but I'm not 'sold' at this point. Liked it enough that I'm looking forward to playing more tonight. Depending on how busy my weekend is I may do a nice binge on Friday night. Figure that'll give me a good idea on whether I'm in or out.

That'd influence your decision.

I promise you it wouldn't. If I wanna keep playing, I will. If I don't, I won't. And if I become an unwashed addict I promise I'll bump this thread and own up to it. That'd be good times.

I played it for about 30 minutes on friend's computer, it was just as I thought it would be (i.e. not fun at all for me). Haven't touched it ever since nor I ever will :\

Have yet to still even try this game. I watched someone play it 6 years ago and it looked so zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Yeah don't worry. I don't have an addictive type of behavior, usually, and I can't say I've ever been addicted to a video game before (not like I've heard people, especially with WoW). I play the game maybe 2-3 months out of the year in any given year, and I've been playing since the game came out. It's nice to play it for a bit and then take a few months off, because when you get back in to it there is always something new and exciting to do, and the sense of nostalgia never gets old.

Until you reach level 15+ and when you start really getting into instancing and integrating into guilds (and thus the whole social aspect of the game) it'll seem boring. But really, as you level higher up, the more addictive it gets. There isn't much to be interested about at lower levels and that's to be expected.
