Playstation 2 launched 20 years ago in the US

Danny Dudekisser

I paid good money for this Dynex!
And it's still the best Playstation console overall by a country mile.

You will never get this kind of lineup again:

The sheer hype leading up to this thing (fairly or not) has never been matched, and getting your hands on one at launch was nigh impossible. This was what a new console should be like - exciting.

Though the launch titles did kind of suck :-/

i remember my cousin bringing it over with burnout 2 and gran turismo , my head exploded i couldnt believe what i was looking at.

it was also my dvd player up until i got a ps3, what a console

Had some true classics but if only the video output on the console wasn't so horrendous. Interlaced blur all over the place, headache & vomit inducing at times.

GOAT

Got a silver thicc ps2 for christmas with FFX back in the day, my very first FF. Good Times.

Small problem, my parents didn't buy me a memory card. So I had to replay the first hours again after the weekend.

God damn this makes me feel old.

Best console ever probably. Just in that picture of exclusive from 2001 alone have some of my favorite games ever.
Silent Hill 2
Metal Gear Solid 2

I also really like GTA III, Jak & Daxter, FFX (voice acting aside) and Devil May Cry

Man, I remember the first trailer for MGS2 and when I first saw it. My mind was completely blown away how video games could look so good. I haven't been awed like that since. MGS2 still holds up to this day with it's gameplay as well, something really amazing for such an old game.

I dunno, The PS2 launch games weren't that bad, at least in the US and Europe.

Ridge Racer V looks terrible with its egregious aliasing but it has one of the best, if not the best gameplay of the franchise. And its soundtrack is siiiick, bro !

Tekken Tag Tournament is still very fun to play and SSX was a looker as well as a great-playing snowboard game.

And let's not forget DOA2 Hardcore, Dynasty Warriors 2, Smuggler's Run... I've seen worse titles to launch a machine, really :)

Yeah, Fantavision does suck but people seem to hyper-focus on this game a tad too much and forget how diverse and overall quite OK the line-up actually was.

I do agree that the PS2 would truly hit its stride once GT3 came out. And yeah, that 2001 line-up of games is, quite frankly, historical, unmatched and influential beyond belief. I don't know if we will ever see that again...

Happy birthday to the best black monolith ever !

Hard to argue against it being the best console ever. I came in a year or two late and I had a huge library of high-quality games to choose from.

The best console ever made. Hands down. The best games ever made, and a cheap ass DVD player to boot, at a time when they were red hot popular.

It is shocking when you look at it. The games industry is in some kind of creative slump these days, there's no doubt about it. Fuelled by greed, laziness and a general contempt for gamers.
It's an interesting thought and probably deserves its own thread. So many games are released on a weekly basis now but so few really stand out. Even indy games look amazing and they might be big for a few months but are we really going to be talking about Among Us or Fall Guys twenty years from now?

Easily a top three console for me, alongside Xbox 360 and the Super Nintendo. Funny how each "big 3" company perfected the landing on their second time out.

There's a reason I still have a PS2 hooked up to a TV in my house to this day. I'm still finding new games to play.

The fact that this also plays PS1 games is also a gem. It's a shame Sony couldn't maintain that level of backwards compatibility.

Still, give me Dark Cloud 2 or Tekken 5 over most games released today, and I'll sit there with the biggest smile on my face.

I've been saying it for years, but yeah, I feel like the average game quality is much higher now than it was 20 years ago, but there are very, very few highlights anymore.

About perfecting the landing on their third try.

Nintendo - Nintendo 64
Sony - PS3
MS- Xbox one

Yea....

That was not PS2's launch lineup.....

My comment still stands:

Ridge Racer V
Midnight Club
Armored Core 2
SSX
Timesplitters
Tekken Tag Tournament
Unreal Tournament
Smuggler Run
Ready 2 Rumble Boxing: Round 2
Dead or Alive 2: Hardcore
Dynasty Warriors 2

We could only dream of such a great, diverse launch like this ever again.

Something that bears mentioning is how absurdly packed the library is. I'm certain that my personal top 30 would look very different than many of the rest of GAF's. None of the Jak & Daxters, God of Wars, Devil May crys, or GTAs would show up on my list, while all of those might show up on someone else's. Conversely, I'm not sure many folks would put Espgaluda or Daioujou or Twinkle Star Sprites 2 into their Top 30 but I would.

Going to go against the grain here but it's my least enjoyed ps and I had them all. I got into pc gaming and the graphics just didn't cut it for me. Enjoyed legacy of Cain and soul Reaver on it

Me and my GF at the time went hunting for one that morning. She scoured the Bronx and me Manhattan, even though we didn't think we had a chance in hell of finding one since by then Sony already announced there will only be half a million available for the entire country at launch.

So she comes up empty as expected, and after trying 86th street I head to Herald Square at 34th to check. Kaybee, nothing.
Game Express on 32nd, nothing.

About to jump on the D train before i remebered the midnight launch was at Software Etc on 32nd. So for the hell of it I went there to check out the kiosk I saw on TV from the night before.

Didn't bother asking if they had any units and started messing with the demo kiosk. Then this kid comes running in sweating like a animal and while trying to catch his breath he asks "Do you...." cough " have any PS2s? "

The sales guy at the counter leaned into him and said in a low voice "If you buy two games i got one in the back to sell you"

I almost threw up after hearing that and watched the kid pull out a few hundred dollars and run out of the store with his new PS2.

Disgusted I'm about to leave the store when I figured let me ask him if he'll get any more PS2s by March like I read online.

The guy looks at me, leans forward and says in a low voice "If you buy two games I'll sell you one."

Turns out a number of people didn't pick up their reserved machines the night before. A few people in the store heard this and they bought the remaining no shows PS2s up. The poor sales guy said "Please keep this quiet i don't need a riot in here"

Bought Madden and Dynasty Warriors there and went to Game Express and picked up Tekken Tag.

Unfortunately no one had any memory cards until a month later so couldn't save anything, but I didn't give a shit I was happy enough to just have it.

I camped out overnight at a Walmart but it was actually a fun party kind if atmosphere. The fact that it is 20 years makes me feel very old.

Nothing will ever touch PS2 first year but PS5 ain't too bad based on what's been announced so far

OG PS3 was the best ever...all the PS2 + 7 years if PS3 games...

I recall my cousin's boyfriend bring over their PS2 to my Dad's house most Sundays and I'd spend a few hours on GTA III. I also remember around the same time I went to my brother's friend's house and he had SOCOM (1) with the headset; and playing it with the headset voice commands blew my mind.

Was still another ~year before I got one, we were never well off, so it was a massive deal that I got it. Remember 007: Agent Under Fire and GTA III being my first games. I picked it up from Comet with my mum earlier in the day and I remember having it set up and when my older brother came home from what I believe was his first job I surprised him with it, the grin on his face. It was my console but we effectively shared it, I think it was around the holidays and we basically sat and played it for about five days straight and lived on cereal. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Greatest console ever - my fighting game collection on the PS2 is huge, there was something for everyone in it. Still hooked up to this day. Love this console. It got me back to console gaming after four years without owning a console at the time.

And to think some bozos dare to say the PS5 launch line-up is better. The delusion is real. lol

Tekken Tag looked like a dream.

I bought all those launch window titles and they were all amazing. PS2 was really the peak to me of the classic console where single player games ruled and multiplayer was just an afterthought. I like A lot about the current consoles and future consoles but the PS1 and PS2 were a very exciting time to be into video games. The PS1, PS2 and the Dreamcast(mostly for it's underdog status) were probably my favorite consoles.

I had mine on launch. I got it from Babbages. I still remember how paranoid I was for leaving it in standby mode or turning it off completely from the back. I held down the button for two seconds and shut it down. I'd shut it down from the back if I was going to be gone for a while. My launch console eventually had issues with blue discs. Tekken Tag Tournament looked better on PS2 than in the arcade at the time.

I also remember those silly passwords for the DVD player. There was a default password if you somehow messed it up. I think it was 7444.

I've already posted this here once before, but my Dad pre-ordered mine for me but died almost a month before it came out, i've still got it, long since broken, but i'll never throw it away, my last present from my Dad, Sony truly built the hype with the PS2 though, I remember them sending us a VHS Tape with videos of PS2 games on it a few months before launch, they sent an info pack in the post as well, legendary console that will always be special to me.

Just look at those games.

LOOK. AT. THOSE. FUCKING. GAMES.

PS5 has nothing like it.

XSX... well... it's dead.

Ahhh PS2 launch....I was saving my weekly allowance for one. The night before, the local news was on and was showing lines out multiples stores.

I went to my Dad and told him, "Look! people are already waiting in line for the Playstation!" He was like, "ahhh relax - don't worry, you'll get one!". I had just enough money to get the Console and cover the taxes.

We got to Target at around 4AM and there was a long line of people. It was said to be over 100. I got out the car and was hearing people saying " uh ohhhh, tooo laaaate". I was at the very end of the line. Come 6AM, the Managers come out and say that they were giving out 100 units. Needless to say, I didn't get one. Went to school later that morning with money in the pocket.

Took me about 3 months to find one after that. I repeated the same mistake with the PS3, but luckily it only took me a month to get one. A called randomly at Gamestop and they had one left in the back room.

Ever since then I made sure to pre-order what I need in advance to avoid the lines and avoid the hunt for a Console. This time around, I got very lucky with Walmart on the pre-orders. It's been a shitshow so far, but I hope everyone that wants can get theirs soon.

Its either the PS1 or PS2 thats my favourite console. So much for monopoly positions. The Playstation systems delivered despite being alone at the top.

I think the PS2 launch was okay ish. It wasn't great, but not as bad as some made it out to be. TTT, RRV, SSX, Timesplitters were solid games. Some games (mainly ports) looked worse than Dreamcast games which was kind of a big deal back then because Sony promised magic. But the 4 above looked better than pretty much any DC game out there, lol.

Once DMC, MGS2, Silent Hill 2 and GTA 3 came out, any doubt was gone.

Ps2 was terrific until the xbox and gamecube released. Then it was redundant imo.

I got both at some point, and sold both only to return to the PS2. I wasnt the biggest Nintendo fan, and not a big FPS fan. Felt right at home with the Square RPGs, Tekken ,Ace Combat, DMC, GT etc. Ofcourse GTA and MGS games early.

I agree, absolutely amazing system. It kind of suffered from the Sony early lineup drought, but it did have its bases covered with a diverse lineup, something for everybody. That is sorely lacking from this next-gen launch, its primarily cross-gen stuff and little is actually something only seen on PS5/sX. I too waited till march, my first 2 games were Silent Hill 2 and ATV Offroad Racind (Fury?). They were okay, and the OPM demo discs helped alleviate a good bit of boredom whilst helping to showcase what would come. I'll never forget that first year though man, playing MGS2 demo and full game, in the glow of the Christmas lights. Then GTA 3, it was so surreal, almost dreamlike. Life was starting to grow in pace, as I had been working for a few years at that point(was 18). My friends and I still miss Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance, it was a damn fine game, with fun progression, incredible gfx, and sexy characters. I'd kill to see Sony bring that back, even if it is Champions of Norrath. I'm stunned they've just sat on it, SOE or whoever. With PS3 and 4 the online landscape is rife for bringing back that co-op experience, couch included. Diablo 3 just didn't do it for my friends and I. We preferred Sacred 1 & 2.

But god damn dude! What they achieved with that console is profound. Great rpgs and survival horror too. I wish I still had my beautiful blue box. IMHO this next gen is really lacking that old gen excitement, mystery and hype. I'm still there and hope for the best, but something is definitely off.

Oh yeah, Timesplitters was amazing, my sister and friends would all hang out for hours playing against the max A.I. possible, typically on that Chinatown map, and we'd make it that infection/zombie mode and we'd try to find the best defense, before most horde mode's existed. Tons of playable characters, options, guns, what a game and series.

Has someone here tried to play Sonic Heroes on your PS2?
