PlayStation 5 2019 - BELIEVE

Thought it'd be fun to keep track of why the PS5 is likely releasing in 2019.
Anyone else have anything further to add?

1. Software announcements have not blown out past 2019 even with the latest E3.
2. PS5 devkits are rumoured to have been sent to third party devs in 2018.
3. Next-gen games were shown at E3. (One year prior to PS4's release was when saw the first PS4 games)
4. AMD has said 7nm will be rolled out next year.
5. PS3 and Vita games are planned to be dropped from PS+ next year.
6. Sony stated PS4 is in it's final phase of life.
7. Sony showed a graph for expected Playstation sales conveniently leaving out the March after 2019.
8. 2019 will be the PS4's 6th year which falls in line with PS1 and PS2's length.
9. Bink has released support for a new unidentified platform.
10. Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 2019 is for "Multiple Next Gen" Platforms, job listing suggests
11. No PSX 2018 Event

I personally don't want to see PS5 in 2019. I believe PS4 still has plenty of life in it.
 
I know this probably isn't a popular opinion on here but I don't want to see nextgen hardware before 2020, I could even wait for more.
 
Keep dreaming. The PS5 will not hit before 2021. This is good bait for a long thread with a ton of discussion, specs and dates being thrown about, however, so please have at it.
 
Late 2019 is fine. There's still plenty to play and I don't bother with a console in year one anyways as it builds a library.
 
Come work with the game industry's brightest on a new, exciting, unannounced title for multiple next gen platforms.

This is out of a job posting infinity ward put up for next years call of duty. Grain of salt as usual.

It seems logical and reasonable that we'll see the PS5 in 2019 (holiday / winter time frame).

The rest of the respondents in this thread so far, and to a certain extent myself included, are getting caught in some feelings of what I'll call "console fatigue". We've bought the PS4 Pro, maybe an Xbox One X or a Switch, perhaps recently but definitely in the past two years as the Pro hasn't even been out that long. We are the enthusiasts - the people that have the highest statistical probability of having purchased multiple console platforms, some (like myself) even all of them.

What used to be a long-term value proposition for the past 5 or so console generations is now turning into an annual or bi-annual outlaying of cash if you want to keep on the cutting edge and people are rightfully upset about that.

Personally, I don't care when it comes out as long as it has backwards compatibility - let me carry my existing library of games forward and I'll be your customer from day one. Otherwise, even as an enthusiast I'm going to wait a year or so for you to get your shit together.

The PS3 and Xbox 360 were anomalies to last that long, most consoles last about 5-6 years and people say that pretty much every generation that there is still life in them. That is because by the third year or so developers have really gotten to the metal of the hardware but technology still moves forward. The CPU will continue to be a bottleneck. It will be mid 2019 at the earliest and late 2020 at the latest.
 
I concur with the "too soon" opinions here -- I think the PS4 is in a great place right now, there's no reason to undermine it so soon in favor of an an expensive hardware launch imo. The signs are there that Sony is working on it, but it really makes no sense to release it next year.

Also, the previous console cycles were so drawn out because of changing technological infrastructure, streaming, and digital downloads becoming the norm.

I feel the Pro and X could extend the generation a little longer. I would not mind them sticking around a little longer. They were expensive machines. 2020 would feel like a good time to move on to me. Anything later then that would feel like the generation is dragging on too long.

I would not be surprised to see a Fall 2019 release though.
 
I've thought about this and I've come to the conclusion, bring it on, I say.

I wonder if the long life of the PS3 and 360 actually had something to do with the Great Recession?

Just when we might have gotten have gotten new consoles in 2009/2010 was when the world's economy was tanking, ensuring not many were going to want to be spending 400$ on things.

Instead both Sony and Microsoft tried to extend the lives of their consoles by introducing motion controls, which went over like a lead balloon.

At any rate people thought that was the new normal, but no, a console lifespan is around 5 to 6 years, the 360's life span of 8 years was a fluke that will probably never be repeated.
 
The PS4 is still killing it and Sonys main titles are still PS4-based; I see no reason for 2019 and id place money on Winter 2020.

Why are we rushing this? What experiences are we really missing? I've been enjoying Crash Bandicoot on Switch this week so I'm clearly not the target here.

The life of prior gen consoles don't end as soon as a new gen is released though...Even if a PS5 release in 2019 you'd still be getting prominent releases on PS4 for at least 2 more years (2021)....and that would mean at least 8 years for PS4...
 
I'd be more inclined to believe GTAVI is coming out next year than PS5. I want to believe, but here's my thoughts:

1. Kingdom Hearts 3 is coming out in January. You're going to have to rebuy the game on PS5
2. Final Fantasy VII Remake was teased for PS4 with ShenMue 3. How can 1 out of 2 games not come out on PS4? Isn't that a downgrade to have multiple copies on PS4/5
3. Why so many rereleases? It's a triple A storm this gen, more so than last. We are bound to get remaster after Remaster.
4. Why no GTAVI? I picture GTA coming out late 2019 or 2020. Then do what they did with V and Remaster it.
 
The only way I would see Sony rushing to get PS4 out next year is if Microsoft was thinking on releasing next year as well. Otherwise I don't see why. They are doing well in the sales realm and HW could only get cheaper.

I think that we will start seeing annual hardware revisions at some point but not yet.
 
I firmly believe in a late 2019 release for the PS5...a lot of signs pointing to that. Most recently the CoD job posting for Infinity Ward stating their game would be on next gen and their release is next year. But I also think without getting any release date windows for LoU2, GoT, and Death Stranding, that these games are being prepped to be cross gen titles and available at launch or soon after for PS5. Sony will need to entice people to make the jump early on and these games would certainly help. PS4 has plenty of life and will be supported for some time to come without doubt for people not ready to upgrade. As for being rushed?? As long as the components Sony wants inside are available why wait? Rumors suggest Sony was working with AMD from the get go on a custom 7nm so that could possibly go into production next year.

Also, reports are suggesting 2020 for the next Xbox and Phil Spencer stating at E3 that they will once again "deliver the benchmark in console gaming". This tells me he knows Sony is beating them out of the gate which will allow Microsoft to take advantage of the extra time to develop a more powerful console. Very similar to what we have now with the X vs Pro.

We get annual releases in just about every form of tech out there, I don't know why getting a console every few years is shocking to some. This generation has been very successful and still to this day people are buying consoles at a fast rate. So why wouldn't Sony or Microsoft take advantage of that? You don't wait until the fire is out to throw in a new log, you throw in a new log to keep the fire going.
 
If it has complete retro compatibility, I will more than gladly welcome it in November 2019. If not, delay that shit til 2021
 
I just now got a 4K TV, now gotta get a PS4 Pro sometime.

I also think it's too early for PS5 but just having an announcement in 2019 for a later year would be good.
 
Hoping for 2020 too myself. I won't be a day 1 though for the first time since the SNES. I'm going to see how the handle BC first. It's never been important till now for me
 
If dev kits have only been out in 2018, there is really not enough time for developers to get used to the new kit this year, much less actually developing a PS5 game and expecting it to be out in 2019. Sony can afford to miss 2019 and wait for 2020 with the advantage of cheaper hardware as well as better tech.

Didn't the devs get ps4 dev kits with about the same lead time? Don't see why it would have that big of a learning curve if the architectures are relatively the same. There was a Sony employee on here awhile ago saying don't worry about backwards compatibility. So that makes me think that it has a lot in common with the ps4. It's not going to be like going from ps3 to ps4.
 
If true I'm hoping AMD is able to produce a GPU in time that is notably better than what they did previously(their jump from 28nm to 14nm was moderate at best).

If they're not able to do so, then in graphically demanding games the GPU could quickly become the bottleneck in next-gen console(s).

I'm literally just getting financially stable enough to buy a PS4 and now I'm hearing PS5 is on the way? Fuck me...
 
It's nice to have disposable income.
Let's me get excited for all the new platforms.

I'll take several of each and resale all the dupes that are flippable to finance the ones I keep.
 
Sony may try for 2019 but I think MS will shoot for 2020 or later. I know the conventional wisdom is that MS has to release before Sony but we heard the same talk in the lead up to the mid gen consoles. Pro was supposed to drop first and become the de facto 4k console that left MS no room to release one. But all MS had to do was whisper 6TF to completely overshadow the launch of the Pro. I can see MS doing the same for the next gen consoles because I do not believe they will surrender the power advantage. They will whisper specs significantly more impressive than PS5 to overshadow that launch and drop XB2 6 to 12 months later. The interesting part will be Sony's response. When the Pro was launched Cerny refused to say 4.2TF because of the 6TF elephant in the room and just focused on HDR. Will he refuse to discuss the PS5 specs at its launch if MS pulls the same stunt? In fact when I think of it that way it makes a lot more sense for Sony to wait for 2020 right? Why let MS do that a second time?
 
Why people are hurry to bring ps5 in 2019? why can wait in 2021?

Just sit in the coach and enjoy ps4 for christ sake.

GTA VI comes out in 2019 and then re release on PS5 in 2020.

E3 2019 will get a blow out on PS5 though. I pretty much think 2019 will be the last hurrah for the PS4 and then it will mainly be cross platform games till its phased out.

The fact that 2019 is so light for Sony does have to make you wonder.

You got to be kidding me!!! How long do you think it take to create quality game? Even game like AC or COD takes at least a year to develop. So if new console comes out every year then by time a developer done creating their game a new console is already out. How can you think that good idea for both consumer and developers?
 
I think I've come around to the idea of next gen starting in 2019. It seems very likely that the new systems will be able to play PS4/XB1 games natively, so there will still be years of releases for current gen games while also getting tastes of the future and you can do it all on one system.

There is absolutely no way the PS5 is released in 2021 or later. Sony's financial predictions say that the gaming division will start to earn more money again in 2021. (It will decline up to that point) You don't earn more money when you are launching, or preparing to launch, a new console. You only start to earn more money after that console has been released. That means the PS5 will release in 2019 or 2020.

The conservative bet for Sony would be to release in 2020 when costs have come down as the technology matures. However that comes with the downside of giving up a year's advantage and allowing the next Xbox to release alongside the PS5 in 2020. While waiting until 2020 saves on cost, it will lose market share. The other option is to subsidize the PS5 and release it in 2019. The year's head start would give the PS5 the best chance to carry over the market dominance of the PS4. In the long run that is likely to earn more money for Sony than would be lost by subsidizing the PS5 for a year so that it could release in 2019.
 
AMD saying 7nm is available next year doesn't mean 7nm is available for consoles next year(consoles are price sensitive and being aggressive in the process node is expensive).
RAM prices next year will still be expensive, less than now but 2020 will see $/GB tumble.

2019 is possible but much less likely than 2020.
