Playing Half-Life 2 with the Oculus Rift is a life changing gaming experiance.

Very much considering investing the money in an Oculus Rift dev kit. Love to see what I could do with one and see HL2 in this form.

wait for the 1080p. It´s like 3 times higher resolution because it does not only have 2 times more pixel but also is a smaller screen. The difference will be gigantic.

The demos are fantastic but this, when you are placed in a world.. just nothing beats it.
I agree. Of everything I tried, HL2 is the best overall package right now.

I also really like the semi-detached aiming controls that Valve have implemented.

I hope so. HL2 and other games below 90 FOV are unplayable, so unless I can change it, well, I guess I'm SOL.
The FoV you get with a Rift is fixed to match the real FoV you are seeing. Everything else would be a recipe for disaster.

Actually, as long as it ends up mapped to the same FoV, the size of the screen isn't really relevant.

Is there an estimated date for those to be released? or if they would be around the same prices as the currently available units?

I want to try Bioshock Infinite. That game gave me the feeling of being in some fantasy Disneyland before... In Oculus, I think it will be surreal.

And those skyhooks... @_@

Wouldn't the screen size being smaller be negated by the lenses because they try to emulate your entire field of view?

I get sick while playing HL2 (and no other shooter). (Yes, I've tried several workarounds and solutions.)

I wonder if the Rift would render the game playable for me.

I think his point was that the newer one will have a higher pixel density as well as a higher resolution. Kind of like going from an iPhone 3GS to an iPhone 4.

Does it not waste less Screen Area because of the better aspect ratio +smaller screen now? Less black wasted area on the right and left and more pixels in front of your eyes?

Don't the dated graphics take away from the experience?

Absolutely, but there's a sense of immersion that the original doesn't have on a 2D monitor.

I would hope so. If you take the lenses off and look at what is actually being rendered, it's kind of shockingly less than you'd think it would be. If the smaller screen means more pixels used (by percentage) in the area magnified by the lenses, it should be a better experience right off the bat before you even calculate for the increased resolution.

Fun games are fun.. last time I checked.

Valid concern when talking about VR. I don't see what you needed to post a snarky response.

You can't feel immersed into a game world that doesn't feel real at all. But I think HL2 looks good enough. But I guess something like Quake 3 would look too dated to be enjoyed with the rift.

The way you described it sounds godly. I really think this is the future. If not the Rift then one of the successors years down the line, something sleeker that the masses will be cool with wearing. This is the real next-gen, at least in terms of immersion.

Well Sony apparently has dev kits so the OR hitting the masses might be sooner than we thought. If Sony is already liking the device could see them supporting it with the PS4 and using it as their "kinect" in terms of a new peripheral to increase sales.

Minecraft is really fun on the DevKit and it has very basic graphics. I see no reason why older games wouldn't be playable, outside of the HUD potentially being an issue.

Can't wait to try it but fuck Ravenholm with that thing on, I'm just going to stack cars and debris and jump past most of it again. And if they get Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines working on it, fuck that hotel, the crack house, the mansion, and the hospital.

I want a Rift now :(

Nope.

Second worst god damn enemy in the game, only defeated by:

The only thing that could make them worse is if the headcrabs they threw were on fire, spit spiders, and gave you real crabs. ..real fire crabs.

I got my rift a few days ago and have been blown away by the games and the demos but one thing stands out Half-Life 2.

It's the first real story based game to be given support and I have never felt like I've been in a world more than playing this on the rift.

City 17 is huge and empty, every little detail is given life through the 3d, head-tracking and position you are in the world.

There is NOTHING like, standing there in the room with the characters talking to you feeling like you're there, or having your gun really held in front of you and you pick of the enemies.

Everyone has to try this, I have no doubt it is the future.
I've been telling everyone who'll listen. Doom 3 is equally convincing and stands out in different ways. This is a game changer. Quite literally. A true watershed moment for most anyone who gets to try it out. I'll never forget the first time I fought man hacks in VR.

But the pixelated graphics are apart of the charm, HL2 is technically dated. Don't get me wrong the experience sounds amazing and I hope modern games get support for it, heres hoping for HL3 support anyhow.

Yeah I didnt mean to be rude to the orginal poster but I dont see how graphics have anything to do with it. Hell I am sure doom could be with the Oculus Rift.. (even though unmodded you would only be able to look sideways :P)

I can't wait to experience a horror game on the Rift. Something like Amnesia or Slender seems like it would be incredible with this setup.

I am waiting for the 1080p version.

I am going to need one of you guys to come over and get through Ravenholm for me.

no problem. I got through it just fine. But if you need someone to show you the megalodon in Ocean Rift you'll have to get someone else.

Yes. A racing game with a proper wheel setup would be amazing.

I got my Rift a couple of weeks ago. So far the best experience I've had on it is playing Dirt 2. The headtracking doesn't work in menus, so it's a bit uncomfortable there, but once you're in the game it's absolutely amazing. For anyone that has a Rift, here's a guide to getting Dirt 2 and 3 working properly.

I was playing with a controller too. It would only be better with a racing wheel.

GRID should get proper support through vireio in the coming weeks. I'm really looking forward to that, but this new experience only makes me more sad that they chose not to include cockpit view in GRID 2.

I can't wait to get my hands on one of these things. I just hope that it won't make me sick. I'm kinda prone to motion sickness and am really really hoping this doesn't do me in.

Imagine an Amnesia like game designed for the Rift.

I think I'd poop my pants, twice.

I think there might have to be legit warnings for stuff like that. VR horror would literally be a brand new experience and someone will surely have a major panic attack, if not go into cardiac arrest.

Hngggg, that fucking virtual theater! Maybe in the future you could be like in the same theater with a friend online and you can both watch movies with each others respective rifts while interacting with each mother and dicking around in the virtual theater online.

jesus, going on movie dates will be so awesome in a few years.

You can simultaneously be in a 3D IMAX theater while sitting on the toilet taking care of business? The future is bright, my friends!

I am honestly surprised at how well this thing as been received. For the longest time, I ignored this because I thought it was just another gimmick, but I am actually excited now.

So regarding motion sickness / nausea. Different people are affected differently, that's a given. What exactly is causing this though? Is it because of the disconnect between what's going on in your field of vision and the fact that your body isn't moving accordingly, so the brain gets 'confused'? Or is it more of a technology issue, the way the LCD screen works?

Over a year ago John Carmack told us that this was good. How could you not believe?
I don't think John Carmack has really released a decent game in many years. John Carmack also told people that Doom 3 would get official Oculus Rift support, I thought? Did you believe him when he said that? ;)

I'm glad both Doom 3 and Minecraft have ended up with Rift support in practice, even though support in both cases has apparently been purely fan-created.

So... anyone in Central Illinois want to let me try this thing out?

I'm trying my damndest to ignore every GAF thread with this so that I can make the wait for the consumer-edition easier, but... fuck you GAF, just fuck you, OK?

Yeah, it's the dissonance between what your brain expects and what your brain is actually seeing. I can't make myself sick using a Rift no matter how hard I try, but I've let people try it out that reported almost instant nausea.

I guess the fix for most people would be a 120hz screen being used, but I don't know if that's feasible in the near future, or if that's something Oculus would need to have manufactured specifically for them.
