Playing Metal Gear Solid 1 feels like going from one diorama to another

Yes, the video was done by me, but the channel is my hobby, no monetizing.

This game is so tiny and short, if all the cutscenes are cut, there are so few places to go. Even the backtracking takes no effort compared to modern games. Back in 1999 this felt like such a massive game to me, but zooming out (literally), the world is so small.

Fast forward all the talking, there's nothing left. There is nothing to explore! I guess they pushed the PS1 with its 3,5MB RAM to the max.

Honestly not all games need to be massive / long. Tell a good tight story, it's still great dollars/hour of entertainment. Stop padding games with endless "content" quests like an MMO.

You are right, but this isn't what I mean.

Back then, the world felt large. But actually it's super tiny.

Nope not that one. Supposedly there is/was a remake in development and that it was supposed to be a PS5 Exclusive.

Why would anyone do this. A decent remaster would do the job.

The entire game is tailored around PS1 aesthetic.

If thats the case and he utilized every bit of the PS1, that's genius storytelling. Your massive world in MGSV meant nothing.
 
small or big, it's depend on the presentation
the game could be felt big if the presentation is right

first megaman legend is small
kakariko village is small
even if You consider FF 7 - 9 prerendered city is small as well

buuut, they felt so big not because old days, but the feels are just right.
 
Twin Snakes was alright for a Nintendo exclusive variant, but the new cutscenes by some random Japanese director really changed the tone of the entire game by making it extra cheesy and over the top. I also did not like how they changed some of the voices (missed the original accents).

If and when they have another remake, I hope they can give us an option of having the OG voice track.

Yeah really cant give a Fck about exploring .. this modern schtick of exploration is why we have open world bloated everything
 
All they needed to do to make it feel massive was to give the player a very limited viewpoint.


Edit: and put in hours of VA dialogue, of course.
MGS would have felt so much smaller if every dialogue was just written.

This is why a remake would have to redesign Shadow Moses and/or expand the game in some way. The entire game's enemy count is low too, so you can't give modernised controls to what is effectively a 2D Metal Gear game for the most part a 1:1 remake unless the AI is dialled up to unfair levels.
 
The 3rd-person RTC mod for it is incredible. It enhances the atmosphere and vibe to a completely new level and I'd like to think this is what the game would have been had Konami made it on the PC over the PlayStation.

Putting aside what they did with writing and presentation, they completely destroyed the gameplay flow as well by simply slapping the mechanics of MGS2 on MGS1s level design without changing it one bit. That game was so bad.

That's what I was saying. The game itself can be finished in a very short time, if you know what you're doing. It's all the blablabla that eats up the time.

Jokes apart, looks great, but the camera behind Snake FOV is absolutely terrible. I'm sure the dude customized it. I don't like it. I'm sure it looks better in AR.

Yeah. As far back as 2018 it was rumoured that Blue Point games were working on a mgs1 remake. Turns out it was all fan speculations that caught traction. Blue Point has since closed its doors and was working on some live service game but perhaps the fan reaction is what inspired Konami to go with the mgs3 delta remake.

100% agree. The remake is one of those weird oddities.
I remember looking forward to it so much at the time, as on paper it sounded like a great idea. Especially seeing what the GameCube Resident Evil 1 remake did.

But sadly it feel short of that. Not a total bad game but it felt different and missing something. Such as the things you say.

I was replaying it last year and was surprised by how small the game is. Especially if you know what to do.

Fun fact. If you stop to think about it, Liquid Snake took the entire base, with metal gear and a entire nuclear arsenal, with 5 guys and less than 40 troopers.
