Playstation Home is where the idiots gather

My take on home is that it looks mildly interesting, and it's taking a crapload longer to come out than it was supposed to. Frankly, I'd rather they had expanded the effort on putting this stuff in the XMB and then porting it to Home, instead of the other way around.

Looks pretty, though.

Custom in-game music, in-game XMB, and achievements. NOW!

These things don't require a virtual ghetto.
FFS keep achievements the hell off my ps3. The last thing online gamers need is a virtual cock to wave at each other.

If you just want Xbox, then stick to Xbox. God forbid Sony go in their own direction

You have a point, but an important part of community-building is providing a mechanism to show what games people own or have played.

I hope they have a relatively small number of trophies to unlock in each game that are sort of goofy. The kinds of things where you can hop into your trophy room 3 years from now and have a laugh about some stupid thing you did a long time ago. Especially multiplayer-based awards would be good for "remember the time we..." nostalgia.

I disagree...inordinate pride in players always takes me back to quartering up at Circus Circus.

Achievements = good (Games like Uncharted, R&C, Resistence have them and you get cool extra features/options with them)
Gamerscore = bad

I would like a way to have what you've accomplished easier to see, which is why trophies seem like a cool idea

Your Home character should gain 3 pounds for every achievement you earn, so we can see who the real hardcore gamers are

Gamerscore is what really gets the dickwaving going. It has its roots in the arcade high score scene, which was always quite a dickwaving contest even on a local level. Taking it worldwide has not helped.

Achievements would be perfectly fine, and have been present in many games going back to the beginning of the hobby. Have a little trophy case with them to admire, and you're all set.

I expect people will come around on achievements once they're not so closely attached to the concept of gamerscore. Twill be a miraculous event, like rumble becoming good again.

If you read my post you realized that I provided my personal analysis on whether virtual worlds in general continue to be in the public eye. In my opinion, they are not like they used to be. The opportunity to ride on the coattails of that groundswell and break beyond it has been lost for Home. Can it do that on its own? Of course it can, but it's job would have been a hell of a lot easier when there was more mainstream media and mainstream consumer interest in virtual worlds in general.

That which I've described (the "15 minutes of fame is over") is the current reality regarding media coverage and marketing opportunity of virtual worlds, regardless of which VW you're looking at.

Someone who is doing research in that specific sector can provide better insight as to whether that level of widespread attention can return, but I am not in research nor have I read any studies.

So to recap, I didn't jump to any conclusions -- I just said that instead of being super easy to end up in the press and gain mainstream mindshare, it's now a lot more challenging than it used to be.

There are some very bright folks I've met at SCEA PR, I'm sure they've figured out how to approach this to overcome those challenges and I'm curious to see what they've devised.

I am personally worried a bit about the time it is taking to bring an open beta for Home and how long it will take to be able to release a full featured and very stable 1.0 release after that. We will see...

I would, but I love Metal Gear, FF, UT too much. God forbid I question the direction Sony is taking my $600 investment?

While the beta has improved quite a bit over the last few months, Home is still an empty shell of a destination. I loaded it up a couple weeks ago just to see what was new and if any other beta testers were on, I ran through all the rooms...one other guy in the main hub park was idling (dancing), and one other person was running around looking at stuff like I was. Nothing else going on, and it was 10 o'clock at night, I would've thought I'd see more than 3 other people running around. Since they moved all the movie theater rooms to the ground floor the second floor has literally nothing on it...it's just bad.

I hate seeing Loading status bars on video screens in the background. I hate going into the theater and not being able to watch the videos full-screen. The arcade area is mostly unexciting. I'm interested in seeing if it comes together in the future, but... I'm not optimistic over the beta.

Would have worked during launch period, but not anymore.

Not trying to be a smart ass or anything, but do you really believe that that sort of thing will happen? Maybe I'm just becoming jaded... but sony has seemed to overpromise lately. I mean I remember seeing Phil Harrison demonstrating receiving video chat messages from the xmb while playing a game.

I just don't think this sort of thing will really happen, especially when it's just left up to the developers initiative.
This is the reason why i really don't have much faith in home.

okay. Let's be honest here--people have never needed achievments as an excuse to be virtual dicks, poor sportsmen, or the like.

yes but Stats and Acheivements add to the asshole factor significantly.

Maybe it's just me, but I had no problems playing TF2 on PC with achievements and detailed stat-tracking.
Hell, most servers I played CS on had mods to include detailed stat-tracking and they were usually the best ones.

Except they've said they're working every single thing you wanted. Your objections are misplaced.

Now, I've heard this for two years now. Where exactly is all this Assholery coming to light on a widescale basis? I mean, I even read that interivew with that King guy who was the first to hit a million or whatever? And he wasn't being a cock about it. He was just like "Well, I played a lot of so and so and a lot of such and such," etc. Even with sites devoted to the shit, you don't see people flooding the internet with their Gamerscore nestled in the cockles of their every sentence.

Who's going around bullying people about their Gamerscore? I've seen people mention it but the only time I've seen a GamerCard used to call someone out is when someone's claiming to have played something there's no evidence of.

Your first beta?

Especially in the cases of closed betas, they're never there for judgement about the final product

Please Sony, don't call them achievements. When VALVE added achievements to Half Life 2 for PC i started to get confused. I'm easily confused see.
