PlayStation begin rolling out age verification checks

Do you have to do this just to play on the platform or does it only count if you are online? Ive cancelled my playstation plus and do not plan to resub so its essentially an offline console. Do I have to still do this?

I'd just rather not use the communication features. If they put cloud saves behind this then that's going to result in my PS+ being cancelled forever.

Very happy. They had my information since the first time i bought something with my VISA (same as all of you who bought something), so for me its all the same, now is a safer environment

When I provide my credit card to PlayStation, I do not have to verify my age or even enter my birth date. You can believe it is safer if you want, but systems getting hacked is going to become more frequent and this is more information that will be sold across the dark web. Now they will have my photo ID? That's not safer to me.

Sony already has being hacked before hence why they plea for people to change their passwords and email accounts. This won't change nothing other than more personnal info getting in the hands of the hacker.
Honestly I think this guy is feign ignorance.

Try critizising the government - jail.

Every time a company says they aren't storing my info I "Press X to doubt".

Too many times companies were caught redhanded with our info to not raise an eyebrow every single time.

This.
Neogaf should be a tech enthusiast forum, but even here there's still lots of people not worried or concerned about the implications of these kind of policies, and tbh I thought at least on this niche of audience we were in a better place at this point

Exactly. This is especially true when corporations and governments are now relying on this same proof that hackers will be targeting in the future. What are we accomplishing by providing more information that will be used to "verify" when some jackass who claims to be me or you? Governments won't back down when shit hits the fan. They will find "better solutions". Next up.....forced biometrics.

Dont they give the option to verify your age by text message? Anyone that is protecting they account with a 2 step verification already gave they cellphone number. So why are ppl pretending the only way to verify the age is by doing a face scan or sending them an ID? I would never send a copy of my ID to a corporation, but thats not the only option.

I've never had to provide my age at all for a service. Only when obtaining a credit card or something like that. But yeah....this is just a overreach, imo. We are talking about video games. This is a parent's job. Not the government's.

I am talking specifically with regard to video games, which is the topic of this thread. Why are you making irrelevant comments in response? Did I say anywhere the Middle East is good? What my post in fact implies is that the Middle East is extremely restrictive and that we in Europe have become more restrictive than the Middle East in this one regard. I have made an unfavourable comparison with the Middle East for a reason - that reason being that the Middle East is very restrictive.

Yeah, I live in Brazil and I tried to watch a fucking Youtube app and Playstation already asking stuff.

Time to play games while logoff of my Playstation account. I can watch Youtube on my notebook because ADblock.

My time with this Playstation 5 is almost over for me. Really thinking of selling my PS5 and get a Nintendo Switch 2.

Wouldn't the same regulation apply to Switch 2 that applies to PS5?

I don't use social media and I don't play games on online or send messages on my consoles so I have so far been able to avoid the age verification here in the UK. In fact, the reality is that I can still do everything I can still use my console and my PC exactly the same as I could before all this Online Safety Act and Age Verification nonsense.

Microsoft have been harassing me every couple of months for about a year to verify my age, or else no comms privilege. Stupid local laws apply globally now I guess. Thanks, UK government!

Europe have always been a land of soyboys and carebears. People getting phone calls from their ISP demanding to stop pirating/torrenting - OR ELSE - I couldn't believe this when I heard such stories, but apparently you can even get a huge fine in some countries if you do that? And those people claim they have "freedom" lol.
Canada as well. I remember my Dad freaking out on me way back in the day when I downloaded a movie because our ISP sent him an email. I was like pops... relax, they cant do shit. Unfortunately that is soon to change with Bills C9 and C22 in Canada. Who looks at UK and says 'yeah lets do some of that'?

This is some real bullshit, they can suck my balls. I created my PSN account before it was called PSN during the PS2 era. I'm not verifying shit.
Good plan. That way they will have to do this age verification before they will be allowed to suck you balls. We'll see how they like having to do that!

Well.. In today's society you can Identify as whatever you want and no one is supposed to be allowed to question it...
So...

I Identify as: Age verified.

They already have your face and data, all they want. If you have social media and you shared your bank data they already have both. They actually sell your data between each other

You gave social media apps your bank information? lol....you do you

Don't have social media. They don't have any info about me from my bank other than what I need to buy something. At what point do they have 'my face' and why should they need it?

People in general just don't care about online privacy or anonymity. If they did social media would have never become a thing. Everyone would stop using google and other services that profile you and monitor everything you do.

After some Mexican bought subsribtion to Netflix using my debit card data - I never, ever leave my DC data anywhere (anymore).

Netlix don't even have option to delete CC/DC data, you have to contact customer service. Now I just use one time verifications using Bank system available here (Blik) whenever I can and when I can't - I use PayPal, deleting my DC info after every transaction. They can...
