Playstation 3 CFW & Homebrew Technical Help Thread -- morality arguments elsewhere

Well yeah. But there is a considerably large base of people like me who have the older units. Being able to backup my PS2 games would be really nice.
Launch 60gig here, so I'm with you...just not getting my hopes up

Alright, I installed BlazBlue Continuum Shift with Gaia 2.06 on the PS3's internal drive. Whenever I try to boot it from HDD0, it just takes me back to the XMB. I've tried it with the disc in the drive and with it out.

Except where it says:

Zing.
Missed it, I blame Wiki for not being properly organized as it's not on the Security holes section. :P

Not sure that "Zing" is appropriate though as this really has pretty much little to do with the rest.

Once you boot with Gaia it will always take you back to the XMB. You actually have to go to the disc icon (with a disc in the system) and execute the game from there.

Once you are returned to XMB you need to select the disc icon which will load your backup.

A PS2 backup manager would be amazing. That and somehow adding more controller support for PS2 games. I'd love to be able to play Thirdstrike with my TE Stick.
I said as much yesterday...I believe that there is a technical reason that it hadn't yet been implemented but nobody answered.

And then I can take the game out of the drive? How do I know it's running off my install, and not the drive? It says BBCS should work in discless mode.

EDIT

I'd love to see someone come out with an override for locked gamesaves. That would be a godsend.

I need to update the version of MultiMan i'm running, currently on 01.13.01 and looking to jump to 01.14.01, I've noticed it's pretty unstable and I had to restart 3 times last night before I could launch a game.

Do i need to delete the currently installed version(and do I do this by just pressing Triangle on the XMB and then selecting delete) or can I just install the new version?

Put a different game in the drive, I think most backup managers have now disabled Discless modes.

Don't take the game out of the drive but it doesn't have to be the same game as the one you are trying to run.

I just keep the first LBP in my drive unless I'm ripping something else. I run all of my other backups using that disc.

I'm not certain but I believe it's a similar situation to playing GC backups on the Wii. When the PS3 plays PS2 games it goes into "PS2 mode". This mode doesn't have the PS3 OS running in the background so any syscalls (mounting the backup etc.) won't work.

There is an alternative though that requires no CFW and has been around for years. You just need a Swap Magic disk. It's called Open PS2 Loader. I believe it only supports loading backups through USB (at 1.1 speeds) or SMB though.

AH HA! Got it to work. Put SSFIV in the drive and it appears as BBCS. This is awesome. Thanks.

Yes! Thanks for this! I'll check it out a bit more once I'm home...Would it be possible for someone to create a pkg file that emulates what the Swap Magic Disk does?

So if I stay on CFW 3.55 and the Special Edition MvsC3 I get comes in on the 15th and requires 3.56 OFW whats going to happen? Same thing with the Signature Edition DA 2 i have on order for March? With these "rootkits" in 3.56 i'm now a bit scared to upgrade back to OFW and being console or PSN banned. It's almost better to just stay completely disconnect from the internet and on CFW, but i'm worried about being able to play these future games.

No, as it's a PS2 disc.

It takes awhile for games to require a specific FW. MvC3 probably has gone gold so no need to worry about it requiring 3.56. You are pretty much stuck with playing locally for MvC3 though.

Have they defeated the DNS trick yet? I'm surprised that hasn't happened yet.

I think MLB 11 will be 3.56 which is going to put me in a bind. I don't know if I can wait to play that game.

There is very little chance that Sony introduced any new game features in 3.56 and even less of a chance that they managed to get the SDK to developers and get them to use these features. (no games have used features past 3.30 and that was released ~6 months ago)

And as the public keys for 3.56 have already been released you'll just be able to decrypt the eboot.bin, modify the param.sfo and play on CFW 3.55

Staying off PSN and the internet isn't a big deal to me, as long as I can still take my PSP on PSN thats what matters most right now and for PSP2. My whole problem is when this all came about everyone was making it sound like there would be no issues and there would be no way Sony can stop CFW. Now i'm worried that I cannot play any future games period.

I suck at fighting games so wasn't planning on playing online anyways :) Sucks though because i've already accepted I won't be able to collect my Jill and Shuma Gorath DLC or the extras from DA2 signature edition now :( I at least would like to know I can play them.

Thanks for assurance N.A. Appreciate all you've done here and you have been very upfront with everything and one of the good ones.

Usually takes a couple days for the DNS trick to not work. It'll happen though.

It's not too late to downgrade to the regular edition and save yourself $10

Little bit vain but I prefer the cover of the SE plus its a steelbook. On top of that I got it as goldbox deal and when amazon had price drop on it recently they auto dropped my price all the way down to $65 with release date delivery so i'm keeping that :)

Where are people getting the numbers from for the size on the Backup Compatibility list? I just installed Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction and it was much over the posted 17.0GB

Speaking of which, is there an easy way to check the size of a game installed without using FTP and checking the size of the folder on your computer?

multiMAN can do it for you. Highlight the game and press R2.

If you see something that's incorrect feel free to correct it. That's what a wiki is for!

Ah...is it against the rules to link to an official firmware from Sony? I'm about to jailbreak my ps3 (it's on 3.41) and I can't find 3.55 (the sony site now only links 3.56).

It's on the wiki.

Lesson being, read the fucking article that you posted. Don't blame the wiki for your inability to read the article you posted, while acting like an expert.

When did I act like an expert? Maybe you should read the entire conversation instead of jumping on random posts just to attack some one.

1. That part of the discussion had little to do with the points actual being discussed.
2. I said "And afaik they were never exploited."

So please, go act like a dick elsewhere as there's a dedicated thread for this now.

COuld anyone post the DNS trick? My bro aint updating and forgot to DL some demos from the store that he wanted to try.

if im below OFW 3.55, is there any way to update to 3.55 since the system update will take me to 3.56 now?
Yes. You can apply the 3.55 update through the memory stick. the 3.55 file must be in the wiki somewhere.

Settings > Network Settings > Internet Connection Settings > OK > Custom > You Choose > Manual Settings > Auto
> Auto > Do Not Set > Manual > Primary DNS = 67.202.81.137 Secondary DNS = 67.202.81.137 > Automatic > Do Not Use > Enable > X

So, considering this new firmware out..should I go down the route of CFW?
I think the best course of action for you right now is to wait and see what the homebrew community have to say regarding the new FW, and if there are any limitations for CFWs to come.

Media players.
Sweet! Can you use your own retail discs, or do you have to make ISOs out of them? It'd be great if it were the first option, I still have tons of DC games (but my three Dreamcasts broke, and I can't find a cheap working replacement in my local pawn shops).

I wonder if units with 3.55 will start being worth a bit more..

Should keep mine on 3.55 until I need to change. Could be worth an extra $50 or $100 to someone if the 3.56 lockouts stick.

I had little to no interest in using CFW.
I upgraded to 3.56 to play LBP with a friend.

Sony's bullshit hidden in 3.56, however, pisses me off to the point that I'll probably never touch PSN again. I wish I had just done the DNS trick and stayed on 3.55. Hell, the friend I was playing with was on CFW and I was the one who told him how to do the DNS trick to avoid the update.

Not to start a big discussion about this, but may i ask why it pisses you off? Isnt this what both Microsoft and Nintendo also does?

EDIT: From what i gather, this PS3 "rootkit" (i'm not sure if this goes as a rootkit) works in a way so that Sony can change the checks on the fly when connecting to PSN instead of having to release a firmware update each time they want to change these checks (in case someone manages to spoof the checks). It shouldnt really affect anyone other than getting harder to gain PSN access with custom firmware, so personally i dont see anything wrong with it :)

I'm just a bit worried ala the DSi exploit today that vanished only hours later. I wouldn't want a chance for homebrew to be gone on PS3, as I love that fan translations are underway. I hope Yakuza Kenzan gets such treatment down the road. :3

I guess the emulators and backups were not as important for you. Good man. I'm glad you manned up!

Wait...multiMAN supports PS2 games.......
Not as a backup manager. Deank (the guy behind multiMAN) experimented with it, but as far as i know, it didnt work (unless there is some new development on this?).
