PlayStation Network getting two-factor authentication, Sony confirms

Pardon my ignorance, but why is being able to change PSN names such a desired thing?
Because a lot of people chose a name when they were 12 and feel it doesn't really resonate with them anymore. Getting a new account isn't an attractive alternative since it would entail losing your trophies (trivial), friends list (annoying but manageable) and digital purchases (hell to the no).

Finally, now I can worry less about my account somehow getting hacked. I had my account since 08, and I went digital this gen, so I'm really protective of it. I don't share my PSN password with anyone, but I love to have that extra layer of security for the future.

Ok, now I understand. It's really surprising that they still haven't added such an easy thing to do.

Their architecture for PSN is more than likely making what should be relatively simple a taxing issue. I think they are (have been) working on it but it just takes time. A lot of time, unfortunately.

The theory is that it's not an easy thing to do at all due to the way PSN's databases are constructed.

If they indeed used the PSN ID as the primary key in their database (which would be god damn ridiculous), changing it would be a nightmare.

I thought it was doable in Japan?

Thanks Spiderman!
Spectacular Spectacular spider-Man!
Spectacular Spcetacular,
Spider-Man!

Disappointed I wasn't thanked personally.
Wow, finally. Guess Sony was getting tired of all the Spidermen getting their accounts hacked.
We should all change our avatars to Spiderman in honor of this news.
What is the link between Spider-Man and two steps authentication?

Is it only because of the old Spider-Man font on the PS3?

It doesn't matter, the solution is to start from scratch and come up with some sort of migration process. They can't keep building on the pile of crap forever. They need to quit stalling and make a new pile of crap!
"We will be shutting down PSN servers in order to get something completely fresh started. Please be patient as we update to a system that will provide a much better experience."

"RAGERAGERAGE!!!"

:P

I do agree with your sentiment though. It seems they are managing to workaround something awful but they need to get to the core of the problem.

what's funny is that there was another push for 2FA after the Heartbleed/SSL vulnerability in 2014. lots of these sites and services still never did anything. for example, reddit was supposedly looking into implementing it but it never happened.

lot of institutions still don't have an implementation in place. surprisingly some financial institutions still don't. my school is currently in the process of implementing it on its single sign on and vpn services. being part of that makes me slightly more understanind as it is actually a lot harder to implement than most people probably think :) that being said 8 years is a long ass time...so yeah

This is great, but this wouldn't have prevented the infamous hack, correct? This is just account protection, not database protection. Am I assuming incorrectly?
