Playing Actraiser for the first time

What magic is being talked about? Because this star one will not hit this boss at all. Fuck, it missed the little thing that it shot out as well. Cast three times it did ONE point of damage to the boss.
The time limit is almost halfway gone, I have 2 points of HP left and have done a total of five damage. Fucking hell.

The fact that magic doesn't come back when you continue with a life pisses me off. Gotta spend a few minutes letting enemies kill me if it doesn't work my first time.

You could try doing some of the other areas first.

I think the progression goes something like ->
Fillmore, Bloodpool, Kasandora, Aitos, Marahna(where you're at currently), and then Northwall.

Then again if you've already completed those areas then hmm.. =(

Maybe this would work? eh.

Course it's not an honest playthrough since the dude uses a bazillion savestates to make it perfect.

Yeah, this is all I have to do at this point.

Edit: WTF? It only takes one MP to cast the star magic in the US version?

Edit: And the boss never pulls his head back in like it does in the Japanese version. No wonder I'm bitching so much, all you folks had it easy as hell.

I'll never understand game designers who think simply making stuff hit harder or take more damage constitutes harder difficulty.

In our relentless pursuit of excellence aren't we already going to attempt to play through games taking as little to no damage as possible? So why not figure out better ways to make the game more challenging like more difficult enemy placement, new attacks/patterns, and so on?

I'll never grasp why game designers continue to fall back on the cheapest and laziest elements to challenge players.

Well, in their defense, in each subsequent release of the first game they did add another easier difficulty level to the game, so they must have agreed that the original version was a bit too hard... but yeah, that doesn't explain the sequel going back to the original probably-too-hard ways, without any other difficulty settings available.

I told you that they made it a lot easier, and more fun really, in the US release...

It's still not easy, really. It's just not brutally hard, and that's not so bad... it was a fun but ultimately doable challenge (with enough retries), and that's probably just about right really. Alhough, the European version, with a simple difficulty select at the start, has it best, for sure.

Yeah but still, the fact that the magic just coasts right over the boss is kind of annoying.
The stiffness of the controls just began to piss me off.
The thing is with this time limit I know I'm doing something wrong, but there really is no foreseeable solution. The fucking tentacle comes over quickly so each time I get one MAYBE two hits in. Magic is lucky if it gets in one point of damage. Granted, I've been out of magic 5 lives ago so, now I'm just slowly pecking at it.

1-2 hits is all you should be getting in.

Still, a 50% less cost on casting this magic makes for a huge difference. I could have cast it 8 times instead of 4!
And the pattern is different. Dude in that video got a lot of hits in before he had to back off. I can get in one or maybe two.

FUCK YEAH.
Well tickle my bum, that took a long time. The clock was real low, I was out of MP and I was at 3 HP but I got the fucker.
Shit.

I remember renting this game and being completely lost when the over world section came up :lol

Like the first time i rented dragon warrior, i had no idea what a turnbased rpg was. You should have seen the brawl i got into with my controller.
My Mom got me Dragon Warrior for Christmas one year and I think I was 8 or 9 years old. I fought some Slimes, went somewhere I wasn't supposed to go after that and got pwned.

Well holy crap nevermind then I guess there's more to Pro mode than more damage going around.

That sucks.

Though I guess it works out better for the US version since they just tack the original difficulty back into "Professional" mode.

I feel your pain

So I'm level 17 but it says 0 to next level. Nothing I guess?
Just beat Northwall's second stage.

So, I have to beat all the area bosses on 5 lives and 7 charges of magic? Wtf. :(

I really don't want to just shelve this game, but this gauntlet is assy as hell.

I may actually just throw the cartridge away.

I just timed out on the fucking snake bos because the platform wouldn't drop.
For 111 seconds, because I WATCHED, it would not drop the platform.
If I stood up, I would die. Instead the game just killed me.
And he had 1 HP left. I used up my magic just to actually hit him because the fucking platforms wouldn't drop to begin with to let me get up and damage him.
This game is shit.

I am going to take a shit on my copy of Actraiser, set it on fire, piss it out and then stomp it until my foot bleeds.

I actually just played this for the first time about two weeks ago and loved the shit out of it. I played it all day but got stuck on the final level/boss. Still stuck on the damn thing... Amazing game though. Time to find the sequel.

But I don't have the US version. And the US version has the downfall of being in English.

I just watched a video on NicoNico of a guy fighting up to the same boss I'm having trouble with. Video went for 25 minutes until he just said he gave up. :(

FUCK YEAH I BEAT IT!

OH NO THERE IS ANOTHER FORM FUCK MY ASSSSSS

....

:(

NO THIRD FORM!
SATAN DEAD MEANS CLEAR!

DEATH HEIM
CLEAR!

FUCK YESSSS

Boss gauntlets are still shit. :D

Seriously, it was that damn fifth boss. Without being able to spam magic like I did the first time, I had to watch a Japanese TAS video of Professional to see how they did it without magic. I still spent all my magic on the boss, though. Surprisingly getting the Dragon's pattern down wasn't that bad and Satan's first form was pretty cake. Form two was just patience.

But the damn broken snake boss is shit. If you get on the platform at the wrong angle, he will NOT set you back down and you have to sit up there until the time runs out or you let go of the button and stand up and die. Utter horse shit.

Not gonna buy 2, though. It was around ¥4000 and if it's harder than this, screw that.

ActRaiser 2 is substantially harder, the controls are even more clunky, and there is no simulation mode.

On the other hand, it's pretty allegorically rich. The 7 worlds of ActRaiser 2 represent the 7 sins, and the final level is pretty much ripped straight out of Dante's Inferno. IIRC the Japanese version even calls the last level "Hell". The last boss is Satan, and he's done up just like Dante's Satan; encased from the waste down in ice. It's a very inspired appropriation of the literature.

The ending is also similar to the ending from ActRaiser 1, but cooler. Honestly, find a cheaper copy of the game and use a GameGenie to get through it. It's worth a playthrough ever if it's frustrating.

Hrm.
If the Lust stage has titties, I'll buy it.
