Playstation Move Thread: It Only Does Everything

I can't believe how much I am enjoying table tennis. This game has reinvigorated my love for gaming. I feel like a little kid. Although I was skeptical in the beginning regarding Move, but after playing this game and understanding the complexities of the hardware, I am left amazed on all levels possible. Move is really incredible, and what’s more, completely hardcore (when games are made that way).

But to finish this post on a more down to earth note, did anyone actually manage to beat the computer on hardest in table tennis in free mode? Never before did I enjoy so much being beaten by an AI, and knowing that by loosing I am actually learning. :)

The Beat Sketch demo isn't working for me. :(

When I load it up at the calibration screen it asks me to press O to continue. I press it and nothing happens.

The pointer drifting could be a rounding error when calculating the smoothing of the pointer.

Is it more likely that it is a hardware or software issue?

Edit: LOL i just finished watching the video to see this question. :P

That's my thinking as well. But then again I wonder *why* augmented reality works fine. Perhaps some pointing games use "less sphere" for tracking and rely mostly on the gyros/magnetometer? Why are MAG or RE5 free from this issue?

I'm fairly certain that the pointing doesn't use the sphere at all in most game, I can't imagine the camera can tell which way the sphere is pointing since it'll always appear "round" to the camera.

MAG and RE5 are probably 'free' from the issue because they are bigger studios and have probably invested more into testing the technology and perfecting it, at least as much as they can.

Probably a combination of both. The software is still a little fresh, so it has a while to mature, and the hardware solution will always have some faults here and there, but over time it should get considerably more stable and improved.

Ehhh, dunno about that. Its an interesting issue though.

Just got done playing some demos briefly. Fun stuff. Tried start the party and it instantly generated smiles. Tumble is as precise as I wanted it to be, and interestingly had an older visitor playing for a full four levels before we could take it out of his hands. The Shoot seems fun, although it highlighted to me the importance of proper calibration. The first time I calibrated it just felt wrong, so I went back and recalibrated...and it was much better. I was 'over pointing' at the corner targets the first time, which is probably pretty easy to do.

Very briefly played with table tennis in SC...I actually had to be quite close to the TV for this, but it worked fine for me. As in I was maybe 4 or 5 feet away. I had to readjust the camera angle compared to the 'sitting' games and to compensate for the closer distance, but I was able to fit in the guidebox fine at that distance.

edit - if i had to pick two words to sum it up across all the games, i'd say 'no cheats'. It's like a proper motion capture, you have to really do what you intend to happen on screen. Which can be rather involving, but I think it's how it should be.

Seems like the camera below the TV does cause some problems. Archery for example did not feel natural as I was aiming higher than my TV to hit targets. Also Tumble seemed off as I had to aim higher than what it felt like I should. Any way to adjust this?
Archery I think is just buggy/finnicky period. When you pull back, pull it back at chest height instead of by your ear.

Having a blast with your 6 year old? Priceless.

There are some things money can't buy, for everything else...

yup my 5 yr old keeps on playing Start the Party lol she loves seeing herself on the big TV :lol

If I remember correctly, Marks once said that they could pick up extremely small movements that caused the pointer to jitter. Developers have to program to ignore extremely small movements like shaking hands when processing the in-data.

Stampy said:

More likely to be a software one since other games don't have drifting.
What would concern me if this is the case is why some games don't do this pointing thing properly. Especially stuff like Time Crisis. Does "proper pointing" add lag perhaps? I'm honestly confused about this discrepancy.

In about 50 hours of Wii Sports Resort and Tiger Woods 2011, I've never once had this issue. I think something may be wrong with your Motion+.

You don't notice it as much until AFTER you have seen Move. It's one of those "hard to go back" type of deals. Another example would be that waggle/wrist flick bullshit.

Amazon (<3) just dropped off my SC bundle, as well as an extra Move. So far I have only played Tumble, installing Time Crisis atm, I am digging this tech that is for sure. Can't wait to play more games.
wait...what? time crisis is out?! i thought it wasn't out until october?

You sure? Because the other studios that are making these games like The Shoot, Sports Champtions, and Flight Control HD, they aren't exactly "big" studios, so they obviously have limited budgets. Not to mention none of these studios are first party, they're all outsourced IIRC.

Capcom obviously has experience with pointer controls, and I'd assume the knowledge they could carry over from the Wii would be applicable here to some extent. Heck, they've been implementing and working on Move Control since last year's E3, right? When they announced it would have that support?

As for MAG, it clearly has it's issues, as the cursor jumps around considerably (which may just be it simulating recoil). Even then, Zipper is a first party studio, and they've had a good amount of time (and resources) thrown their way to get it working with Socom 4, so obviously that all applies to MAG as well.

I think it's an extremely valid assumption.

I have to admit that your scientific approach to Move's quirks is really fascinating. Your videos are a joy to watch.

You just reminded me I have to check MAG Beta 1.04. Seems like they have detached the ironsights from the middle of the screen! Nice!

PlayStation Move vs Pointing

Has anyone experienced this?

Disclaimer: I tested 3 different Moves before making this video. And yes, I did the via XMB calibration thing multiple times.

good work TTP and I hope Sony looks into this and gets back to you with some answer and fixes this issue if it really is an issue. As you said it never happened when you played Start the party...which is more confusing. What about Gladiator where you are swinging violently does that mess up the calibration? If calibration doesn't get messed up during gameplay, then it would be ok I guess? keep us updated :)

Bullshit, Wii Resort asks you to recalibrate all the time. I refuse to believe you didn't notice this somehow.

I saw this at Best Buy today. I didn't know it was out!

Also, it's only $99.99, which isn't that bad.

But do you have to buy the Navigation-mote separately? Looking at Gamestop's listing, it looks like the bundles only have the Move controller.

I'll probably pick this up when Killzone 3 and Crysis 2 comes out. If the Move support for those games are great, I'll definitely consider getting it!

Team work :D

That's awesome though, I'll have to check out MAG, I haven't updated the beta yet. Will do immediately!

Maybe the unaffected games are using the magnetometer, while the other games just use the gyroscope.

I think they all use the magnetometer and gryos, just some games have better software that can interpret the information better.

Wonder if i take apart the wand and rig it up to where i have a giant ball over my head and wired all the buttons to my shirt and had my friends holding me and moving me around if that would work

Wii Resort asks me to recalibrate at the beginning of the first game I play. After that, the only time it asks is if you switch back and forth between games that use the nunchuck and don't use the nunchuck.

I've never once had your problem. Of course, I won't say it's BS like you instantly seem to do because there may be something wrong with your Motion+.

I guess I just don't buy this as a major difference. I look forward to purchasing Move when some games I'm interested in come out for it. But I have no major problem with setting my controller down for 2 seconds so it can recalibrate. At the end of an hourlong play session it may have added an extra 15-30 seconds onto my play time. No big deal.

You don't even need it.

Ye gods, can we sticky something like "NO YOU DO NOT NEED TO BUY THE NAVIGATION CONTROLLER WHEN YOU BUY MOVE" to the top of the forum?

My 11m old loved seeing himself while I was testing Eyepet. It was unintentional but often time the Eyepet would concentrate on him and snuggle next to him. The announcer guy kept telling me to stay still but never could get it to let me "stroke it" ( :lol )
due to all the movement.

The Shoot, I couldn't play it since even after calibrating the pointer would only stay on the borders of the screen. What am I doing wrong. Every game I've tested works great but that one.

I wish I had bought a nav controller when I bought the bundle, some of the Sports Champions games seem like they would be a lot better with it. RE5G also would benefit greatly from using one, . If you want the full Move experience, buy the Nav controller.

i thought so too but i got used to it pretty quick, now i have no problems navigating

Yeah. My M+ drifted quite a lot, although I've only ever played it with one game which is Sports Resort. I haven't gotten Move to drift no matter how hard I jerk it around.

I got the Starter Bundle, another Move, and a navigation controller for $110 thanks to some Amex points and a RewardZone certificate. Feel pretty good about that!

I played Table Tennis quite a bit earlier and I was surprised at just how accurate the hardware is.

Navigation controller is nice, even though I have no games that support it yet.

Start the Party is ace fun, we had a right laugh playing that tonight. Flight Control is slick too, will be nice to relax to.
The Shoot demo seems great, can't wait to play (needs the gun attachment to get the most of it IMO)
Tumble is genuinely brilliant

the beat sketchers demo doesn't work for some reason

that's weird. I guess you need to be controller 7.
It worked fine for me. I just say there and sketched on the screen. Didn't really do much else.

Where is the Time Crisis demo?!?

it's only on the bundle blu-ray demo disk

don't worry. It is about 2 minutes long.

good news is that you can use your guncon 3 with it! all four other people that own one.

Gladiator is the funniest shit brosephs. I wish that had online so I can mess bitches up IRL.

Also, anyone else's wrist hurting after a while of playing, guess I gotta get used to it :D

Do we know if "the fight" will have online mp? After playing gladiator, the fight might end up being my goty if it has online mp.

So I've played Time Crisis and The Shoot so far, and the pointer calibration drifts right significantly the very first time I aim left. I can't see how this would have made it past QA. I guess my hardware is broke or something? I've done the XMB Calibration like 10 times and tried a variety of distances and angles on the camera with no improvement.
