PlayStation 5 Reveal on June 4th Postponed

Let me gently translate this:
“We were going to do the reveal this week, but since press is focused on other stuff, it’ll get less coverage. Also, marketing team said that putting a #blacklivesmatter and expressing hurt has a positive impact on our online communities. No worries though! in a couple of days, and in the same world where police crimes will keep happening elsewhere outside our main market, and unjustices like world wide corporations using slave manufacturing to reduce a dollar per unit will still be the thing, will resume reveal for you!”.

Look, I'm not in the States, nor really keeping up with the news (cos news is mostly depressing), but I get that whats going on is a BIG DEAL.

So I could understand the decision if it wasn't for the fact that this is happening in their biggest market and this conference wouldn't garner the requisite news bites on the nightly news. Yeah, I'm a cynical bastard.

This will blow up in their face if shit gets leaked.

Bullshit. Those voices needing to be heard didn't just pop into existence over the past week. They've always been there, and they've always needed to be heard, yet that never stopped Sony from running any of their events. What's different this time around? There's a very real chance current events will adversely affect media coverage of their console reveal, that's what's different.

From a PR standpoint it does make sense. Big risk everything gets overshadowed by some development in the protests. Or God help them if one of the games features a cop

People are being purposefully obtuse pretending this is just about one man’s death. It’s about the civil unrest gripping cities all over the world right now. It’s not just because a man was murdered. Shit’s a little crazy right now on the streets.

example:

We should cancel every entertainment event anyone is murdered by a bad person. Since that happens every day, let's just shut down society and sit around being emo forever.

They stated it's not a proper time for "celebration"...which is not logical at all. The PS5 event is not meant to be a celebration. This is technology related news that happens to bring people together in a positive way. That's exactly what we need right now. I honestly think this makes the overall situation worse.

Reading through some of these comments, there's a lot of discussion about some riots in America. I can't believe they canceled the entire event due to a non news worthy situation on the other side of the planet that will not be reported on outside North America.

I can't remember that they shut down events when other tragic events happened in the past, so why should this be any different?

I don’t think it’s fair to compare these situations as equals, while any life lost is tragic, there was a lot of build up tension with the death of George Floyd plus with the country just slowly re-opening from an on going and still legitimate threat of the COVID-19 virus, it was a perfect recipe for a lot of people who had so much pent anger toward the government on their handling and obvious racial tensions thats only gotten worse with police brutality.

I mostly agree, it was a joke regarding the "Sony waiting for world peace to announce the Ps5" comment I was quoting.

With that said, I don't like the whole "there's more important stuff going on" angle. There's always more important stuff than videogames going on, always. There's always some war, armed conflict, terrorist attack, oppressive government making people disappear, people dying of hunger or illnesses that should be preventable/treatable, etc. Less than 24 hours ago more than 30 people got killed in a market in Burkina Faso and let's be honest, no one gives a shit. I didn't even hear about it, just googled "dozens killed" and used the past 24 hours filter.
I get why they won't delay an event because of some killing in a third world country, because it's not really a relevant market to them and we are so used to hearing about violence from those places that it won't be big news and it won't interfere with their marketing/message.

But they can fuck off with the "more important things going on" comment.

Except their game which you shoot dogs and very detailed cut of people’s throats is releasing in 18 days.

So, if they didn't delay the event that means they were somehow disrespecting the 'cause'? Man, what a time to be alive.
Read the first page of this thread.
I already said the delay is unnecessary. There's another post of mine in here where I said the delay is an overreaction.

Maybe read the thread first?

I remember the day Princess Diana died and the football was cancelled. Sometimes shit happens. It's a bit frustrating but that's all it is. I do, however take issue with the message itself. 'Allow more important voices to be heard', no I'm sorry. None of these voices are attempting to be heard. Who's voice? Who is talking? Who has the manifesto or the political initiatives to embed?

They are in the streets rioting, burning and destroying communities and businesses. And this message, like many others, has a clear undertone of acceptance and support. The shit needs calling out and stopping. Cancel the event, but at least have the balls to say during this time when people's livelihoods are being destroyed, innocent people are becoming victims of riots and having their property/businesses looted and decimated we've decided now is not the right time for celebration.

People need to be very careful legitimising this behaviour or making carefully crafted statements that make it appear as though they support civil unrest just to protect the brand, because if it's not stopped or de-escalation not pursued this is only going one way and then the shit is really going to start.

You do realize MS also does it, right? Same as other companies.

People getting worked up over the delay are truly pathetic. Lol
That is the other side of the coin, Sony gets to be in control of things they shouldn't have any power of.
If Microsoft goes ahead with their presser they would automatically be deemed the bad guy, why - because big boss Sony controlled the pace.
As I said Sony is having double standards here, in plain words they are saying Y lives is more important than Z lives - otherwise they would have canned their E3 show in when homo sexuals got killed.
If you do not see the problem here then you really are fucked up and I am talking to you directly because I know you tend to have a hissy fit when something negative about Sony is said so your post is hypocritical.

Don't know where you are but its all over the news here in the UK, and protest have started to form in London.

With protests being all over America I would assume travel is impacted. While it sucks it seems logical decision.

Sorry, it was more of a retorical question, or at least not solely directed to your person, based on the decision to delay.
But yeah, overreaction is a understatement, it makes 0 sense but ey, thats my opinion.

Hong Kong protests, thousands of people getting killed in other countries, nothing. But muh marketing will be impacted by news covering something else. Better postpone because of Murica for the entire world.

Bunch of comments here are embarrassing. If you are already saying that murders happen every day worldwide, then every company in every business segment should postpone the conference every day. Yes, there was a murder, but the protests are certainly not at such a level elsewhere as in US. The Yellow Shirts protest in France 2 years ago are nowhere near close what is happening now across the US. Compared to US, it's peace of cake. People are going at the job carring guns to protect themselves, people are scared for their own property and now they are try to defend it with weapons because thieves and vandalist. Just saw on twitter that actor John Cusack was attacked by police for no reason. Shit is real. You'll get your conference and games one day. Just wait till dust settles.

I understand why they do this.

But on the other hand, just so my expectations are reasonable, are we waiting for world peace before any type of reveal?

There is a bright side about Corona + the riots, they cancel each other out in some ways.
No full theater that they can burn down because COVID is keeping most in their homes, so there's that.
Also the guy was a porn star named big floyd, now ya'll know - thank 4Chan. :messenger_winking:

The current events in the United States would have overshadowed Sony and its PS5, so it's not the right time for a communication around the console, the Americans have their heads elsewhere at the moment, in short this postponement is marketing, nothing to do with solidarity, don't be naive.

The unfortunate thing is that there are much worse cases happening elsewhere in the world every day (example: the Palestinians) and yet they have never done so much.

In short, hypocrisy.

these are just a few videos of what black people are upset about. Also take into account how racist and horrible past generations have been to them, telling them theyre too dirty for our bathrooms and that they can’t even use the our libraries or schools. Redlining and keeping them from owning property. A lot of them have had to unjustly grow up in poverty or their parents had to.

Also keep in mind many white Antifa types have joined in and done plenty of destruction themselves (and to the movement).

the more our history comes to light, the more we can realize there’s been a major problem. I’m not asking you to promote looting, but to have some discernment and compassion.

I’ll end with this.

And this just isn't a US based problem, this racism is all over the world as well and I know everyone is all pissy about not getting to see the PS5 on Thursday, but in the end it is just a game system, right now this movement needs the loudest voice it can have and I totally understand delaying the event right now, it's not the end of the world to wait a smidge longer, the game system isn't going anywhere. I know horrible shit happens all over the world as well and not just in the US, but right I feel there is a real chance for something to change for the better, this type of prejudice has gone on just way too long both here and abroad. I know I am going to catch a ton of flack, but just show some compassion and try to put yourself in their shoes right now...

Figures. When you've got Wells Fargo execs or Nike commenting on the mistreatment of people, you know the corporate world is going to use this tragedy to enhance their image.
Corporate virtue signaling at its finest. LOL

In all seriousness, It's understandable why they'd postpone. But I think they should've just stayed neutral on the situation, and not take sides like they did.
