Playstation 2 on ps4 performance discussion

I have wanted to try them out, Just to see how they look and run but there isn't really a thread that focuses strictly on how the games are looking and playing.

As far as I know they are about as you would aspect but I figure some have different feelings on this matter than others.

Do some of the games look better or seem to be emulated better than others?

Has anyone noticed any lag, input lag or controls issues that differ from the originals?

How about actual textures. Are there any issues? Flicker, shadow issues or anything different that fans have noticed. Frame rates and af?

To my knowledge ps2 games seemed to hold up quite well with af. How is af on ps4? Added aa?

Any blurring from movement?

I know I've read here that some classics on ps3 had input lag among other issues.

Please share your experience and feelings on the emulation aspects

(US)Dark Cloud has been rocking a solid 60fps for me. Only technical issues I've noticed is a very thin rainbow colored line of pixels in the top left of the screen during most cutscenes. Also had some flickering shadows on a building I placed. Other than that, the game has been running great.

Since there seems to be some reports that the EU versions are worse it would be great if people could include what version they're playing.

I noticed the rainbow line once and awhile to. Only seen one flickering shadow so far. Other than that, rock solid performance.

Mark of Kri runs pretty well most of the time. Get the odd frame rate drop when you face more then three people at a time. I just wish you could control the camera.

Rogue Galaxy has stuttering issues. Doesn't feel smooth at all. Some say it is smooth for them, so I don't know why some are getting smooth gameplay and some aren't.

They are all in 4:3. They really need to add a widescreen option so all games can benefit from that.

Thanks for this, OP. I'm sure I'll cave and buy the GTA games before too long and it would be nice to know how they run.

Does anyone have any comparisons between the Framemeister and the PS4 emulation? I'm wondering if it's worth buying the games on PS4 if I don't have them or use the Framemeister hooked up to the PS2.

I tried Rogue Galaxy and the framerate did not feel good at all (under 30), but I don't remember how the original ran to compare.

Pretty disappointed by all the mixed reports, but I suppose it was to be expected, considering the state of all other current emulation options.

Rogue Galaxy UK, 3hours, stuttered a few times on the first planet. On Juraika for about 45min, now and hasnt stuttered yet. Other than that runs fine.

I'm sure that would require rewriting the game's actual code

For me, Rogue Galaxy llooks clean, crisp, and runs very well. I haven't noticed any framerate issues. Seems to be running at a solid 30fps. No detectable input lag for me either.

I'll post it again but I noticed vertical lines in San Andreas. When playing certain titles on PCSX2 at a higher resolution, this happens:
imagewqrro.jpeg

What Sony did was kinda putting the fragmented picture together so there are no black lines, but you can still see that the picture is split into many vertical parts. Very disappointing to say the least.

I've played the first 15 minutes of vice city (eu version). Seems to run fine, however there is a weird blur effect at times that's noticeable. It's been years since I've seen the original running, so no idea if that was always there (or is simply a side effect of the improved resolution and the led screen over the crt tv's from back in the day).

Hopefully digital foundary will look into it?

Rogue Galaxy EU version.

A little stutter here and there but overall pretty smooth. Graphics are nice and clean, very happy with it overall.

More takes on Rogue Galaxy would be super appreciated. Chances are I'll be buying it regardless, but adjusted expectations are always a good thing. I sold my original copy recently, so I'm totally the market for this sort of thing.

Turn off the "Trails" option in the menu, it worked fine on the PS2 but it looks terrible at this resolution.

Yeah I'm getting random frame rate issues and slow down. The original didn't play like this at all from what I remember.

Either way I'm glad to have it with trophies on PS4. Wish they would have made a little more effort to improve the performance and maybe find a way to get wide screen.

You posted this in another thread. That doesn't make any sense because that is their native format. It would look worse if it was stretched or zoomed to 16x9.

Agree, it runs great. US version here.

Agree with this as well, Rogue Galaxy did not feel good, at least from the 10 mins I played it. US version.

4 hours in and rogue galaxy is running perfectly. Usa version.

This is because the game renders in vertical strips, which IIRC is more efficient for the GS. On the ps2 the spaces weren't visible, but when rendering at a higher resolution they become bigger. PCSX2 solved the issue a while ago, at least for the most part. Any chance you can post a screen shot?

That was pretty common in the original release anyway so maybe it's not all that different.

Just got to try Twisted Metal Black, it looks and runs pretty great as far as I can tell. Weird seeing it with a clearer picture

Anybody want to chime in on War of the Monsters? Does it run in 16:9? Is the frame rate better?

Really interested in buying it but a little cautious after a few negative reports from some of PS2 to PS4 transfers

Thanks for this, OP. I'm sure I'll cave and buy the GTA games before too long and it would be nice to know how they run.

Only bought VC and SA. VC runs great but i see some dips to like 26-27 whereas San Andreas runs at a flawless 30 fps. Both games are 1080p and targeted framerate is again 30 fps. 60 fps would break physics as some stated in another thread. Personally I love it because I haven't played them since 2012, and caught up in the nostalgia.

No, it can be hacked in by the emulator (can be done in PCSX2 on PC). However there can be glitches with some games, and 2D elements like HUDs will be stretched. Personally I think leaving it at 4:3 is the better option.

Nope.

They need to at least provide an anamorphic stretch option so that games with widescreen options can actually use them.

Seems a bit much. Some people saying performance feels different.

I guess some of these games are hard to get a,feel for input lag. Fighters would help a lot.

I didn't see anything on aa and af. Af would be easy to test on certain textures and walls/floors.

stretched ui is not simply a glitch and it will require modifying quite a lot of game code.

was rogue galaxy only in 4:3 in the original?

That's good to know... We all talk about how great pcsx2 as an alternative but it is far from perfect for many games. I forget which game but Timesplitters 2 or 3 was totally unplayable for me on the emulator

Regarding a widescreen option, it's not system level emulator otherwise anything would work with it and we would have got a disc based emulation, they are just lazy ports via emulation.
And they obviously can modify the games just like the GTA games has had stuff removed they can add 16:9 option or have its just display in 16:9.
They just haven't bothered, luckily these games can be updated, if Sony does update with improvements is another thing altogether.

They are displaying 1080p but it isn't native.
And the none 16:9 games are obviously rendering lower and upscaled to 1080p.
In fact any lower and they'll not be far off Pal standard resolution.

Is Rogue Galaxy upscaled to 1080p like the GTA games?

every game is upscaled to 1080p. They internally res somewhere above 720p

They are above HD. They come nowhere close to SD.

Of course, but that's pretty simple.

stretched ui is not simply a glitch and it will require modifying quite a lot of game code.

Stretched UI is a side-effect that can't be fixed, but there may be additional glitches depending on the game.

Just an example how such a widescreen hack would look like (stolen from the PCSX2 forums):

Yeah it just adds what would be showing interest game.

But I'd imagine this won't always work with all games and certain sizes of game area in sure but this looks nice.

Would the games on Ps4 look better setting them to 720 instead of having them upscale to 1080¿ or it simply doesn't make a difference?

Yeah but what is the resolution of those 4:3 games because they're obviously not the same as GTAIII,Vice or San Andreas
1025x768 maybe?

Yeah it just adds what would be showing interest game.

Your TV would just upscale it, unless you have a 720p TV.
