PlayStation 5 as media player.

I used my PS4 as media player before , Netflix, amazon, YouTube and others, works well.

Now with the PlayStation 5 I feel that the quality is kinda bad....
Blurays, Apple TV, Netflix... none of them go Dolby Vision. And SDR content have strange color profile.

build in TV app works a lotttt better than PS5 app.

anybody else have the same issue?
I saw some YouTube videos that every time u watch sdr or HDR content (not games) you should change the ps5 output settings :/

For DV yes, TV apps are often the best (see LG, but even 1080p Blu-Ray have an overall quality and definition that trades blows with and beats the best streamed 4K content I have seen (LG up scaling is not half bad, but it is the bitrate that makes up the difference).

Yeah, Sony is still not on the Dolby Vision bandwagon for PlayStation for some odd reason even though their TVs support it. Xbox Series X has PS5 beat when it comes to this with DV support along with various home theater friendly audio codecs (Atmos, DTS:X).

My Samsung 4K HDR TV does 4K Netflix much sharper then using Netflix from the PS5. But I don't think that's necessarily the fault of PS5.

I had the same thing happening when I used the XB One X for Netflix 4K content too. Same goes with Disney+.

I wonder why that is?

I do not think XSX supports DV for Blu-Ray, but only for games.

To be fair for streaming I use the TV app, what's the point on booting up the PS5 when it's a click away, for 4k blu ray it'll do until I get a dedicated to player, but Dolby Vision I ain't too bothered about simple because not everyone uses it even with 4k Blu-ray's
It's nice to have but, I'll live.

Most apps use a default setting that's oversaturated, bright, and sharp. If you've fine tuned the hdmi settings for the input with game mode, etc the settings for the apps will be different until also tuned.

I believe you are correct about the UHD player (I haven't used it yet, but that was the case on the Xbox One X as well), however the streaming services support Dolby Vision. The ones I know of off the top of my head, because I use them are: Netflix, Disney+, Vudu, Amazon Prime Video. HBO Max is supposed to start supporting it when Wonder Woman 1984 comes to the service on Christmas.

Are your consoles set to output in 4k?

Sure, but I used to use the console streaming app and now I do not see any point in it anymore. They are all web apps and the LG WebOS is popular enough to get decent apps ported to it and it is the best tuned for the TV...

I guess the point of the console apps would be audio if you do not have eARC as the console could go through the AVR, but then an AVR without eARC (or a TV without it) kind of defeat the point of the HDMI 2.1 features these new consoles are packing...

I thought you had to pay for it to be used with Blu Ray movies?
Maybe, but all the reports I read so far (DF, HDTVTest, etc...) said it was just missing for Blu-Ray playback.

I have been watching the MCU series back to back (not in one night lol) and it was an eye opener to watch Endgame one night on Disney+ and Far From Home on 1080p Blu-Ray and... well... kind of preferring the 1080p upscaled Blu-Ray version... Bitrate matters, it matters a lot. I cannot prepare myself for UHD-Blu Ray movies enough haha.

Apps on consoles being an issue isn't a surprise I like to game on them, I'm curious if SONY will address 3rd party app issues. You don't want the narrative that your video game console isn't good with streaming apps.

It is coming for games in 2021, but no word yet on DV for 4k video playback. So the compromise is to use streaming apps for playback that support it. I hope that all this comes for 4k Disk support to both consoles at some point.

Netflix has better image quality on PS5 than on Nvidia Shield in 4K HDR. That surprised me.

Aren't things like Netflix, etc built directly into pretty much every modern television? It's time for game consoles to once again start focusing solely on games once again.

How does the PS5 do at playing UHD blurays? I currently have the One X and i'm looking at my options for jumping over.

So much misseed potential, ps4 was a poor media player and ps5 is barely better.

If the quality and feature list of gaming consoles as media players continues it's current trajectory, by the time we have PS8 it will have near feature parity with an entry level Windows 7 laptop.

for some reason consoles play apps like shit for me on my tv, i think cuz it stays in game mode maybe. I use my apple tv and get better picture from it

It's because the PS5 is trash and forces HDR on everything. Why they don't let you toggle to enable HDR only for HDR content is beyond me.

Do you have an LG OLED? If not there is no issue, just set it to auto in your TV and PS5.

If you do have an LG OLED then its LG's fault for not adding an auto option for Game/PC mode really.
i have an lg oled, ill check this video out shortly. But my system goes to game mode auto, is that not good?

Use an Apple TV for media, it truly leads the pack in simplicity, usability, and image quality.
The PS5 is too power hungry and clunky to use for this purpose.

You can just keep your "black level" on low and in the PS5 video settings, set it to limited and not worry about games or watching media. If you want the best dynamic range in HDR games you must set your TV settings "black level" to high and the PS5's to limited. Watch the video still though because I might have gotten things mixed up as I dont own an LG OLED.

TV is media player, PS5 is game player.

This is the Way.

If you want the best multimedia experience beyond gaming, I'd recommend an Apple TV 4k. I can stream my MacBook or iPhone to it, play any app, and cast games from my iOS devices and seen them on the big screen. Was playing Baldur's Gate 2 on my iPad on my TV the other day.

He said do auto on the tv and auto on the system but my c9 doesn't have auto black level :(
He says don't do auto ps5 and low black level but that's what I'm at

edit. He posted a comment on the video. I probably should put mine into pc mode then I get the auto

I currently use my Xbox One X as a "media" player for my usb thumbstick that I have ripped my movies to, etc.

From my understanding Sony hasn't formatted the PS5 yet to enable usb media sticks to play. Can anyone else confirm?

Going from my Xbox One X to PS5 in terms of movie/tv app quality, IMO the PS5 has much better image quality. Personally
I can see a pretty big difference in colors, brightness, etc. Of course, everyone's eyes are different. 👍

The 4k blu-ray playback on the PS5 has been fine as well. The only minor complaint is when I play a disc and I get a giant "play" arrow
at the beginning that stays on for like 4-5 seconds which is annoying.

Then just set PS5 to limited and keep your LG on low and you won't have to worry about it again. When playing games in HDR it will send out an HDMI RGB Range of "Full" otherwise, which won't match your TV's setting of Low. Media (DVDs, BD, etc) will also send out a low range so thats fine with how the TV is setup.

You are forcing the PS5 to send a Limited/Low signal because the LG doesn't have an Auto option for Black Level. Auto on the PS5 won't match what the TV has set (Either Low of High in your case) because it can't know what the TV is doing, so it chooses what it thinks is best for the current content (SDR Games, HDR games and SDR/HDR media) and assumes the TV will be set to Auto and recognise that the signal is Limited or Full and change the BLack Level setting to Low or High respectively but LG chose to remove Auto in Game/PC mode so you have to do it manually.

Technically you are going to get a better image if you swap your TV settings from Low to High when you play HDR games (Which is everything on PS5 now really) and back when you watch media. Its not going to be a bad image when its set to Limited on PS5 and Low on the TV, by any stretch of the imagination (I can only have Limited/Low in HDR games on my TV due to HDMI 2.0 instead of 2.1), so I wouldn't even worry about it personally.

If you never watch media on the PS5 then just set the TV to High and the PS5 settings to Full. Hope that clears it up.~

edit - I just read your addition saying he said PC mode has Auto, well there you go, just set it to Auto in both the TV and PS5 settings and you're gravy.

Because the hardware on TVs are not nearly good as they are on consoles. TV apps will slow down and in 5 years or so after the TV came out, they cannot keep up latest additions to the Apps. Example, I have a 7 year old Sony TV that does a terrible job on streaming apps now compared to when it first came out. My OG Xbox One though has no issues running any streaming app.

My newer Sony TV (3 years old) still does the streaming apps well, but compare its responsiveness to my Xbox Series X, PS4, Xbox One X, or even the new Google Chromecast TV and it is not nearly as good. Do not rely on the software on these "smart" tvs to be able to keep up with changes. Also, unless you are buying a top of the line TV, the video scaler and processors are a lot better in consoles than in the TVs.

Also, being able to stay on one device is a huge plus.

As for your comment about HDMI 2.1, most TVs and AV receivers do not support HDMI 2.1. It is going to be a while before they are more common. I am holding off buying my projector until there is more HDMI 2.1 support out there for the model I want.

The C9 is still recent enough to have good quality streaming apps in terms of decoding quality and I see all streaming apps being updated regularly. In 3-4 years I hope PS5 or XSX streaming apps/multimedia support has improved considerably by the time LG stops supporting those apps.

HDMI 2.1 support in receivers is why I have connected both PS5 and XSX to the TV and using ARC (standard so only 5.1 bitstream inputs :/) from TV to receiver.

Then we can talk about the superior Blu-Ray option ;).

Audio is more important to me than a few games that support 120 fps, so if my TV supported 120 fps, but I could not stream down lossless audio from the Blu-Ray players, I would still be connected to my audio receiver.

Remember when home theater stuff was a lot easier? Just plug in RCA cables or an optical cable and you are good to go. HDMI was supposed to make things better and easy, but then they keep upgrading the damn specs on it! The quality is so much better, but it can be hassle if you want to stay up to date with everything.

It is not just 120 Hz for games, but for PS5 and XSX it is about unlocking HDMI 2.1 bandwidth and thus 10 bit HDR at 4K@60+ Hz with RGB instead of YUV 420. Audio quality is still much more than decent enough since I do not have ATMOS speakers and only a 5.1 setup (Q-Acoustics speakers and Denon AVR-X2300W).

😂 yeah, I started with RGB SCART then enjoyed NTSC composite a few years later when I moved. Doing the component jump for the OG Xbox was like removing a thick Vaseline filter from Morrowind... QuincuxAA did not help already, but composite made a bad situation much much worse. From then it is a race to have everything matching and working properly and when you update one component you risk wrecking the balance :).

I'm not noticing much of a difference in quality but my previous TV (now packed up) was only 1080p and the TV i'm using now is 720, lol

that said, speaking of apps I noticed the other day that hte built in game streaming feature on ps4 was ditched and now you have to use twitch. Bah

All I know is it runs faster then PS4. No slowdown or slight clunkynes slike the PS4 OS.
Plus I like having youtube, Netflix at a touch of a button on the PS5 remote

There was a time when consoles was the best for media playback but now you can just get small media devices like Chromecast With Google TV or any other up to date devices for under $100 and have a better media player.

You're much better off getting a streaming box like apple tv 4k, or Nvidia Shield if you don't have good internal apps on your tv. they use less power, have support for dolby vision/hdr10 and frame rate switching.

yup
LG Oled C9
The netflix app on the c9 is very good. It's capable of matching framerate and switching to dolby vision/hdr without hdmi handshake blankouts. You should just be using the internal apps on netflix, disney +, Prime Video ect. The webos plex app sucks though.
