Playing bright hdr games is like stepping out in the sun.

You're double right. Before the HDR colours and brightness we know today, there was a visual effect in games of the same initials that simulates the eye adjustment that happens when you go from being inside to a bright outdoors. Half-Life 2 was an early game to use it.

I was skeptical and negative but now that I have lg oled 48" c1 as my monitor... you are right. Correct hdr is pitch black with properly bright light sources.
Kinda amazing looking. Death Stranding is madness

Played the newest CoD on PC, as I got it free with my RTX 3080, and lighting seemed like crap. I think that is one thing that deters me from playing games on PC. Yeah you can crank the graphics settings up, but everything looks washed out. And I played CoD on a Acer Predator XB271HU 1440p IPS monitor.

I always turn it on in game. And you can see the hdr sign when its on. But it does not pop like it does on console.

Maybe its my mind playing tricks.

nah, you are on to something for sure.
On your c9 the dynamic tone mapping makes all the difference

But is it too bright?
Because I am about to buy a 4k hdr tv but my girlfriend is quite photosensible (if it is the right word) and it can give headaches and migraines.
Can HDR be enjoyed at a lower level of brightness?

Its getting there. Its really real bright. It is like being outside. I dont think i would turn on a game like the witness if i had an hangover.

But im sure you can turn it down.

Jup. AC Origins prolly did this effect best. Exiting the pitch black pyramid and the dark preparation into the arena was always blinding me. LOVED this to bits.

After being used to HDR colors and brightness it's really hard to go back.

There's usually 2 main settings to change if you want to avoid this, the intensity of back-lighting and the "eco" parameters that dimmers the brightness too (mine have zero- low-med-high) so with that don't worry it should be plenty enough room to have a good setting, pro tips : never set the back lighting to near max setting, 1 to 2 years of use and have to replace the LED panel, happened to me, cost me nothing since the warranty was still on, to avoid this just set it at 40 max ( 0 to 50 )

IPS monitor. There's your problem. PC monitors atm are absolute shit when it comes to proper HDR.

Thanks for the reply man and yeah the back lighting on my current Tv is at something like the first 5% of intensity.

Yup, they're great. The biggest "am I on the beach" moment was in AC Odyssey. If you go to Crete it's extra bright, it looks great! Need a proper HDR FALD though, OLEDs are dim as fuck & not suitable for this kind of HDR impact. Used to have a nice video to showcase, but the guy seems to have nuked his channel. Ah well.

When Xbox insiders released the dolby vision testing in some games , what an upgrade it was over the flat hdr10 , I don't know how they pulled it off but games looked bright, colorful but not overbearing. With hdr10 I do feel like I'm looking at the sun with a 2000nit TV at night. Definitely try using the HDR Calibration.

I was torn between inky black oled and 2000 nit qled when I got my new TV. In the end burning my retinas won and I got the Q90.

have this on PO, can wait for pc hdr1400, the intensity should be stronger than over a large screen from the sofa

Can someone post/share best settings for C9 for highest brightness (PC and PS5 use)?
I mean the colors and picture quality is amazing but HDR isnt super bright. I know its an OLED so wont be as bright as FALD, but still if someone can post best settings that would be great.

Whatever you do, turn of dynamic tonemapping (!) go for HGIG and configure it in the system settings.

I tried HGIG but it seemed pretty low brightness to me as compared to other options. How do I resolve that?

Might be "pretty low brightness" compared to dynamic tonemapping but at least it's accurate. When using dynamic tonemapping, everything is blown outta proportions constantly, based on the scene. There's no consistancy and can result i overblown whites and crushed blacks = enormous loss of detail.

Make sure you calibrate it correctly in the system setting, with HGIG selected (!)

I turned off HDR on PS5 and Series X on my LG OLED. It was causing eye strain from the bright HUD elements in some games which use pure white. Eye strain gone. Hope devs start realizing pure white HUDs and pure white loading screens are like knives in the eyeballs on HDR.

Exactly when are dev going to understand that bright white screen are a pain in the ass?Sometimes I play gamer at 2 or 3am and my girlfriends sleeps near me and a bright sudden white screen pops up, it burns my eyes and wakes her up.And all that for what?
A fucking loading screen!! It consume more electricity, burn the eyes is not good for the TV but yeah fuck it let's put some everywhere.

HDR really is a game changer.

Even on a monitor that supposedly isn't amazing for HDR (Dell S27S21DGF), the difference is definitely noticeable. I hadn't really understood it before experiencing it but now I get it.

Which TV are you planning to get? Most TVs have a separate option to change peak brightness, without having to change backlight strength (which is supposed to be at max in HDR).

At first I was planning on a LG CX but since I'm mainly using my PC on it, I finally chose the Sony Xh 9096, I saw that it has all the feature I want and an excellent image quality.
If i can manage to get enough money maybe that Samsung 8K Q90t mostly for its anti reflective screen which would allow me to lower the brightness or back lighting even more.

I don't get it honestly. SDR already has enough range to hurt my eyes when going from a dark scene to a bright one in a dark room (which is typically how I choose to play games / watch films). Having to look away from my display because it's like looking at the sun does not appeal to me, personally.

Not too familiar with Samsung, but Sony has a setting for peak brightness (x-tended dynamic range), which helps with bright highlights.

The Witness is an HDR showpiece. Looks stunning.

Something to keep in mind: HDR is not only about technicalities, but also about how it's artistically implemented.

God of War also has an amazing implementation

FF XV is also night and day difference

HDR in Zero Dawn, Gears 5, Doom Eternal, Borderlands 3, Forza 4, Gran Turismo Sport is basically a showcase of how fucking good the tech is. Doom has probably the widest range of color at use and it just pops, like the level with the bfg 10000 firing in the background is kinda mental on its own right

Borderlands 3 is utterly brilliant with it because its all about lasers, neons and elemental effects fucking everywhere all cranked up to the max with a proper art direction making it look like something else, honestly the heist DLC alone is worth having a screen for it. Gears 5 is single handedly elevated by the tech too, especially Hivebusters

Yeah I know what you mean.

Because of this I selected grey subtitles in Disney+ and a transparent font with Netflix. Otherwise the subs would constantly blind you :lollipop_astonished:

Now it great!

On the LG you can turn on Eye Comfort Mode to lessen eye strain when using HDR

I thought HDR suppose to make the color pop, all I'm seeing from PS4 is it just makes game darker and harder to see. The color is also muted and saturated, when I turn the in-game display back to normal, the color comes back. Happens to every game.

What is wrong with HDR, or am I doing something wrong? My TV has HDR settings and everything but I've yet to experience what you guys are talking about.

You usually have to tweak SDR and HDR TV settings individually.

I've actually started turning hdr off in a lot of games it kills the colors and makes a washed out yet brighter image.
