Playstation 3 CFW & Homebrew Technical Help Thread -- morality arguments elsewhere

schennmu said:
Are some of you guys going online with CFW? How risky is it?

It seems there's an unwritten rule that if you get CFW on a device with online is to not expect online anymore. :P

Currently it works with some DNS exploit or something, but when that fails, there is currently no surefire way to play online.

I tried to play the Catherine demo but when I launch it they say "you need to update your PSN satus" or something like that (sorry my system is in French so...), how can I do that?! I'm in CF 3.55 and of course I don't wanna update to 3.56...

PS: N.A, yesterday I found a way to play Heavy Rain, I installed it on the internal drive (it was on the external, I forgot about it).
It probably doesn't help but I played it on CFW 3.55. Downloaded using the DNS trick.
So there's no reason for it to ask for an update.

If he restored his backup after installing CFW then he hasnt got shit to complain about.

Wait

Im going through this process of upgrading the internal HDD right now

So i need to be in OFW3.55 to run the restore utility? And only after this re instal the CFW Kmeaw? - Is that what you saying?

No, the restore utility won't backup your backups (xzibit yo), only the stuff downloaded of the psn store and essential files (save files).

Yeah I don't understand... Well I did put my system in English and it says "This content can be used if you renew the license/license in PlaySationStore." and under "Proceed to PlaySationStore"... Yeah they say "license/license". I downloaded it on the wiki. Well I might try the PSN trick but that's weird.

Danielsan was in OFW to start with, he should have restored his backup then gone to CFW to avoid any problems. If you're already in CFW then, well, i don't know tbh but you can't complain about the backup being shitty if it doesnt work, that's all i was saying.

It does. I forgot to delete one game from my HDD before backing it up and it was there after the restore.

The Catherine demo? Yeah, had the same problem. Strangely it needs a activation trough the store.

edit
oops, sorry for the dp.

Yep they say you need to "activate" the content... So basicly you need to download it with your own account, that's pretty stupid.

No, just the activation. If you already installed the demo you just have to hop on the japanese PSN store, start the download and cancel it immediately. It works after that. It's the first demo where I had to do this.

btw
If you guys are interested in some real cool homebrew games you should check ThatOtherPersons blog . Some of his games are already signed for 3.55. The Untitled Project seems to have much potential.

Well, it's not really that strange. It's just the first "normal" (no beta and so on) demo that features the standard DRM used for PSN games etc.
Though I wonder if that means they will do this for all future demos, resulting in no more demos for the homebrew guys (as in the long run you either can't connect to PSN or are banned).

I have a question guys. I just installed the CFW, and I want to give a game a go on it, so I decided to try the Tales of Graces F demo, with the translation patch. I was able to install Gaia Manager, R3volution, and the game but when I try to run R3evolution I get an error message, making it unusable. R3 Revolution is required to run the translation.

Granted, it was made before the new exploits but is there a way to get it working on it?

I'm at a lost here and it's probably right in front of me...

Where can you find the game backup files on the HDD? I can't get into that folder /app_home/PS3_Game (I get an error message), so can you only delete a game via a backup manager?

While I understand that Sony wants and needs to protect the integrity of their system I have to wonder if removing the only legal try before you buy option is such a good move.

Patch doesn't work with new CFW.

If Sony's policy is now to use NPDRM with every demo then it's a stupid decision. Geohot has already proven the NPDRM keys are accessible but didn't release them because the only thing they were good for was decrypting PSN games. Hackers will now have a legit reason for leaking these keys.

Internal: /dev_hdd/Games/
External /dev_usb/Games/

Why would Sony care about people who are accessing their files without authorization? Not only that, it's possible that Sony is losing money on anyone who doesn't download through the store. Don't forget that publishers are responsible for paying for bandwidth.

Oh, bullshits ;_;

I hope that the patch for the final game (if it isn't localized by Namco) or for Vesperia support this CFW. The main reason I went down into the CFW lane was for fantranslations.

Lies, I've been told the only reason there is CFW is for "backups" and emulators. /sarcasm

It actually looks kinda cool. Has anyone else checked it out?

they'll get it working with CFW. It's just the patch came out before the CFW and they probably don't feel like redoing the patch to get it working on CFW.

Alright, so my efforts weren't wasted! :3

I'm leaving in a bit to go pick up a new ps3 from best buy. My question for GAF is, will I have to worry about blocking ports and sitea and what not or if I do absolutely nothing internet based on the system am I fine?

Is he trying to bluff sonys remote check?

Apparently the check isn't even in use yet by Sony's server. They are just checking if it is 3.56 then letting the person on. I guess they could enable it at any time though.

So long as you don't connect to PSN you're fine. You can use the webbrowser by itself just fine.

I spent last night lightly toasted and playing games in FBA. DoDonPachi, Gigawing, Mars Matrix, AvP, 1000 Miglia etc. So, so good.

Thumbs down to the folk who claim CFW for the sake of emulation isn't worth it ("because you can do it on a 10 year old computer"). The PS3 is hands down the most fun system I've ever used for emulation.

Wow, care you explain why? I am always very interested in emulation but always feel letdown by the experience in some way or another. What makes it so good on the PS3?

I really have to hook up my old Xbox again...Until then I wait patiently until all of these PS3 emus have network support.

Will the system automatically update if you hook it up to the internet? Where do I disable automatic sign-in?

Does anyone know if the Netflix disc for Wii works through the Dolphin emulator?

I want to get this working so bad.

huh? I don't understand. There is no working dolphin emulator for ps3 right now.

No, you will be asked to update. It just says something like "a new update is available, would you like to update?", so it doesnt happeneds automaticly :)

To disable automatic sign-in to PSN, i think that you go to the manual 'sign-in' icon (or to the 'account manager' icon if you are already signed in to PSN) and press the triangle button. Then i think you get the option to enable, or at least disable automatic sign-in =)

I think it's a combination of factors, but I don't know if I've quite put my finger on it! In the past I've emulated on PC, original Xbox, Wii, and a multitude of handhelds. I have a bit of an obsession with crisp, unfiltered pixel art, and the GP2X is one of my favourite platforms for it. That little screen makes games like 194x, Metal Slug, DoDonPachi etc snap, crackle and pop. On the PS3 it's like that same snap, crackle and pop has been transferred to a 50" screen, complete with big sound system, couch and more players. Some of the Shmups in particular are a pure assault on the senses.

Having said that, I don't recommend anyone jumps into CFW just for a nostalgia hit. Nostalgia last about three minutes, so that's a fix best gotten on your PC. If you really love the old games though, want to sink some time into them and care about a quality experience, FBA on the PS3 delivers.

What are the chances of me bricking my triple when following the wiki? I haven't done this sort of thing since softmodding my original xbox, and that was pretty simple

No. It prompts for a system update on sign-in to PSN.

Logout of PSN. Sign into PSN, that sign-in mesage window "sign in automatically," uncheck it.

if anyone is having trouble with the display of a game but can here the audio using multiman or gaia after start up with a hdmi, just unplug the hdmi cord and plug it back in. Works with every game. :)

Hopefully the next updates fix the display glitches from multiman.

Looking to upgrade my HDD. I originally had a 400GB drive, but I took it out about a year and a half ago to put it in my Macbook Pro. Now I've got a 120GB in there, but I'm running out of room quick.

What would be the best drive for the PS3. I'm looking for a 500GB drive, but nobody in this god forsaken hell hole of a town (Not so Great Falls, MT) has internal 2.5" drives or a USB drive that I can take apart (its kinda pissing me off).

HDMI is really finicky and prone to burning out... I really wouldn't recommend messing with it like that.

I'm still holding on to the cfw and waiting until and if they can get PSP stuff up and running on it but I wanted to ask real quick if there's any progress yet towards getting back-ups of PS1 games running off internal/external HDD yet? Can we expect either one at all? If there's no chance of either one I probably won't bother with it since I can do that stuff on my PSP. PSP, PS1 stuff and fan translations would be the only reasons I'd be going down the cfw path with my PS3.

There is a psx emulator call PS3SX out for only 3.41. i can personally confirm that xenogears works perfectly on my slim ps3 with that emu under that firmware. the ps3sx emu for 3.55 didn't do jack shit for me (black screen and freezing). I hope someone properly ports that emulator soon. :)

Here's hoping. I haven't heard any good explanation as to why it can't be done. (As opposed the the PS2.)
